4 GEOGRAPHY Time Zone : (UTC+8) Coordinate : N E Area : km 2 Borders : North : North Minahasa Regency West : Manado Strait South : Minahasa Regency East : Minahasa Regency Air Temperature : 24 C 32 C Relative Humidity : 90% DEMOGRAPHICS Population : Density : /km 2 ECONOMY Most residents of Manado City works as civil servant (PNS), teacher or private employees (41.44%), entrepreneur (20.57%), traders (12.85%), farmers/ ranchers/ fishermen (9.17%), and labour (8.96%), while the remaining are engaged in the service sector and others (7%). Manado City s economy in particularly consists of trade, hotels and restaurants, transport and communications as well as the service sector. INFRASTRUCTURE Transportation Manado City supported by land, air and sea transportation. The air transportation is supported by the Sam Ratulangi International Airport that connects Manado with other large cities of Indonesia such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Makassar and Balikpapan The airport also connects Manado City directly with several countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and Philippine. Telecommunication Manado City is supported by adequate telecommunication facilities, both mobile phone and phone network are available. Energy The main source of energy in Manado City comes from the National Electric Company, Diesel Generator and Solar Panel. P a g e 3 10
5 TOURISM FACTS ATTRACTION As the largest city in the region, Manado is an important tourist spot for both domestic and foreign tourists. Ecotourism is the biggest attraction of Manado City. Scuba Diving and snorkeling in Bunaken Island is its most popular tourist attraction. Another tourist destination are Tondano Lake, Lokon Mount, Klabat Mount and Mahawu. In the past two decades, tourism industry has grew rapidly as one of the city's main economy contributors. The main attraction of Manado City, even for the North Sulawesi Province is the Bunaken National Park, a marine park that some people refer to as one of the most beautiful marine park in the world. Bunaken Marine Park is one of many nature conservation areas or national parks in Indonesia. Bunaken Marine Park was famous for its spacious and beautiful formation of coral reefs. Bunaken Island is one of five islands that are scattered a few kilometres from the coast of the city of Manado. The island located only about 8 Km from the mainland of Manado City and can be reached in about half to two hours by boat. ACCESSIBILITIES Manado City is relatively easy to reach by both domestic and international tourist. The main entry is from Sam Ratulangi International Airport located in the city itself. P a g e 4 10
6 REGIONAL TOURISM POLICY TOURISM IN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Manado City is one of the national priorities in terms of tourism development. The Ministry of Tourism assigned Manado City one of the National Tourism Development Zones, National Tourism Destination and National Strategic Tourism Areas. In line with the national program, local government of Manado City set tourism sector as one of the main regional development priorities. The government and the community have fully aware of their abundant resources and their potential for economic contribution through tourism development. They are welcoming every investors that are willing to cooperate not only on developing more tourism attractions and facilities but also developing all tourism supporting aspects of Manado City. REGIONAL TOURISM DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK Tourism development in Manado City must be implemented in compliance with the following principles: 1. Community based tourism Maintain the involvement of the local community and stakeholders in every tourism development activities 2. Sustainable tourism Continuous improvement and preservation of the environmental, cultural and communal aspects of tourism development 3. Cultural preservation Implement and integrate local culture elements in all tourism development activities 4.
