In 2013, the economic growth rate of Selayar Island Regency was 9.47 percent. In 2013 the GDRP per capita at current market price was IDR 15,848,188. INFRASTRUCTURE Transportation Selayar Islands Regency supported by adequate district roads that connect through all parts of the main island. Selayar Island has one pioneer airport which is H. Aroeppala Airport, serving flights to or from Makassar, Bone, Kendari, Labuan Bajo and Ruteng. The regency also supported by ten local seaports connecting several islands in the regency. 5 Telecommunication Selayar Island Regency is supported by adequate telecommunication facilities; both mobile phone and phone network are available, with a decent internet connection in the area. Energy Electrical service for residents in the regency is prevalent, altough some remote islands in the regency do not have electricity yet or powered by local diesel generators, which caused by the geographical form of the region. 6 TOURISM FACTS ATTRACTION Selayar Island Regency has a number of attractive tourism destinations. Ranging from natural, nature based and historical tourist attraction. 1. Nature Based Tourist Attraction The dominance of sea area and atolls as well as the atoll of the third largest reef in the world (Takabonerate Marine National Park) make Selayar Archipelago Regency as one of the major maritime destinations in Indonesia. The clusters for nature marine destination are divided into three main part, namely: West Coast Region; East Coast Region; and Takabonerate Marine National Park. a. West Coast Region West Coast Region is a densely populated area or region inhabited by almost the entire population of Selayar Island Regency. There are several diving spot that have been manage since ) Liang Kareta Beach Liang Kareta Beach has fine white sand and crystal clear sea water. 2) Jeneiya Beach Jeneiya Beach has a very long coast line of white sand, up to around meters. 3) Baloya Beach Baloya beach is one of the favorite site for Selayar residents to spend their time with their families. b. East Coast Region The east coast part of Selayar Island is the best area for tourism activity. There are several white sand beaches that are regurally visited by tourists. 1) Ngapaloka Beach Ngapaloka Beach is a white sand mixed with black sand, and decorated by palm trees along its coast. 2) Bonetappalang Beach Bonetappalang coastal area as one of the best dive tourism destinations in Indonesia. 7 c. Takabonerate Marine National Park Takabonerate is an atoll reefs located on the southern side of Sulawesi Island or in the Flores Sea. Takabonerate is the largest atoll reefs in Southeast Asia and the third largest in the world with a very high level of biodiversity and habitat for marine life that are rare and protected. 2. Historical Based Tourist Attraction In addition to marine tourism, there are several tourism attraction, including the historical and cultural treasures into the community generation. a. Pakarena Ballabulo Dance: b. Rambang-rambang Performing Art c. Gong Neraka d. Bitobang Village ACCESSIBILITIES Selayar Islands Regency are relatively easy to reach by both domestic and international tourists. The main entry is from Sultan Hassanudin International Airport located in Makassar City. From this airport, tourists could access the regency by air via H. Aroeppala Airport which takes 40 minutes or by sea via ferry from Makasar (via Bulukumba seaport) around 7-9 hours. P a g e 6 36

8 REGIONAL TOURISM POLICY TOURISM IN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT Tourism has become one of the main priority sectors for development by the local government. The government and the community have fully aware of the Selayar Island Regency tourism resources and it s potential for economic contribution through tourism development. They are welcoming investors that are willing to cooperate not only on developing more tourism attraction and facilities but also developing all tourism aspects of Selayar Island Regency. REGIONAL TOURISM DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK Tourism development in Selayar Island Regency must be implemented in compliance with the following principles: 1. Community based tourism Maintain the involvement of the local community and stakeholders on every tourism development activity. 2. Sustainable tourism Maintain balance to the economy, nature, and socio-culture impact of tourism development. 3. Cultural preservation Implement and integrate local culture elements in all of the tourism development activities 4.
