1 commemorative events About the Opportunity During April 2012 the media of the world will be following the centennial of Titanic s voyage. In the late evening of April 14, 1912 Titanic hit an iceberg and sank on the morning of April 15. The world still remembers this epic tragedy. The events of April 14/15 happened off Cape Race, Newfoundland with the Cape being the world focus for the tragedy as the then-famous Marconi Station kept an enthralled world up to date on the tragedy. During April 14/ we have invited international media together with Titanic enthusiasts from around the world to the Cape Race area to commemorate the centennial of the tragedy while recreating the historic events that took place at Cape Race. The world will be watching Cape Race in the coming months as we launch our historic events and commemorate this significant anniversary. Receiving Titanic is pleased to announce that Director James Cameron has recognized the efforts of Cape Race-Portugal Cove South Heritage Inc. and has come onboard as our ambassador. In an effort to maintain the Cape Race legacy a selection of sponsorship opportunities have been made available.

CAPE RACE-PORTUGAL COVE SOUTH HERITAGE INC. is a not-for-profit organization established in 1998, made up of a volunteer board of directors with the mandate to preserve, protect, develop and promote the natural, cultural, and historic resources of the area from Portugal Cove South to Cape Race. This area, known as the Edge of Avalon Heritage Coast (www. edgeofavalon.ca), includes two significant sites - Cape Race National Historic Lighthouse and Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve (managed by Parks and Natural Areas, Division of Environment and Conservation). CR-PCSHI is responsible for all operations and maintenance of the Edge of Avalon Interpretative Centre in Portugal Cove South and the Myrick Wireless Interpretative Centre, a reconstructed Marconi Station, at Cape Race, and in order to continue to operate and maintain these buildings, we rely upon fundraisers and sponsorships. In August of 2010, CR-PCSHI and members of the local communities formed the Titanic Commemorations Subcommittee to plan and organize events to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic s maiden voyage and the unfortunate fate that befell her. Cape Race has touched the life of almost every person and every family who has made the transatlantic journey from Europe to North America. Cape Race was the first land sighted in the new world meaning the perils of the open Atlantic were now behind. A bustling navigational and communications centre in Titanic s time, the Cape is now a remote headland with the same lighthouse as in The Cape Race families have moved to less remote coastal areas near the Cape and created a volunteer-driven non-profit group dedicated to preserving the centuriesold history and stories of Cape Race (Cape Race-Portugal Cove South Heritage, Inc.). Faced with a failing fishery and the changes in communications technology that resulted in the closure of the Cape Race Marconi Station in 1967, the communities have come together to commemorate their long maritime history while remembering the pivotal role their families played in telling the world about the Titanic s tragedy.

3 Cape Race and Newfoundland touches the Titanic tragedy on many levels. In 1901 the Marconi technology that would enable over 700 Titanic lives to be saved was pioneered on Signal Hill overlooking St. John s. The Cape Race Marconi Station s Officer-in-Charge was friends and school chums with Titanic s Chief Wireless operator, Jack Phillips. It was Cape Race that received Titanic s distress signal and provided updates on the tragedy to an enthralled world. As the nearest point of land to the tragedy, it is Cape Race that is attracting the attention of people wanting to connect with the catastrophe as the historic centennial of the collision with the Newfoundland iceberg looms. To help the citizens of the Cape Race area honour their history and commemorate the Titanic s legacy, Cape Race-Portugal Cove South Heritage Inc. has launched the Receiving Titanic Commemorations. As media, travelers, and Titanic enthusiasts are drawn to Cape Race for its pending Titanic Centennial, Cape Race-Portugal Cove South Heritage Inc. is offering sponsorship opportunities allowing companies to take advantage of the growing international attention in our 2012 commemorations. We have James Cameron as our Cape Race ambassador and a series of events designed to recognize these powerful connections while honouring the people and families of Titanic and Cape Race. The people of Cape Race-Portugal Cove South invite you to join us in Newfoundland in 2012 when the eyes of the world once again turn to Titanic and her Cape Race connections. This is where we received Titanic s distress call and where in April, 2012 ships at sea will recreate the events of 1912 between travelers on the North Atlantic and Wireless operators at Cape Race. 4 cape race-portugal cove south heritage inc Program of Events for 2012 Titanic Commemorations at Cape Race April 14th 15th, 2012 Commemorative Dinner and Reception: Participants will enjoy a dinner of local flavoured food typical of a meal that might have been eaten at Cape Race in Following dinner there will be an evening of presentations, musical entertainment and a recreation of the Titanic events from Live re-enactment from Cape Race of wireless messages to ships at sea will be televised via a large screen that will go late into the night as we follow Titanic s last minutes. Ecumenical Service: Titanic is a grave site, and this fact will not be forgotten as we will take the time to pay our respects to those who lost their lives. We will remember one of the world s largest and most famous marine disasters with an ecumenical service at Holy Redeemer Church in Trepassey. Live Broadcast. Worldwide Radio Commemoration: Every year, Ham Radio operators around the world communicate to remember the Titanic disaster, and this year they will also participate as a part of our Titanic Commemoration Events. Live Broadcast. Ship-to-Shore Recreation: CQD. Working with cruise ships/vessels over the Titanic site we will be recreating the wireless messages between Titanic and Cape Race, as messages will be broadcasted and received using various forms of technology. Media around the world have been notified. Ice reports are circulating and operators who worked at the Cape are invited to return for the event. A large screen in nearby Trepassey will televise the dots, dashes, and translation of the various messages that Cape Race dispatched to the world in Live Broadcast. Entertainment Showcase: Local entertainers are engaged to deliver a program of local music. Special performance by Ron Hynes, local singer-songwriter, commissioned to compose and perform a song on the Titanic Connection to Cape Race.

5 Cape Race Irish Heritage Community Brunch: Participants will be served brunch at Portugal Cove South. Local flavoured food will be served and local musicians will be on hand to perform. Permanent Interpretation and Exhibit: A permanent Titanic exhibit and interpretative panels will be unveiled at the expanded Myrick Wireless Interpretation Centre at Cape Race. Here visitors are immersed in the story of Cape Race including the role that wireless technology and Cape Race played in the world famous Titanic disaster. The exhibits also showcases Cape Race s role in the rescue efforts in the hours following the Titanic s collision with the iceberg. Titanic Commemorative Plaque Unveiling: An invitation has been extended to the Prime Minister of Canada to unveil a commemorative plaque remembering the ties between Cape Race and Titanic on the 100th anniversary of her tragic demise. Local and international media will be invited to come to this event as we pay our respects to all those men, women and children who lost their lives on April 15th, Sunday April 15th Commemorative Wreath Laying Ceremony: Commemorative Wreaths will be sent to Halifax, Nova Scotia to remember the victims buried in the graveyards there. Sunday April 15th Book Reading and Signing: There will be a book reading and signing by a local author at the Edge of Avalon Interpretative Centre in Portugal Cove South. During this event, participants will be given complementary beverages and hors d oeuvres. Sunday April 15th Commemorative Plaque Presentation: In appreciation for their great work in preserving the Titanic heritage of Cape Race, CAPE RACE-PORTUGAL COVE SOUTH HERITAGE INC. will present a commemorative plaque to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic to be unveiled on the weekend on the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic tragedy. Media Accommodations: Arrangements with international media are in place to cover the Cape Race service and recreation of ship-to-shore events. Images of Cape Race, icebergs, and our Titanic connection will be circulated around the world. 6 cape race-portugal cove south heritage inc Events leading up to April 14th-15th, 2012 Sunday, April 1st, 2012 Irish Heritage Community Brunch: Experience a traditional Irish brunch in St. John s and Mount Pearl as we raise awareness of our Titanic events planned for the following weekend. Our brunch venues will feature local flavours and local artists as well as amazing Titanic displays and promotional give aways. Friday, April 6th -Receiving Titanic/CAPE RACE-PORTUGAL COVE SOUTH HERITAGE INC. presents Titanic 3D World Premiere at Empire Theatres: A Titanic inspired Wine Tasting and Auction: Join us at Empire Theatres Studio 12, for the world wide release of James Cameron s Titanic 3D. This red carpet event will feature local media and dignitaries in St. John s, movie artifacts on display, and a Titanic themed wine tasting and silent auction. Tickets will be limited and will include displays of Cape Race commemorative gifts, stills of Cape Race or video will be shown, we are currently pursuing a celebrity host. The VIP appeal of this event will be phenomenal and as with any movie premiere, be it in Hollywood, New York, London or St. John s, Newfoundland, we will have sky chasers placed outside the main entrance and local and international media will be invited to cover the proceedings. Monday April 9th to April 12th Day Tours to Cape Race: In the days leading up to the Main Event, day trips will be held, leaving from the Delta and making the journey from Signal Hill to Portugal Cove South and Cape Race to help promote the Main Event and Newfoundland s Titanic Trail to visitors. Director James Cameron with Larry Daley (Photo credit Larry Daley) Tuesday April 10th Titanic Sailing Centennial Media Reception and Titanic Teleconference: Today, in 1912, the Titanic s maiden voyage began. Receiving Titanic/ CAPE RACE-PORTUGAL COVE SOUTH HERITAGE INC. will invite local and international media to review the upcoming Commemorative events and talk about Cape Race taking its place as a recognized Titanic destination. We are working to facilitate a mayoral series of greetings with the Mayors of Southampton, Queenstown, Ireland; Cherbourgh, France; the Mayor of Halifax, and Portugal Cove South. This may be facilitated by Dr. Robert Ballard, Discoverer of Titanic, who will be calling in to bring greetings and share in the centennial.

7 Receiving Titanic s Gertie Molloy will present a commemorative plaque to the International Ice Patrol who will be an invited guest. Similar plaques will be sent to the mayors of the other cities in advance of the teleconference. Media releases will be sent to each of the cities well in advance of the teleconference so as to maximize the coverage for Cape Race as a Titanic travel destination. Media Event. Wednesday April 11th to April 12th Titanic s Irish Remembered Through Song - George Street Event: Inspired by the Irish Immigrants and musicians that mostly perished on Titanic, we will commemorate this little known part of our Irish Heritage in music and song. The Celtic Hearth has already approached us about sponsoring a Song Writers Circle and we are currently looking at other bars that may be used for similar events, like a Local Talent Night or an Open Mic Night. Receiving Titanic will provide signage, banners, and possibly even provide the music scores from the Titanic movie for the performers. The George Street Association has been approached about participating as well. Wednesday April 11th to 16th Receiving Titanic Travel Symposium*: Delta, St. John s. Multi day Titanic immersion study tour, featuring Titanic highlights of Cape Race and St. John s. In cooperation with Receiving Titanic Partner Wildland Tours. Other Events and Activities for 2012 Titanic Film and Literary Festival: During the summer of 2012, a weeklong Titanic themed Film and Literary Festival has been planned for St. John s. Each day we will feature an author who will read from and sign copies of their work, and screen films and documentaries about the Titanic. We will also host guest speakers, who will talk about the films, the Titanic, and other related topics, such as the role her demise played in the development of various marine safety initiatives. School Presentations: A Titanic themed school presentation is currently in development and schools throughout the Avalon region will be contacted to book dates. Each day we will feature an author who will read from and sign copies of their work, and screen films and documentaries about the Titanic. We will also host guest speakers who will talk about the films, the Titanic and other related topics, such as the role her demise played in the development of various marine safety initatives. Giftware: Cape Race/Titanic themed giftware will be produced and placed for sale at various events and locations throughout the year. All proceeds to Cape Race-Portugal Cove South Heritage Inc.
