1 Vol 30 Issue - 5 September 2013 Honourable Governor of Tamil Nadu to Inaugurate CHEMTECH South 2013 Dr K Rosaiah, Honourable Governor of the State of Tamil Nadu will attend the CHEMTECH South 2013 as the Chief Guest for the event and inaugurate the international series of exhibitions & conferences on 10 th October 2013 at Chennai Trade, Centre, Chennai. The industry in the South has highly appreciated CHEMTECH s initiative of taking the flagship event in Chennai as the Dr K Rosaiah Southern expanse of the country is gearing up to become Honourable Governor of the State of Tamil Nadu one of the key regions for the development of manufacturing sector. CHEMTECH has organised similar events in 1995 & 1997 in Chennai which were very well received by the industrial fraternity. Industry Welcomes CHEMTECH to South Again Post the announcement of PCPIR in Cuddalore and current project expansions undertaken by some of the key refiners, lot of optimism is prevailing for industrial development in the Southern part of the country, which has inspired us to bring our flagship event to Chennai, stated Mr Maulik Jasubhai, Group CEO, Jasubhai Group & CHEMTECH Foundation while interacting with over 40 key decision makers from the sectors of process equipment, manufacturing, engineering and allied sectors during two hour networking meet at the Madras Cricket Club, Chennai. Mr Arun Dev, General Manager, L&T Valves and Chairman, PVF South Expo 2013, appreciated CHEMTECH s initiative to organise the international exhibitions and conferences in Chennai and said, PVF South Expo 2013 would provide a unique opportunity to the pumps valves & fittings manufacturers to showcase their offerings on a wider scale across various user industries. Mr D G Guru, Director & COO, Koerting Engineering Pvt Ltd, expressed that CHEMTECH South 2013 is being organised at the right time since the market in South is expected to grow much faster in the near future and he expects a positive outcome of the event for the process industry as well as the equipment manufacturers. Mr Hemant Shetty, CEO CHEMTECH Foundation said that with over 200 exhibitors already registered for the show and support from the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers, Government of India, CHEMTECH envisages emulating the success of CHEMTECH World Expo series in Chennai. 1

I believe, it will need a collaborative approach from all EPC players to assemble and discuss the course of action on how to contribute in making Indian EPC industry of high standards. With number of projects lined up in the South, this, I believe, is the best time to begin the discussions between the EPC players and the project owners and EPC South would be the right platform to deliberate upon how they can mutually complement each other to drive the growth of the industry. The chemical industry continues to exhibit steady growth in South India and this timely initiative is commendable. Mr Panicker pointed out integrating the new processes with the old processes and safety as two of the most critical challenges for the refiners in expansion projects. Mr Mehra suggested having discussions around flow measurement for custody transfer since internationally; refiners are now using mass flowmeters to gauge the losses to bring significant reduction in losses during custody transfer. The presence of technical team from BPCL added immense value to chalk the conference programmes as they talked about some of the latest techniques they are implementing in the expansion project and proposed Contd on page 04 2 September 2013

4 Contd from page 02 the topics such as Measurement & control accuracy, Remote accessibility, Big data analytics, Maintenance and Process safety as some of the key focus areas for the manufacturers while undertaking Brownfield or Greenfield expansions. The team emphasised upon having a separate session on Flow Measurement for Custody Transfer to gauge the losses during transfer of crude. Mr Mehra appreciated and supported the idea as this could generate significant interest amongst the refiners since this can help them gauge the loss of quantities during custody transfer and save them the cost of lost quantities. Integration of IT with automation has proved to be a boon in faster data processing and process control but on the flipside, has made the oil & gas industry more prone to cyber threats. Recently, some of the major international oil & gas companies have faced the cyber attacks which have interrupted the regular operations. The board decided having panel discussion on cyber security inviting users and technology providers perspective. The panel has finalised organising one-day conference on the theme Automation for Process Reliability on 11 th October 2013 during CHEMTECH South. Speakers will deliberate on topical aspects in the on Process Safety and Flow Measurement for Custody Transfer followed by the panel discussion Cybersecurity for Plant Automation. Inaugurating the conference, Mr Tarun Kapur (IAS), Joint Secretary, Ministry of Renewable Energy inaugurated the conference Mr Tarun Kapur (IAS), Joint Secretary, Ministry of Renewable Energy stated that roof top solar activity has shown maximum growth in the solar due to increasing awareness towards climate change. He said that the Central Government had announced subsidies under the last plan, which are currently under review and will be announced shortly. The states of Karnataka, Rajasthan, Gujarat & Maharashtra have seen a strong growth in this sector as a result of announcement of additional subsidies of around 20 per cent which has received strong positive consumer response. Mr Yatinder Pal Singh Suri, Country Head, Outokumpu India Pvt Ltd expressed his concern on the large carbon footprint of India s power sector due to high reliance on fossil fuels and stressed upon the urgency to increase the share of renewable energy in India s energy basket. Statistics have revealed that demand of solar heaters has increased significantly in the Indian market, during the last two years. Roof top solar is diverse and very niche market, said Mr A P Shamuganandan, Executive Vice President Projects & CTO, Tata Power Solar. The returns are very high and this field will offer ample opportunities for the financial investors, he said answering to the question on the initial high CAPEX. Panellists identified solar cookers 5

6 as a niche area for application of solar energy which has ample scope in the Indian market. Availability of products off-the-shelf for the consumers can give much required impetus to their use amongst the users, the panel noted. Industrial applications of solar energy is still in very nascent stages in India, which has a great future, the experts shared. Mr Anmol Singh Jaggi, Director, Gensol shared that replacing diesel or gas based power plants with solar based power plants will offer ample opportunities to the solar technologies and enable India to curb current account deficit to a significant extent. Mr Herzog Timon, Solar Expert from GIZ and Ms Nicole Thomas, Counsellor from Australian High Commission shared the success of solar applications in Germany & Australia and discussed the initiatives taken by the respective countries in this field. Solar specialists discussed various business models that solar energy players were following globally and of their success could be emulated in India. Experts to Deliberate on Staying Competitive in Refining over the next decade Dr R K Malhotra chairs the first CAB meeting finalises the programme Conference to address entire gamut of refining industry strong focus on improving bottom lines. Dr R K Malhotra, Director (R&D), IOCL & Chairman Refining Committee, Oil & Gas World Expo 2014, steered the first Central Advisory Board (CAB) meeting in his office on 6 th September. He urged the members to share the ideas which are most relevant in today s context and would help the refiners address these key issues and remain competitive during the next decade. Two biggest challenges that the refiners are facing today is how to be profitable and remain competitive, Dr Malhotra remarked. Members discussed wide array of subjects that could be considered for deliberations before concluding Emerging Trends & Technologies in Refining as the theme for one-day conference, which will be organised on 12th February 2014 during the Oil & Gas World Expo in Mumbai. The programme has been tailored in accordance with the theme and the board members have proposed the names of industry experts from the field of technology who would deliberate over the three sessions Emerging Technologies, Fuel Quality Challenges & Opportunities and Refining Petrochemical Synergy. Oneday conference programme envisages mapping the current trends and challenges across the entire gamut of refining industry right from sourcing to products which the refiners need to focus upon to stay profitable and competent in the current business environment. Mr Jasu Shah remembers (Late) Mr Dalal as one of his closest associates since the early years of CHEMTECH who realised the critical need of exclusive higher education institutes for chemical engineering disciplines for the progress of Indian chemical industry. He also wanted CHEMTECH to set up advisory and monitoring body for the chemical fraternity in India on the similar lines as that of American Chemical Society to address the issues of Indian chemical industry, strengthen the chemical industry and help its products permeate all walks of life, Mr Shah adds. CHEMTECH had the privilege of having Mr Dalal on the advisory board for the flagship event and also on the editorial advisory board of Chemical Engineering World. (Late) Mr Dalal worked meticulously towards the progress of the Indian chemical industry and was instrumental in setting up Indian Chemical Society. Indian chemical industry is forever indebted to him for his pivotal role and immense contribution towards paving the way for the Indian modern chemical industry. 11
