Extracts from the speech: India is one of the fastest growing countries at present and it has surely made rapid strides in various fields. There has been a remarkable growth in a number of industries, especially in chemical processing, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, refinery, shipping, power, infrastructure, etc. However, there is a long way to go as the growth of Indian economy needs major thrust in the manufacturing sector to meet the growing domestic demand, which will give much required push to the growth of the allied sector. During the mid-90 s the Southern region of the country was projected as the 2 nd fastest growing region in India and attracted a lot of international attention. After a brief hiatus, this region is once again gearing up for promising growth with the announcement of a PCPIR in Cuddalore, and expansion plans for existing refineries like CPCL in Chennai, MRPL in Mangalore, HPCL s refinery in Vizag and BPCL s Kochi refinery, which will offer ample opportunities Dr K Rosaiah Honourable Governor of the State of Tamil Nadu to the allied service sectors and open multitude of avenues for the downstream manufacturing segments. And in this context, the series of conferences and exhibitions like ChemTECH South 2013 will categorically play a crucial role, exhibitors, industrialists and entrepreneurs, who participated in the three-day long event, echoed. Despite the festive season over 300 industry professionals marked their presence during the inaugural ceremony of ChemTECH South 2013, where over 50 globally renowned speakers deliberated on topical issues in three different conferences namely EPC South 2013, IAC South 2013 and WaterEX The event attracted 160 Exhibitors from India and overseas who showcased their technologies and services during the three-day meet that witnessed a huge footfall of about 4280 visitors and 200 delegates. Over 60 students from various colleges attended the conferences. After organising two editions of ChemTECH South in the years 1995 & 1997, and multiple symposia in the past, Chemtech organised 3 rd edition of CHEMTECH South Expo from 10 th to 12 th October at Chennai Trade Centre. Dr Rosaiah welcomed Chemtech s comeback move to Chennai and expressed the timing to be just right as South is gearing up for the next wave of growth post the announcement of some of the key projects in the chemical & petrochemicals industry. He lauded the efforts of CHEMTECH taken over the past four decades to provide positive momentum to the Indian manufacturing industry through various innovative ideas & initiatives. 7 Fostering the Growth of Indian Ports Chemtech will organise one-day conference on 12 th February 2014 including a panel discussion on PPP, Connectivity & Future Ports Mr N N Kumar, Deputy Chairman, JNPT chairs the CAB meeting SMP World Expo to Discuss Growth Prospects The members of the Central Advisory Board for the ports conference met under the chairmanship of Mr N N Kumar, Deputy Chairman Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) at his office to finalise the content for one-day conference on ports scheduled for 12 th February Mr Dinesh Lal, Chairman APM Terminals Mumbai & Group Director, Mr A P Moller Maersk, Capt M M Saggi, Director, Narottam Morarjee Institute of Shipping, Mr Sarvesh Shahi, CMD, SKS Logistics, Mr Gautam Dey, Deputy Traffic Manager Business Development, Mumbai Port Trust along with Mr Hemant Shetty, CEO, Jasubhai Media & Chemtech Foundation attended the two-hour long discussion. Riding on high product demand the EXIM trade has seen significant increase in the Asian market which has led to the growth of the ports sector in Asia. Capt Saggi expressed, A country can rely on foreign carriers for shipping, but the growth of indigenous ports sector is critical to foster the growth of EXIM trade for a country. The Asian ports sector has seen a paradigm shift in the growth riding on the increasing product demand in the region. Though countries like China have aggressively developed the indigenous ports sector, the growth of Indian ports sector, particularly for the major ports has continued to be very slow. Mr Lal stated that the development of ports could give a much needed fillip to the economy if the concerns can be addressed. The board members were of the opinion of having interactive sessions through panel discussions which would enhance interest and result in greater engagement of various stakeholders of the ports and the allied sectors. Mr Kumar noted that Indian ports sector has already surpassed the first phase of growth having fairly addressed the connectivity issues and is in the second phase of growth, trying to optimise use of connectivity. However, Indian ports will have to address the quality issues to be at par with the international industry, he added. Going further, Mr Kumar emphasised upon the need of making Indian ports more efficient and addressing the issues together with the Government. He expressed that the private sector is major stakeholder of the non-major ports which is growing better as compared to the major ports and the time has come when they must take the lead and actively engage with the authorities to remove the bottlenecks in the growth of the ports sector. Mr Lal further stressed upon having a session on the opportunities for the ports sector focused on the future needs of the country and how the ports sector needed to gear up now to cater to the growing needs handling different types of cargoes. Unanimously, the board has zeroed down on having macro level discussions on Public Private Partnerships, Logistics & Connectivity and Future Ports in three separate sessions. The members emphasised on inviting the representatives from the Ministry of Shipping, the Planning Commission, Ports, Customs, and stakeholders from the allied sectors along with the industry consultants in each of the panels to have a 360 degree opinion. The Organising Committee for SMP World Expo 2014 under the able guidance of Capt J C Anand, Chairman Emeritus, Indian Register of Shipping, and Global Brand Ambassador for SMP World Expo 2014 has finalised the conference programme in Mumbai on November 19, Dr Vishwapati Trivedi (IAS), Secretary of Shipping shall be invited as the Guest of Honour as the committee agreed that he will be the right person to put the perspective of shipping industry before the Shipping Ministry. Further, Ex-Shipping Secretaries Mr D T Joseph and Mr M P Pinto, who have been associated with Chemtech Foundation for long, are likely to share the dais with Mr Trivedi. Abundant with immense experience, these veterans will ensure the conference remain on the track and encourage fruitful discussions. From overseas, the titan of Japanese shipping industry Mr Noboru Ueda, Chairman and President, ClassNK (Nippon Kaji Kyoki, Japan) has given his consent as the Guest of Honour. ClassNK wishes to explore new business opportunities in India to boost the development of Indian maritime industry. The committee has unanimously decided to have discussions on Maritime Environment and Security, Shipping Finance and Salvage to propel global and national economic sustainability. 7
