7 Conference Summit Day One The opening day of the main summit began with an opening keynote address from His Excellence Salim Bin Nasser Al Aufi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Oil & Gas. His Excellency spoke of the vast potential of Oman s downstream industry, but stressed the importance of ensuring maximum value can be taken from every barrel of oil produced. In order to do this, it is important for thesultanate to realise the value addition opportunities available further downstream. His Excellency was followed by Mr. Musab Al Mahruqi, Chief Executive Officer of co-hosts, Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (Orpic). Mr. Al Mahruqi spoke of Orpic s core goal of unlocking value from Omani molecules and highlighted the major investments being made by Orpic in the refining and petrochemical sector. He highlighted the Sohar Refinery Improvement Project and the Liwa Plastics Industries Complex; Orpic s $3.6bn investment that will enable Oman, for the first time, to produce polyethylene, the form of plastic that rates highest in terms of global demand. Al Mahruqi also spoke of the importance of partnerships in developing the Sultanates downstream sector and highlighted Orpic s close working relationship with Oman Oil Company. The final keynote opening address was given by Andrew Horncastle, Vice President of Strategy& - formerly Booz & Co who spoke of the socioeconomic impact of the oil and gas sector and what this means for Oman s downstream industries. Andrew highlighted the vast potential in Oman as one of the regions fastest growing economies, but he emphasized that any investment decision should be made in consideration of Oman s key socio-economic priorities of; maximizing GDP contribution, diversifying Oman s economy and national income sources, and creating employment in the local economy.
