3 Preface The Organizing Committee warmly welcomes all to the First National Conference on Advanced Trends in Chemical Engineering ATCE2013, during September 26-28, 2013 at Department of Chemical Engineering, Government Engineering College Thrissur, Kerala. ATCE2013 is sponsored by TEQIP Phase-II. ATCE2013 is aimed at bringing together the researchers and academicians of Chemical Engineering fraternity to share innovative ideas and discuss the recent developments in this field. Paper presentation sessions and invited talks by eminent researchers and academicians are the prime attractions of this conference. This publication comprises of the papers accepted for presentation in ATCE2013. All the papers submitted have been peer reviewed by experts from the scientific committee depending on the subject matter of the paper. Selection of papers for presentation was on the basis of originality, significance, and conformity with the purpose of the conference. We express our sincere thanks to all those involved in organizing this conference for their support and timely help. 4 About the College Government Engineering College, Thrissur, is one of the most prestigious institutions in Kerala. Started in 1957 offering fewer courses, GEC Thrissur has marched ahead to become one of the most sought after technical education centres in Kerala. College campus is spread over an area of 75 acres and located at Ramavarmapuram, 5km from Thrissur town and 6km from Thrissur railway station. Prof.S. Rajaraman, a civil engineer of international repute and author of many engineering books was the first Principal. He along with Prof. M.P. Mathew and Prof. V.S. Nair (the then Head of the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering respectively) formed the triumvirate that gave the college a strong footing and set the pace for the onward growth and development of the college. Affiliated to University of Calicut, the college offers B.Tech and M.Tech courses in various disciplines. Courses offered are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation. The college is an approved research centre of the University of Calicut.

5 About the Department The department of chemical engineering set up in 1962, was the first of its kind in Kerala offering B. Tech degree through a four year course. During the course the student is given an in depth understanding of the basic principles of engineering aided by well equipped and sophisticated equipments, by highly qualified and experienced faculty, enabling the student to groom into a professionally competent chemical engineer. Since the Govt. Engineering College, Thrissur is situated very near to the industrial areas of Cochin, Palakkad and Coimbatore; there is a close rapport between the industries, government departments or agencies and the department of Chemical Engineering. A lot of industrial research and consultancy works are carried out by the faculty members, especially in the field of industrial pollution control, safety, energy and environment, much of which earned wide acclamation and received awards and recognitions. Live industrial problems were identified and given as project works for final year B.Tech. and M.Tech. students. The department is an approved Ph.D centre of the University of Calicut.

6 About the Conference National Conference on Advanced Trends in Chemical Engineering ATCE 2013 is scheduled to be held during September 2013 in Government Engineering College Thrissur, Kerala, India. ATCE 2013 is envisaged to be a platform for researchers and academicians of Chemical Engineering fraternity to share innovative ideas and thoughts. The objective of this conference is to initiate a creative discussion on the advances in the area of Chemical Engineering research. Apart from paper presentation sessions, the conference will include invited talks by eminent scientists and professors on advanced trends in various fields on Chemical Engineering.

7 Message from Chairman The National Conference on Advanced Trends in Chemical Engineering (ATCE2013) is being organized by the Department of Chemical Engineering of Government Engineering College Thrissur. This conference is being supported by the TEQIP Phase II. Government Engineering College, Thrissur is one of the most prestigious institutions under Department of Technical Education in Kerala offering under Graduate, Post Graduate and Research Programmes in different Engineering Disciplines. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I extend a warm welcome to all the participants of ATCE2013. We are keenly looking forward to making this an exciting and memorable conference. 8 Message from Program Chair The National Conference on Advanced Trends in Chemical Engineering ATCE 2013 sponsored by the TEQIP Phase II is scheduled to be held during September 2013 in Government Engineering College Thrissur, Kerala. Being part of the first institution to start a B.Tech course in Chemical Engineering in Kerala, the Department of Chemical Engineering has contributed significantly to the progress of Chemical Engineering in India with thousands of its alumni going on to become eminent scientists, CEOs, entrepreneurs and top company executives. The department also offers Post Graduate program in Chemical Engineering. Through these years the department has grown to one of the prominent research centres for Chemical Engineering in Kerala. The role of chemical engineers in society is becoming increasingly important. Design, implementation and management are entrusted with the chemical engineers in any process where a transformation of matter occurs. Chemical engineers play a pivotal role in almost all emerging fields of technology and researchers in these fields contribute significantly to innovative development. ATCE 2013 is envisaged to be a platform for researchers and academicians to share and discuss the current developments and future prospects of Chemical Engineering research. I welcome all the participants of ATCE2013 to the Department of Chemical Engineering. We aim at making this conference a memorable one with experts from various fields of Chemical Engineering sharing their research experiences and giving light to the latest trends in the realm of Chemical Engineering Research.
