1 March 2019 Highlights of 2018 On February 20th, our Annual General Meeting was held with 48 members in attendance. In addition to approving the budget and hearing reports from various committees, many of the highlights from 2018 were reported. It has been a very eventful year. The Board has worked very hard (and almost full time) as volunteers to serve the membership. Along with countless other volunteers, it was possible to meet an unprecedented number of challenges, including; - managing to completion a $900,000 renovation, - updating our financial accounting systems and adjusting to new computers, - bringing our constitution and bylaws into compliance with new provincial and federal requirements, - maintaining the functioning of many activities through the renovations, - raising massive funds to reduce the debt-load of the renovations, - settling our refugee family, - raising our public image with innovative signage and informative monthly newsletters, - creating a welcoming decor in our addition, Meet our new Board of Directors on Page 6.

3 3 President s Message February has fled away remarkably quickly, as happens when there is a lot going on. I kept finding things piling up, both here at the Centre and personally. At the Centre we continued to fine tune our operations and clear up the last of the deficiencies of the building project. The dividing curtain in the dining room arrived and was installed and the last of the auditorium floor discrepancies were taken care of. On a personal note I had cataract surgery on my left eye, so was off for a few days. Peggy and I sold our Condo here and are moving off the Coast at the end of April. I did not seek reelection as president as it would not be fair to you and the new Board of Directors. February was one of the coldest months in many years, making our operations problematic. We were closed for two days due to snow and difficulty getting the kitchen staffed. A number of scheduled events were also cancelled or postponed. The Federal Minister for Seniors Hon. Filomena Tassi, together with Pam Goldsmith- Jones our MP visited the Sunshine Coast on Monday February 11 th for meetings with seniors groups. They visited and toured the Centre, and were extremely impressed what we have accomplished. The fund raising continues; the ferry raffle sold out earning a $3, profit, the Name a Chair project is on-going as is the Quilt Raffle. The AGM was held on the 20 th with 48 members signed in, the Annual Reports were presented, and the 2019 Budget approved. The new Board of Directors for 2019 were elected by acclamation and sworn in. I have been blessed as your President with having the unwavering support of all of you and the Board of Directors. With your help we have increased our capacity to serve not only our members but also the community at large. I have every confidence that I am leaving the Centre in good hands and you will continue to thrive. Thank You, Sincerely, Wayne A. (Charlie) Jensen

5 5 Pickleball Tournament A fun pickleball tournament was held in February with a round robin.format. so everyone in each group played with everyone else. Congratulations to our winners - Warren McCrimmon and Ed Harker and our runners up - Sue Brown, Brian Clingwall, Mary Pinniger, Ev Harker & John Denham. Thanks to Bert for being the lead organizer of these fun tournaments and everyone who volunteers and comes out in support. 6 6 Welcome to our new board! To quote our Board Secretary, Mary Bittroff, I have served on many boards, both public and private, and I feel that our board was probably the best qualified and the most dedicated in my experience and I thank you all for the privilege of working with you. Thank you to departing members of the Board Ron Atkinson & Tess Apedaile for your years of service. 7 $1,000 Ferry Card Raffle Winner 7 Gerhard Seifert, of Robert s Creek, was the winner of the $1,000 BC Ferries Experience Card, at the Valentine s Day raffle draw. I never win anything! Gerhard exclaimed happily, as he posed for pictures. That s because you never buy a ticket, he wife joked. Turns out she bought the ticket for him. The Ferry Card Raffle tickets sold out because many people stepped up to lend a hand, selling tickets and promoting the project. Outstanding sales efforts were made by: Judy Rother, who sold 90 tickets, Leagh Gabriel sold 60; Lynn Anderson 50, Barbara Bell 50 and Joan Stevenson 50.. The raffle organizer, Peggy Malcolm, wants to recognize the outstanding contributions of the people who sold large numbers of tickets; the people who manned ticket tables at the Malls: Connie Nordli, Carolyn Breadner, and Beth Jones; and scores of others who sold tickets to friends and neighbours. People voluntarily took posters, by ones and twos, to put up from Gibsons to Pender Harbour. Tony Stroud designed the tickets. Lots of self-proclaiming non-ferry users bought because the SSAC does good work. Clearly it was a group effort that made it such a resounding success. Thank you all!
