TOGETHER WE ACHIEVE NOVEMBER 2017 LINK UP CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2017 PRINCIPAL'S REPORT BY KELLY SUMMERS YEAR 12 STUDENTS GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN. Hedland Senior High School's Year 12 students were farewelled by the whole school community this term at the Year 12 Awards Presentation held at Wanangkura stadium. Despite the heat on the day, a record number of parents and family members turned out to support the Year 12s, as well as representatives from local industry and organisations. Port Hedland Primary School Principal Yvonne Denham delivered an inspiring address to Year 12 students, where she spoke about how growing up and studying in Hedland provides students with opportunities they wouldn't have HEDLAND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL anywhere else in WA. Kane Edwards was awarded VET Dux, while Caleb Rattery was named ATAR Dux, after recieving the highest course marks in their chosen study path. Britney Lenton and and Ananda Tiari were awarded Student of the Year awards. Morgan Howrie and Tore Bule-Turner presented their last addresses as Head Girl and Head Boy before passing on their titles to Year 11 students Tess Mellberg and Corey Russell. We'd like to thank the HSHS P&C for providing the refreshments in the Jimblebar Room after the ceremony. Earlier this term, the community of Hedland joined with us to celebrate the incredible successes of our Year 12s of Since then we have been privileged to share the excitement as students keep us up to date with offers of apprenticeships, work and early offers into university programs. Thank you to everyone in our school community who has supported these students throughout their high school career and helped shaped them into the outstanding young men and women we saw on stage. As I type, we have 33 students sitting their ATAR exams. We wish them all of the very best and have no doubt the revision work they did last holidays was worth the sacrifice. For students and staff still at Hedland, things have not slowed down. This week our Science Department hosted the Pilbara Education Partnership STEM Expo. Over 45 primary students from all over the Pilbara had an opportunity to experience a range of STEM activities here at the high school. Our dedicated science staff lead by CONTINUES ON PAGE 2

YOHFEST Last term students from Year 7 to 12 performed in the YOHfest Pilbara Regional finals alongside Karratha Senior High School students. Held at the Matt Dann Theatre, the evening featured drama and dance pieces that explored youth health issues chosen by students, including cyberbullying, Australian identity and perfectionism. Hedland SHS recieved six certificates of merit for students' creative and technically outstanding original pieces. LAURA FRANCIS HOLA Arts Sara Zadnik, did an outstanding job designing and running lessons that ranged from eyeball dissections through to coding activities. During the evening, the group had fun activities in and around the pool planned and supervised by the Health and Phys Ed team. From all accounts it was an exceptional experience for everyone. Planning is going full steam ahead for the Year 6 into 7 Transition week. Heads of Learning Areas are working hard to ensure that our 2018 Year 7s are confident and excited about what Hedland SHS has to offer. The week is designed to give the students a taster of high school life and help them navigate around the campus. We are preparing to welcome over 208 Year 6s to our school community. The parent information evening will be held in our school library on Wednesday 15 November. On the night we will explain the transition process, rationale and structure of the week. We will also explain school operations and allow time for Health and Wellbeing to speak. The forum will conclude with a Q&A session. We would encourage all Year 6 parents to attend. This term we had WA Premier Mark Gowan visit our Trade Training Centre to launch our rail installation. We are now the only school in Australia with a rail installation onsite for training trades students. The success of the Trade Training Centre in 2017 has been outstanding. The team in this space are incredible. Under the stewardship of Mr Renner, the TTC students have been stars on the ABC's social media sites, spoken to two premiers and competed in the WorldSkills VETiS Metals and Engineering competition. We are proud to have a gold, silver and bronze award winners in the group. The Year 11 Trade Training Centre students are planning to welcome in the next group of Year 10 Try a Trade students next week; ready to commit to a week of hard work in the TTC and hot and dirty work out in industry in order to prepare them for a shining future. KELLY SUMMERS Principal YEAR 8 ART Miss Williams Year 8 Art class has been learning about Picaso's work and have created their own masterpieces inspired by his techniques.

DATES TO REMEMBER SCIENCE Two Year 11 Human Biology classes dissected rats as part of their studies on the reproductive systems, fertilisation and foetal development last term. We had two pregnant rats, a male rat and a non-pregnant female rat to dissect, in order to compare the three. I was really pleased at the respect shown by students towards the rats who had unknowingly donated their bodies to help us learn. Even students who seemed squeamish at the start were really interested. It was a great learning experience, and students worked really well. Year 7 Science classes recently looked at forces and simple and complex machines. This involved an investigation using ramps, marbles and stopwatches. SARA ZADNIK HOLA Science P&C The next P&C meeting will be held: Date: 8 November 2017 Time: 6.30pm Venue: Board room (in the front office) The P&C would like to thank WesTrac for their kind donation of water and cool drinks for the Year 12 Awards Presentation. 5 RAIL LAUNCH OPTI-MINDS STATE FINAL CERTIFICATE II RAIL INFRASTRUCTURE Premier Mark McGowan visited Hedland Senior High School this week to hammer in the last piece of rail on the new track donated to the school by BHP. At 53 metres in length and valued at $280,000, it is the biggest rail installation of its kind at an Australian high school. The rail track will provide students with the unique opportunity to learn new jobready skills and graduate with hands-on experience in rail installation. Ms Summers said the school was excited to receive this generous donation and for the opportunities that it provides the students. The Rail and Infrastructure program highlights the level of innovation possible when schools and industry work together to address gaps in the local skills market. Being able to position students for successful careers across various sectors of the mining industry is really important for the growth of our region and our school, Ms Summers said. TTC students got a little taste of being news stars - getting to chat with the Premier and the media on the launch day. YEAR 9 STUDENTS BELLA GEPTE, SKYE STEWART, TARA MELLBERG, ALEX BRITCLIFFE, DODI TUANDO AND HELEN SANG TRAVELLED TO PERTH FOR THE OPTIMIND STATE FINALS In Week 9, Term 3 our OptiMinds team found out that we d been invited to compete in the OptiMinds State Finals at Curtin University after achieving a qualifying score in the Pilbara Finals. After a brief celebration, we immediately started packing and planning for what was to come. On Friday 15 September we landed at Perth Airport, accompanied by Mr Blazeski and Miss See Tho. We shortly arrived at Curtin University and were given a tour of the campus and its facilities by a former student guide and some studying students. Afterwards, we headed off for some lunch and shopping. We then drove to SIDE Accommodation (School of Isolated and Distance Education), to deposit our luggage and begin practicing some critical and creative thinking exercises for us to prepare our team for the competition ahead. Early Saturday morning we headed to Curtin University for the OptiMinds State Finals. As we arrived, Kathy Boyatzis, the coordinator of the competition, escorted the teams into separate rooms. Teams were given a question based off of either Social Sciences, Science Engineering or Language Literature. We participated in Division 2 in Social Sciences. Teams were given 4 hours to create and rehearse a presentation answering the topic/question with a limited amount of resources until they were called up to present. To add even more pressure to the event, during the 4 hours practice time judges would randomly enter the room and present a Spontaneous Challenge for the team to answer together. Our team presented our play Waste of Space and Life, a play about individuals committing suicide and the effects before and after; quite a confronting topic. We were very surprised by the grand applause we received from the other teams and the judges. Unfortunately we were closely beaten out by Saint Brigid s College, but recieved honours for our presentation. We then went out to Krispy Kreme to grab some commiseration donuts and watched horror movie IT as a treat for our efforts. On Sunday we headed back to Hedland. Thank you to Mr Blazeski and Miss See Tho for giving up their weekend (again!). Next year s competition better watch out 2018 will be our year! DODI TUANDO YEAR 9 STUDENT COUNCILLOR

VETIS WORLD SKILLS COMPETITION FOODBANK VISIT Eight Year 11 Trade Training Centre students competed in the VETis World Skills Competition Pilbara Regionals held at Hedland Senior High School in Week 2, Term 4. Last term Foodbank's Food Sensations program ran workshops with Year 7, 8 and 9 Home Economics students, with a focus on cooking fresh, healthy and delicous food. The menu included spanish chicken and rice, a veggie-packed stir-fry, homemade flatbreads, lime-flavoured water and healthy muffins. Participants were challenged to build a functioning vice during the six hour competition. A key focus of the competition was the quality of participants' planning and design of their vice. BHP Apprentice Supervisor Chris Webber emphasised to students the importance of knowing exctly how they're going to make something before they pick up a blow torch or touch a grinder. Following industry safety practices was also a focus of the competition, which was no problem for our Trade Training Centre students who always practice exemplary safety while in the TTC. Congratulations to Brenden Bush, who secured the gold medal place for the Regionals with a score of 72 out of 100 points. Brenden has been invited to Perth for a breakfast hosted for all Work Skills gold medalists. Dependant on the scores achieved in the other WA Finals, Brenden may also be asked to compete in the WA team in the National finals held next year. Ethan Smith was the silver medalist for the Regionals, while Cody Broome and Corey Russell were tied for the bronze medal. Congratulations to all the Trade Training Centre students on completing this highpressure and technically complex challenge. PHILIP MURRAY HOLA Technology & Enterprise WELCOME CENTRE Any students who want to apply for the Trade Training Centre in 2018 are encouraged to submit their applications by Tuesday 1 November The forms can be found on Connect. JAMES RENNER TRADE TRAINING CENTRE TEACHER Things got a bit spooky in the Welcome Centre on Halloween! We made creepy cupcakes, scary masks and had lots of fun decorating the room and dressing up. 7 SHOOTING GOALS VSWANS 100 CLUB Our Kicking Goals and Shooting Goals '100 Club' were invited to a reward morning tea at the end of last term - where the amazing hospitality students and canteen staff had prepared delicious homemade curry and smoothies for students. The '100 Club' students are students who have had 100% attendance this year, no behaviour reports and have remembered their training gear every session. MCHAPPY DAY NEW ZEALAND TRIP the Diamonds players after the game. On the second week of the school holidays, the Shooting Goals girls said kia ora to New Zealand as we arrived in Auckland. The next day began with a chilly morning tram ride and a gondola tour of Christchurch. We had a fantastic afternoon and evening at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve and then Ko Tane Cultural show. We headed straight to Rainbow s End theme park for an adrenaline hit after our all-night flight after our first ride we were all very awake again! The next day was competition time Hedland won against Birkenhead College with a very close 3 goal win. We checked out the Auckland Skytower before heading to the real game the Constellation Cup. Our girls were dressed head-to-head in green and gold and ended up on the big screen quite a few times! The next day was a bit of a recovery day we shopped til we dropped and then hit SnowPlanet for some snow games. This term we had 58 Kicking and Shooting Goals program participants raised money for McHappy Day at McDonald's South Hedland. Our students washed and dried over 50 cars! A great effort! We started the next day by getting our jam on at Les Mills Auckland City, then played tourists at Auckland Botanical Gardens, followed by a visit to Muriwai Beach to see the black sand. A big thanks to McDonalds South Hedland who support Kicking and Shooting Goals in our fundraising efforts throughout the year.thanks also to the Hedland community for supporting our programs throughout the year at all our car washes. We then headed off to Christchurch to watch the Constellation Cup Game 2. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the two Cup matches and were stoked to meet some of The Kicking Goals and Shooting Goals programs have a key focus on students giving back to the community - whether that's through coaching younger kids footy or netball, or fundraising events like this one. I think we all had a win with some substantial funds raised and our youth having fun working together and giving back. SHANE BEROS KICKING GOALS COORDINATOR We had a chilly but educational morning at the International Antarctic Centre just a bit different from Hedland! We spent the afternoon at Quake City Christchurch s new museum about the recent earthquakes there. Our trip to Akaroa was a little hijacked by the weather, but we still visited the town and saw the beautiful French inspired buildings. We finished our last day in NZ with a coaching clinic for Christchurch Netball. Our Shooting Goals girls were absolute superstars! We received many positive comments about the way the girls interacted with the young kiwi netballers. We then played a game against Hornby Netball Club, as close game but we went down by 3 goals in the end. A great day to wrap up a great trip! TRACEY SWAMI SHOOTING GOALS COORDINATOR

CYCLONE INFORMATION FOR PARENTS ROBOTICS CLUB In March 2018, Hedland SHS students in Year 9 and 10 will take part in Hedland s rookie year in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). FRC aims to provide students with the opportunity to learn about engineering, programming, teamwork and design by building a robot to compete in a national competition in Sydney. This competition is not only about the robot, but also the students' personal and professional development by ensuring that FRC's motto 'Gracious Professionalism' underpins students' attitude throughout the competition and planning. Throughout the season the students will be given opportunities to work with skilled staff, Macquarie University engineers, local mentors and other FRC teams to further their skills. Lately we've been working on students innovative skills through problem solving activties such as building the tallest magazine tower and making plastic cup pyramids without touching the cups- with very entertaining outcomes. We are excited to see the students grow and learn as a team by taking part in this international competition. For more information, please see either Mr Pilapil or Mr Colic.
