1 NIU offers nearly 40 summer day camps and residential camps in DeKalb during June and July. Residential campers enjoy an authentic campus experience, including sleeping and eating in residence halls and enjoying planned evening activities. Counselors supervise students at all times. To sign up to recieve the latest editions of this newsletter, please visit June Camps Huskie Sports Camps Popular athletics camps include athletic training, baseball, cross country, football, men's soccer, volleyball, and wrestling. Top collegiate coaches provide instruction to young athletes. Campers are grouped according to age and skill level and use NIU facilities. June 6 through July 25 Residential Beginner s Imagination Camp Blast off at this year s Beginner s Imagination Camp 2012: A Space Odyssey. Launch into the stars at 17,500 mph aboard the Children s Community Theatre s very own space command module. Campers will not only learn about the galaxy, but will create their own theatrical performance, complete with cosmic songs and gravitational dance. This two-week camp session runs from 9:00 am until noon each day at Northern Illinois Unversity s O Connell Theatre and concludes with public performances at 7 pm, Friday, June 22 and 2 pm, Saturday, June 23. Cost of the two-week camp is $95 and includes daily instruction and participation in the two performances. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify. June Grades 9-12 Residential sljackson@niu.edu Engineering Amusement Campers will design various amusement park activities such as roller coasters, learn how engineers optimize traffic flow, investigate park food safety, and concoct their own treats. 2 Creative Writing Campers will develop their skills in writing poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. Journals, free writing, guided writing, structured exercises, revision strategies, and reading are all part of the week's activities. Instructors will help campers develop their unique voice and style. June Grades 9-12 Residential "Just for Girls" - Game Design 1 In the first week, girls will create their own characters and stories and then design their own online, video games complete with visual and sound effects. June Ages Day aclick@niu.edu Nanotechnology Camp High school students will explore the amazing and dynamic world at the nano scale. Campers will gain a comprehensive understanding through hands-on lab activities that introduce them to the unique properties at the nanoscale. Nanoscience and nanotechnology offer many career opportunities in technology, engineering, and the sciences. June High School Day rajashankar@niu.edu Advanced Imagination Camp Senior camp will perform Legally Blonde: The Musical with just two weeks of intense practice where students are treated to every aspect of creating a musical. Daily instruction includes music, acting, and choreography and will expose students to other instruction like stage combat, improvisational acting, character development, costume creation, makeup design, and more. Cost of the twoweek camp, which meets at the O Connell Theaters, is $125 and includes daily instruction, a cast t-shirt, participation in four public performances, and a dinner during dress rehearsal. June 18-July 1 Entering 7th graduating Seniors Day info@cctonstage.com Camp Invention Adventures in science, technology, engineering, and math include problem-solving on an alien planet, green city design, building roller coasters, and inventing new machines from discarded small appliances. Through imaginative activities, campers practice creative thinking and teamwork. June Grades 1-6 Day psievert@niu.edu Sci-Camp: Environment and Sustainability Get ready to play at the farm, in the forest, and with green technologies. Campers will test water quality, experiment with alternative fuels, and visit a local sustainable farm among other green activities, accompanied by professors of anthropology, geology, biology, geography, and technology.

3 Film Camp Campers will work with experienced media producers, camera operators and directors while learning the basics of digital video production from storyboard to DVD. Each camper will take home a personal DVD to share with family and friends. Speech Camp Develop and enhance your knowledge in a specific area of speech by selecting or writing speeches, honing research skills, memorizing pieces, and practicing the art of effective delivery. Enjoy the cooperative, noncompetitive spirit of this popular camp! Robotics Participants will learn how to build and program robots with the LEGO Mindstorms NXTRobotics system. Using inventive and creative thinking, teams of campers will accomplish increasingly difficult technology tasks during the week. Participants interested in robotics competitions will get a head start from this camp. Campers are in a production that rehearses daily and is performed at the end of the week. July 8-13 Grades 6-8 Residential dbooth@niu.edu Exploring Science through Art Create, make, innovate! Take your art work to the next level by investigating the science behind making cool art. Create wind-powered kinetic sculptures; use polarized light to create paintings with tape; animate your art digitally; color your world with laser spiro-graphs; explore the chemistry of color through tie-dye; learn the secrets of making cool pop-up cards. July 8-15 Grades 7-9 Residential pietrowski@niu.edu Exploring Nature: Habitats and the Environment Did you know NIU has a creek, a river, and two lagoons? We will also explore the wooded area and wildflowers and see how wildlife has adapted to living near people. Both Exploring camps will live on the same dorm floor, take meals together, and enjoy many of the same evening activities, including a trip to Davis Hall Observatory and bowling in the Huskie Den. Jam-packed with performing, learning, and listening, jazz camp is for musicians who want to improve their understanding and performance of the jazz tradition. July Grades 8-12 Residential dbooth@niu.edu Visual Arts Camp Working with faculty, students, and alumni from the NIU School of Art, campers are encouraged to be innovative as they experiment with new materials, techniques, and ideas while producing portfolio-quality work in a university environment. Learn how to write, shoot, anchor, and edit a full news package. You will work with experienced journalists, media producers, and news directors while developing writing and production skills. You will leave camp with a DVD to showcase your work. 5 Exploring Careers in Health and Human Sciences Explore the many career possibilities in the health and human sciences fields through hands-on experience in university labs and work with health care professionals. Includes clinical lab sciences, nursing, dietetics and nutrition, physical therapy and other fields.
