2 Camp Dates & Hours June 23-27, 2014 Camp for Elementary School Students: Rising 3 rd grade-rising 5 th grade Full day camp- 8:30-4:30 daily Robot Go! As extreme builders & engineers, campers will explore the effects of natural disasters such as storms, quakes, tsunamis and more. You will be challenged with the LEGO Mindstorms NXT robotic programing and will build your own robotic creations. Campers will work together as a team to create an innovative solution to aid in the event of a natural disaster. Camp will conclude with presentations, Robot runs, and more at SciWorks on Friday. Parents should drop off and pick up at SciWorks on Friday, June 27. SciWorks is located at 400 W. Hanes Mill Road, Winston-Salem. June 23-27, 2014 Camps for Middle School Students: Rising 6 th grade-rising 8 th grade Full day camp-8:30-4:30 daily Select One: Imagine It! You will create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art through a computer program developed by MIT called Scratch. Campers will explore Makey Makey, an invention kit for the 21 st century also developed by MIT. Turning everyday objects into touchpads and combine them with the internet. What will you make with your Makey Makey? Campers will also create, design, and program your own apps using MIT App Inventor. Camp will conclude with a full day workshop with WFU Computer Science professors and walking tour of WFU on Friday. On Friday, parents should drop off and pick up at WFU Admission Office located in the Porter Byrum Welcome Center. Picture This! Lights! Camera! Action! Bring your creativity to life using stop motion animation. You will explore movie design and production, give movement to simple sketches, and learn Adobe Premiere software to create a video from still photography. Camp will conclude with a full day workshop at SECCA on Friday. On Friday, parents should drop off and pick up at SECCA located at 750 Marguerite Drive, Winston-Salem.

3 Power-up! Power Up! is for middle school students interested in the science and technology of how power is made on our planet. Campers will be introduced to wind, solar, and water-turbine technologies as well as personal power scavenging such as thermoelectrics (power from your body's heat) and piezoelectrics (power from your body's motion). The camp will provide hands on activities in a number of power technologies where the campers will work in teams to build and explore examples of the technologies, understand how to estimate power outputs mathematically, and measure the outcomes of their work. Ideally, campers will leave the camp with an appreciation for the many different ways we generate power, the requirements for such technologies to be efficient and finally quantitative ability to compare power sources. The final day of the camp will be a Power Up challenge that allows the teams to compete against each other in the creation of water turbines. This activity will make specific connections with national TSA (Technology Student Association) competitions. This camp is led and taught by professors and graduate students from Wake Forest University Center for Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials. Registration: There are two ways to register your child for camp: 1. 4 Absentee Policy There are no refunds for missing days due to sickness, injury, etc. Drop Off/Pick Up: All students should be dropped off and picked up using the traffic circle located on Ivy Street. Students will enter the doors to the first floor of the Hanes building. Camp staff will monitor the traffic circle during the following times each day: Drop off- 8:15-8:30 Pick up- 4:30-4:45 **If you arrive late or do not pick up on time, you should report to the front office on Indiana Avenue. There will not be any staff present on campus after 5:00. If parents are late to pick up their child they should notify the Camp Director immediately. Snack & Lunch All students will be provided a snack during camp time. Students who attend a full day camp will need to bring a lunch and drink from home. **If your child has any food allergies please make a note of it on the registration form. Medication If your child requires medication during camp hours, you are required to please follow these steps: All medication must be given to a camp staff upon arrival. Only the Camp Director will administer medication to a child. Indicate clearly time(s) and dosage. Prescribed medication must be in original package, indicating child s name, prescription date, dosage, doctor s name, and name of drug. No over-the-counter medication will be given without the written consent of the child s guardian. If your child uses an EPI pen, your child s camp staff will carry it during camp hours. Water Bottles Students are allowed and encouraged to bring a water bottle each day.

5 WHAT NOT TO BRING: Electronic Devices: IPODS, video games, cell phones, etc are not necessary at camp. If electronic devices become a problem during camp time, a camp staff member may take them and return those items to parents at the end of the day. Residential campers will report Sunday evening, and parents need to pickup Friday afternoon Thank you for registering your child to attend our fun-filled summer camps. Our camps are packed with many opportunities to learn, make friends with other Deaf or Hard of Hearing kids, and explore outlets
