5 About the Sports Super Centre The Sports Super Centre opened in September 2000 as an elite training base for international athletes competing at the Sydney Olympic Games. Over more than a decade, the centre has played host to many elite sporting teams from Australia and around the world who have visited the sunny Gold Coast to train, play and stay. Today, the Sports Super Centre is known as a multipurpose sports centre for health and fitness excellence. We cater for all sports in one location. The centre features a range of world-class sporting facilities, including a synthetic competition hockey pitch, a 50m international-standard swimming pool, athletics track with turf infield, a 600m2 open-air gym and more. Owned and operated by the Queensland Government s Department of Education and Training (DET), the centre is located on almost 20 acres on the northern Gold Coast s Runaway Bay. The Sports Super Centre is located only a short drive from the Gold Coast s busy tourism mecca Surfers Paradise, and the thriving central business districts of Southport and Broadbeach. In 2018, the Sports Super Centre will return to the international elite sporting stage as an official training base for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018). Our Elite Sporting History The Sports Super Centre has a rich history of hosting elite athletes, teams and other sporting groups from Australia and abroad: Athletes training at the Sports Super Centre prior to the 2000 Olympics produced 31 medals. Countries that trained at the centre ahead of the Olympic Games included England, Germany, USA, Norway, the Bahamas, Barbados, Estonia, Romania, Poland, Switzerland, Kazakhstan, Morocco and Ireland. During the Rugby World Cup in 2006, the centre hosted teams from Samoa, New Zealand, England, South Africa, Ireland and Tonga, along with Australia s own Wallabies. For triathlon, the Sports Super Centre has enjoyed national teams from Italy, Brazil, Poland, USA, Portugal, England and Germany. The centre has hosted many Australian and international NRL, rugby union and AFL teams. The Sports Super Centre was used as a training base for the Gold Coast Titans in 2008/09. Paralympians have regularly prepared for international events at the Sports Super Centre. Olympic gold medal sailors have trained at, and are closely affiliated with, the centre. The English Women s netball team trained and stayed at the Sports Super Centre ahead of the 2015 Netball World Cup. Players from Australian women s soccer team, the Matildas, have regularly trained at the Sports Super Centre. The centre hosted Japanese, Brazilian and New Zealand swimming teams preparing for Pan Pacific Games in Page 5 of 20

About the Gold Coast More than a city famous for its sun, surf and sand, the Gold Coast covers an area of 1400 square kilometres and stretches along 57 kilometres of Australia s eastern coastline. It is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia, with a population of 535,000. Beyond our beautiful beaches you will discover a lush rainforest hinterland with breathtaking scenery, all a short drive from our city centre. The city s climate is sub-tropical with an average of 10 hours of sunshine, 300 days a year. Our city s natural environment, mixed with our world class sporting infrastructure and associated service providers, make it the perfect training and competition environment for elite athletes. Welcoming close to 12 million visitors each year, the Gold Coast is Australia s premier tourist destination, offering a vibrant mix of shopping, accommodation, entertainment, restaurants and an abundance of natural attractions for people from all over the world to enjoy. The city has a history of hosting iconic sporting events with an incredibly strong sporting community. The Gold Coast is also home to a range of peak sporting bodies and the city is continually investing and improving its infrastructure. In 2018, the Gold Coast will host a sporting highlight for the nation, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018). Approximately $320 million worth of new sporting infrastructure is being constructed in readiness for the Games and the legacy from the Games will ensure our city is a highly desirable sporting destination for elite athletes in years to come. 7 Training and Competition Facilities Competition-standard Synthetic Hockey Pitch The Sports Super Centre has a world-class, competitionstandard synthetic hockey pitch. The state-of-the-art, fully-certified facility will be a training ground during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC 2018). The Sports Super Centre will have one of only a small number of Games-standard hockey pitches on the Gold Coast, fit for elite international competition. The Gold Coast is fast becoming a hub for the hugely popular sport of hockey. On the northern Gold Coast in particular, the Gold Coast Hockey Centre is located only a few minutes down the road from the Sports Super Centre. 8 Training and Competition Facilities Accredited Athletics Track and Field The Sports Super Centre has a brand new International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF)-accredited athletics track with turf infield. Located at the heart of the centre, the track and field facility accommodates a wide range of running, jumping and throwing disciplines for individuals and teams from elite to beginner. The versatile track and field not only caters for athletics, with a turf centre also providing a competing and training space for non-athletics sports. 9 Training and Competition Facilities Fitness Centre Our Fitness Centre s centrepiece is a huge 600sqm openair gym - undoubtedly one of the most unique on the Gold Coast. Situated under high sails, the Sports Super Centre s gym facility is naturally ventilated by fresh sea breezes blowing off the nearby Broadwater. Our gym has a large range of bikes, rowing machines, fixed weight machines and free weights. 10 Training and Competition Facilities Aquatic Centre Our Aquatic Centre boasts one of only a limited number of heated 50m swimming pools in the city. Paired with the Gold Coast s near-perfect climate conditions, the Sports Super Centre s Aquatic Centre is the perfect location for training, competition or recovery. Year-round, the 50m pool is the warmest on the Gold Coast - making it perfect for competition and tranining in winter. The Gold Coast Aquatic Centre a competition venue for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games is located a short 15-minute drive from the Sports Super Centre. 11 Training and Competition Facilities Beach Volleyball Courts The Sports Super Centre has two internationally accredited beach volleyball courts. Situated in front of our Accommodation lodges, the courts are ideal for training, competition, or rest and relaxation for elite athletes. With the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) recently announcing beach volleyball will be included as a Games sport, the Sports Super Centre is one of the only sporting complexes in the city with an accredited training and competition facility. The Sports Super Centre has smaller meeting rooms for coaching sessions or smaller gatherings. Our knowledgeable and experienced staff are also able to provide sports-specific workshops and seminars on a wide range of subjects. For athletes and sporting groups who do not travel with their own sports medicine team, the centre provides access to some of the most qualified and well-respected clinicians on the Gold Coast. Many of our sports medicine clinicians are also athletes, so they can treat based on personal sporting experience as well as professional expertise. 17 The City Away From Sport As Australia s premier tourist destination with over 12 million visitors per year, the city has much to offer outside of sport. From Australia s best beaches, rainforests and waterways to worldclass theme parks, convention services, diverse events and cultural activities, there is something for everyone. Popular music festival, Blues on Broadbeach In addition to natural beauty, the Gold Coast offers the largest number of themed attractions in the southern hemisphere. This includes Warner Bros. Movie World, Wet N Wild Water World, Sea World, Dreamworld, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, White Water World and the Australian Outback Spectacular. The Gold Coast s thriving restaurant and entertainment districts are only a short drive from the Sports Super Centre. There are also several shopping centres closeby, including Runaway Bay Shopping Village and Harbour Town. 18 Travel & Transportation TRAVEL DETAILS The Sports Super Centre is located at Runaway Bay on the northern Gold Coast, and is easily accessible from both domestic and international airports on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane. Driving to the Gold Coast Airport takes approximately 40 minutes, and Brisbane Airport is about one hour s drive away. GROUND TRAVEL OPTIONS The Gold Coast has numerous transport companies that can support all your local travel needs. This includes transfers between Brisbane or Gold Coast international airports and transport requirements while in the city. Priority arrangements, including fast track airport clearance and police escorts, can be organised when required. SPORTS SUPER CENTRE BUS SERVICE As an additional service, the Sports Super Centre also has its own private bus service.
