1 NEWS AND NOTES FEBRUARY OPEN LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY Welcome to the New Year. So far we seem to have avoided most of the traditional features of a British Winter, such as fog, ice and snow, instead having to undergo a thorough soaking. Now did the Meteorological Office forecast a cold, dry winter? I really cannot remember. There are no major Australian events this year, but there will no doubt be remembrance of a number of WWI centenaries. The hot news from Australia is that, once again, they have swingeing increases in postage rates being imposed on them by Australia Post. Expect the cost of sending your auction lots to rise substantially. To Society business. It is a matter of some concern that attendance at London meetings recently (with the exception of the one that coincided with a Council Meeting) has been very poor. When only five members turn up, it does not give the speaker confidence that he or she is showing to a thriving Society. Your Council wonders whether the lack of a regular pattern of dates is a contributory factor, and I shall be speaking to the Secretary of the Royal to see whether we will be able to revert to our original pattern of the second Tuesday of each month in due course. We have a new venue for Convention this year. It is in a central location, so I hope that is will be well supported by both residents and day visitors. By the time this is published, you should have made your booking, but it is not too late. You have only the wrath of Keith Hayes to fear if you book a little late, and the social side of the event is always most enjoyable. As an added attraction, this year you do not need to be tortured by the Secretary s notorious Quiz! If you have material that you wish to dispose of, you may wish to provide books for the Circulation Packet. If you do not have empty books to make up, Brian Sullman can supply them. He is always keen to have new material. PGER 7/1/16 i

REPORT ON THE BSAP CHRISTMAS MEETING ON 12 TH DECEMBER 2015 Following the usual warm-up session in the King s Head, a respectable twelve members were in attendance, most of whom had brought material to show. First on was Alan Cross, who had brought three frames of Postage Due material, that illustrated many of the varieties present on Frame Plates 1 and 2. Laurence Kimpton followed with an Airmail Miscellany. This included the 1951 Airmail Survey flight to Chile, with one cover bearing at least one stamp from every stop. This was followed by new routes from Queensland, to destinations such as Fiji and New Guinea, and later to Dutch New Guinea, Norfolk Island, and the New Hebrides. The final section was Laurence s trip in 1999 on the Mail Flight to Groote Eylandt, followed by Concorde visits to Australia (including Air France) and world tour airmails by other means. John Crowe s display featured Francis Chichester, who was a pioneer aviator long before he was a yachtsman. He made the second solo flight to Australia from England. There was mail from an attempted flight to England via the North Pole, but Chichester crashed and abandoned the attempt. In 1936 he completed a flight to England with a passenger. John concluded with material from the 1960 single-handed yacht race and his 1964 round the world voyage in Gypsy Moth IV. Christine Earle, concluding the first round, showed the GVI Zoo series of stamps, designed to promote tourism. The display included correct usages (solo where possible) and a cover probably used just after the Japanese bombing of Darwin. v

6 Ben Palmer opened the second round with a display of the NSW Centenary of European Settlement issue of with values from 1d to 1. Preparation for this issue involved the first public essay competition, which attracted more than 1000 entries. He concentrated on 1he 1/- value and the 1897 trial of stippled paper (a difficult stamp). Also on show was a range of perforations and watermarks and stamps from the 1889 and 1899 printings. Finally he showed imperfs, printings from the new 1908 plate, stamps perf 11 and overprinted OS. The states theme continued with Andrew Mortlock s display of the NSW 9d and 10d issues between 1867 and He included the 9d overprint on 10d, available until He showed a number of choice items ex-hutson, and included a range of papers and perforation varieties. He also showed the Victoria, Queensland and NSW 9d universal, including use on cover an printings on Crown over A paper. The stamp with watermark V4 perf 11 is very scarce. Ian Spencer brought a range of back of the book material., opening with examples of the Queensland Impressed Duty set that runs to 63 values up to There is a range of cancels and watermarks. The final issue was in The decimal equivalents were only in use for 18 months, so are relatively scarce. He followed with Queensland Duty Stamps and Victoria Wages Tax, with values from 1d to 100 and including use in Wages Books. He also showed a requisition sheet for stamps and prints with the values chiselled out. Tom Gillespie ended round two, showing (to use his own words) mixed rubbish that included Balloon Mail and Rocket Mail. This was followed by Goldfields replicas, meter marks, advertising mail, Hospital Benefit Fund stamps, a 1957 Telegram, a PMG card, a YMCA FDC, a stamp buying list and an Australian postcard featuring a crocodile. Round three was opened by Brian Sullman, who showed a range of Australian Rigby-related material. He was followed by Colin Mount, who told us the history behind the President s medal. Graham Keates showed NSW Cinderellas and Fiscals. Finally, Patrick Reid gave his five-frame Pictorial exhibit an airing. It has been is Stampex a couple of times and was exhibited at Europhilex, but has not been shown to the Society before. Patrick thanked all those who had come, and complimented them on the variety of material shown hardly a GV penny red in sight! Most then repaired to the King s Head for the traditional fish and chip supper before journeying home. PGER 8/1/16 vi

7 REPORT ON THE LONDON MEETING OF 20 TH JANUARY 2016 For our meeting featuring members displays, we had a mere seven in attendance. Your Council is currently in negotiation with the Management at No. 41 Devonshire Place to try to return our meeting dates to a regular schedule from the season, Brian Sullman provided an interesting display featuring Edmund Barton. He was the ninth child of an immigrant family, but achieved a first in Classics at university, became a High Court Judge and was also a qualified cricket umpire (hence Brian s interest). As a cricket umpire he was involved in the first recorded pitch invasion, and was credited with pacifying the angry crowd. He has been featured on more Australian stamps than anyone other than royalty. Christine Earle showed a collection of Qantas ephemera, beginning with a 1933 copy of the Gazette. This was followed by reproductions of posters on postcards, a 1943 Airgraph, a selection of First Flight Covers. a Qantas meter mark and a picture of the Qantas building in Sydney. A highlight was the selection of menus featuring old prints of Sydney with the equivalent modern view on the back. Other menus followed, including one for the 50 th Anniversary, Paintings in menus and Captain s Club menus. She concluded with an original flight log, a card signed by the crew, some luggage labels and a special booklet on the Woman s Angle of Travelling. Colin Mount raised some queries. The first concerned the use of the RECORDS postmark [generally used for sending out medals], the second concerned a large and crude ½overprint on GV penny reds used in Western Australia [possibly an unauthorised local overprint applied because of a shortage of ½d stamps]. The post office was not readily discernible from the scan of the stamps. Finally he showed a neat red 2d overprint on a 1d green, supposedly ex-victor Dix. A search of Bulletin articles has not revealed anything about the origin of this item. Alan Cross displayed a wide range of Postage Due material. He began with imprint blocks of the set that featured a redrawn value plate. This was followed by a range of varieties on the 8d value, and a study of the shades of green. He concluded with shades and varieties on the no watermark issue, with all but the 5d (which was in a larger block) in blocks of four. After a break for viewing, Andrew Mortlock began the second round with a display of the Tasmania 2d pictorial. The stamp was printed by four different methods: recess, lithography, electrotypy and stereotypy. The lithographs are interesting as the method was revived in Melbourne, for printing from transfers from the De La Rue plates, after a number of years. The 2d was printed from 28 plates, and he showed the (ex-lancaster, but remounted) stamps from the top and bottom row of each stone. He closed with other 2d pictorial items, including perf 12, kiss-prints and printings from the dirty stone. Finally, Patrick Reid closed proceedings with a display of the Platypus issues used for both postage and revenue. He included die proofs, specimen overprints and examples of both postal and revenue usage. There were also varieties, including imperf between pairs, double and triple overprints and perforations through the middle of the stamp. The Platypus die was stored in the strongroom between 1902 and 1930, but the used to provide new printings for the payment of Wages Tax. He vii

8 ended with a study of the 1 tablet and its overprints. The original delivery of stamps was little used for postage, but it was overprinted Revenue and use is known as late as The stamp overprinted Revenue was further overprinted 5d and later 1/-. Examples were shown of these used on document, and finally he showed a block of the 1/- overprint with the 1/- doubled.
