1 NEWS AND NOTES DECEMBER OPEN LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY So Autumn Stampex, with its Australasian theme, is over and Christmas is almost upon us. The event was considered a success, and the Gems book has been appreciated by those who have got their copy. I still have a number in stock, so you can ensure your copy (an ideal stocking filler) by sending a cheque for 7.50 (UK only) including P&P to the Secretary. Cheques made payable to P Reid, NOT BSAP please. There were 155 frames of Australasian material on display, both competitive and non-competitive, making up almost half the total of frames on display. The Captain Cook lecture was well received and attended, and the Friday night dinner was fully subscribed, most enjoyable and excellent value. It was an excellent opportunity to meet and chat to friends from the New Zealand and Pacific Islands Societies. The only disappointment is that we seem to have gained only one new member. Perhaps this was partly as a result of the decision by the PTS to place dealers stands on the Village Green, so that the Information Stand was not immediately obvious to visitors. Indeed, a number of people only found us on their way out of the show. The Convention next year will be at the Holiday Inn, Markyate (also referred to as Luton South), convenient for the M1 and A5 and not far from Harpenden station. It is, as you will have seen from your Programmes, rather earlier than usual this year as a number of key people will be off to the International in Melbourne in May. I am currently finalising the details of the programme for the weekend, but it will not be hugely different from the usual format. The booking form is included with this issue of the Bulletin, and the pricing has been kept competitive. A number of members are keen on collecting Perfins. If they are not already aware of the problem, may I direct them to the Tasmanian Philatelic Society Bulletin Board: and Stampboards: where there are details of forged perfins being offered on Ebay (and possibly other auction sites). Very much a case of caveat emptor. The current state of the perfin market in Australia places great importance on provenance. May I take this opportunity of wishing all members a Happy and Peaceful Christmas and a philatelically rewarding New Year. liii

AEC SOUTH WEST SECTION MEETING AT HAMPEX - OCTOBER 2012 Whilst the numbers were a little down this year four members gave excellent displays to an audience of eight members and one guest. First up was Colin Tabeart with a fascinating display of postcards and unusual Australian mail from the Ligne T route. Colin was followed by Tony Finlayson who gave us a further insight into Australian Internees mail from WW1. lvii
6 Pat Reid then gave a display of the tourist spots of Port Arthur in Tasmania and Colin Mount finished off the session with some aspects of watermark and perforation varieties of the Australian KGV 1d Red. It was agreed that the afternoon had been both interesting and entertaining which once again showed just what our society is all about. FROM THE LIBRARIAN, BOOKS. A MEMBERS ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AND THOUGHTS ON OUR SECRETARY S OPEN LETTER IN THE BULLETIN - NEWS AND NOTES OCTOBER By DAVID A ADAMS (1066) My congratulations and thanks to Patrick Reid for an interesting and straightforward open letter with all of the very good points most thought making. As requested I am trying to respond here but only with my sort of ramblings. At one time I seem to remember that members main interest used to be published (albeit in a few words) in The Bulletin, when new members joined, but this has long ceased. I am not sure that it had much value because it was so brief. I think (though not sure) I had a complete membership list separate booklet back in 1996, but having moved home 4 times since then and changed my own main interest since that time (and I don t think the listing included a member s interest reference) I am unable to locate it and 16 years or so have gone by. I agree with what I see are the two main points of the letter, recruiting/keeping new members and the establishment of experts in a particular field. Unless we keep providing to the membership an up to date members list with contact details and with their main interests or even all interests, and encourage them to be willing (permission could be asked for on acceptance of membership) to be contacted and contact each other and be prepared to give answers and information/help in a particular field, nothing will happen. Good intentions in my opinion always need further encouragement. This is particularly important for new members to make them feel part of the society, as has already been written by Patrick. The actual link between members in the society is weak unless you happen perhaps to be able to attend the various meetings, the annual Convention and stamp shows/exhibitions. I personally would hesitate to contact another member at will not having really met or exchanged conversations/interests previously and I suspect other members feel the same, and if lviii
7 you hesitate, often the moment is lost. The balance between contact, asking for help/advice and being a nuisance can also be a difficult one. I suppose I am saying are we being friendly enough! So of course someone has to do all this but could not a lot of it be incorporated in what we already publish and once it was established it would be easier to keep up to date. We publish a page of the Officers of the Society in every volume, why not a page of agreeable specialists. The Expert idea might then become self generating as well although we would need a starting point/listing etc. As many of you know I have an interest in the 1d Roo which might be nearing specialist exhaustion for now, (although something often still pops up to add to what is already known) but I would be more than happy to help and to try and advise anyone else: this is already going on with a couple of collectors in Australia but the interest in the UK and among members here seems minimal. Footnote from the Secretary: I know I am renowned for my mania about Tasmania, but I am now concentrating just as much on Underpaid Outgoing Mails of Australia I have found my most productive exchanges have been on with a collector in Queensland that I have only recently met, after a couple of years of interchange, when he came to the UK and our Editor. The power of the internet is very helpful and not intrusive. The stamps and Postal History of Western Australia Tom Gillespie A QUESTION FOR YOU. Do you use 3L transparent 25 x 75 mms label holders? I do. The reason for the question is that I recently ran out of these holders and used the web to find a source, having exhausted all the local stationers, only to find that yes I could have some but I had to buy a full box. Namely 120 of the things. You ve guessed it, I don t need that number! So here s the sales pitch. I had to pay for ten packets of 12 and I certainly don t need more than 4 packets. I have 6 packets available at 5-40 each. Anybody interested? Contact Tony Finlayson at t r.finlayson@ntlworld.com lix
