1 WOLLONGONG CAMPUS CURRENT PROJECTS SMART (Simulation, Modelling and Analysis for Research and Teaching) Infrastructure is one of the largest infrastructure research facilities in the world. The four-storey, 12,000m² building is designed to accommodate large scale research teams, including 200 higher degree research students. SMART s funding comprises $35 million through the Federal Government s Education Investment Fund, $17 million from UOW and $10 million from the NSW Government through RailCorp. SMART is designed to encourage collaboration in academia, government, research organisations and industry. It plays a key role in attracting, retaining and developing high quality infrastructure researchers to the University. It also has excellent seminar and small conference facilities for industry, government and visiting scholars to use. It consists of 30 specialist research and education laboratories that focus on a wide range of infrastructure services such as electricity, energy, water, gas, transport, rail and road. The facility has recently won a hotly-contested Master Builders Australia (MBA) Excellence in Construction Award for tertiary buildings in the $20-50 million range. The award follows a recent Institute of Architects commendation, with judges commenting that the SMART Facility sits comfortably in the Wollongong campus and was an outstanding example of the incorporation of Ecologically Sustainable Design principles. 2 Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) The first stage of IHMRI s headquarters on the University of Wollongong campus was completed in July Built over four levels, the facilities feature international standard PC2 and PC3 medical research laboratories, a dedicated clinical research and trials centre and a modern lecture theatre. The 1500m² clinical research and trials area incorporates exercise and aerobic testing areas, nine consulting rooms, blood collection laboratory, food preparation facilities, dialysis/treatment chairs and a DEXA body composition facility. Stage one of the project has been jointly funded by the University of Wollongong and the NSW Government. The Hope Theatre was originally constructed in 1991 as a combined lecture theatre and performance space and was configured to seat 435 in a tiered arrangement.

3 The Hope Theatre was originally constructed in 1991 as a combined lecture theatre and performance space and was configured to seat 435 in a tiered arrangement. In 2008, it was decided to end its use as a performance venue and the proscenium arch was filled in during the Christmas vacation break. Construction was completed early in 2010 for the commencement of the 2010 academic year. This project entailed the removal of the rear projection room and its replacement with a further three tiered rows of seats, increasing the capacity to 539. The theatre s access provisions were improved by the removal of the elevated stage area, and enhanced data projection and audio systems were also included. A new suspended fabric ceiling was installed and the air-conditioning system was replaced. The Hope Theatre is now computer-friendly, with power outlets built in to the new seats to provide laptop recharging throughout the auditorium. Wireless networking is also a feature of both the theatre and its foyer, which has been reconfigured to provide informal study facilities for 32 students. At the same time, work was carried out on the conversion of the now-redundant stage and dressing room areas to rehearsal, audio production, scenery workshop and art studio spaces for the Faculty of Creative Arts. The project includes the construction of a new floor within the existing stage fly-tower void and the installation of a lift to provide disabled access. General Teaching Building 24 Completed in January 2011, the new $6.25 million General Teaching Building consists of three levels, with 2160m² of floor space providing 12 new teaching spaces.

Also incorporated is the new Language Centre in Building 19 which provides two 24 seat language laboratories, a student study area and academic staff offices. A bicycle store, locker room and change facilities have also been provided for the use of students and staff. Stored water can also be used to top up the McKinnon stream water feature. There is provision for the storage tank to be connected with other tanks to add to the overall capacity of the campus. A new stage, BBQ and seating area was also built with improved disabled access. The Building 67 ground floor terrace area has had new seating and shade structures added to improve student access and amenity. CCTV has also been installed in this area. Stage two consists of a roof to the new Building 36 Terrace. Photovoltaic cells are incorporated on the roof structure and the electricity generated will be used in Building 36. 6 Unicentre Redevelopment During 2010 the central portion of Building 11 was refurbished for the UniCentre. Works took place over two floors at a cost of $6.8 million. This major building upgrade and refresh provides attractive new recreation spaces with additional retail and food options for the campus community. The refreshed space includes new food and beverage outlets, an atrium covered food court, a student lounge, with leisure reading spaces, informal and formal meeting areas, interactive games areas and a multi-use exhibition space. New Third Entry Open for use for the 2010 academic year, this new entry provides an alternative entry and exit through the Western Carpark (P4) onto Robsons Road. This has significantly improved traffic movements around campus, particularly during the morning and afternoon peak times. Student Accommodation A new 360 bed student accommodation building has started construction in 2011 near the existing Kooloobong accommodation at the western end of campus. The $42 million project will significantly increase the number of students able to be housed on the Wollongong campus. Completion is expected early in The project will include a number of green initiatives including rainwater harvesting, energy and water efficient fittings and sustainable construction techniques. 7 Other Projects: Building 19 Refurbishment - which includes back log maintenance, code compliance and functional upgrades. Building 41 Science Deanery, Nursing Simulation Laboratories and Offices - due for completion early Extension to Building 320 Batemans Bay - a collaboration between UOW, TAFE and Eurobodalla Shire Council. Due for occupation and use for the 2012 academic year. Housing for the Graduate School of Medicine - a five-bedroom house in Mudgee and five four-bedroom townhouses in Bowral. Completion of Enterprise-1 and the Australian Institute for Innovative Materials Processing and Devices (AIIM P&D) in 2011 encouraged development of synergies between tenants, established close links with the University s research institutes, advancement in technology and further funding. A highlight of May 2011 was the Innovation Campus being named Best Business & Industrial Park Development in Australia at the Property Council of Australia Innovation and Excellence Awards. The opening of Lacuna Cafe within ic Central, has also provided improved choice and service to the ic community. 11 MIKE CODD BUILDING In January 2010, construction of the fourth building, the new home of the University s Sydney Business School and Digital Media Centre was completed. The University of Wollongong recognised former Chancellor Dr Michael Codd s contribution of over 12 years, when they named the building in his honour. 12 ic ENTERPRISE - 1 April 2011 saw the completion of the fifth building on Innovation Campus, ic Enterprise-1. It is home to Australian Health Services Research Institute (AHSRI), BHP Billiton Illawarra Coal, CommScope, Tickets.com, NSW Cancer Council and MphasiS. Enterprise-1 was also recognised for excellence being on the winners list in the Commercial Buildings Category ($20 million to $50 million) of the NSW Master Builders Association Excellence in Construction Awards.
