3 You Spoke We Listened Thanks to everyone who took the time to tell us where you wanted to ski this coming season by completing the online survey. Banff was the #1 destination, followed closely by Big Sky and Beaver Creek. I was surprised that Big Sky ranked so high, since we just went there last January. But as a result of the survey, a trip has been scheduled to Big Sky again this season. **Red Alert ** Red Alert** Prices are going sky high. Even with group pricing we are seeing a steep increase in the quotes we are receiving. Although we strive to keep club trips priced below $1500, this year there may be several that are above that. We will continue to work with our tour operator and if possible find lower rates. But at this time start saving your pennies. High airfares and availability have made this year s trip planning very challenging. As we all know, consolidation in the airline industry has resulted in increased prices and fewer seats. The best values are in January, but the survey said you prefer to ski in February and March. Prices go up considerably, especially in March. However, we have scheduled what the membership requested. I hope you will support our trips! Our board has decided to sponsor six trips this season five western U.S. and one European. We have selected the 5 western locations based on the survey. These are Banff, Beaver Creek, Big Sky, Steamboat and Winter Park. The European trip is to Madonna di Campiglio; we just finalized it. Trips confirmed as of press time are: January 24-31: Banff Alberta Canada - $1315 February 7-14: Steamboat Colorado - $1507 February 14-21: Winter Park Colorado - $1330 February 28 March 7: Beaver Creek Colorado - $1525 March 7-15 European trip to Madonna di Campiglio Italy $2598 February 28 - March 8 pre-trip extension to Cortina Italy. $1193 March 28 April 4 Big Sky Montana - $1527/$1751 Telluride has been voted among the top destinations for the past several years. A lot of effort was put into trying to get a trip there this year, but it just didn t work out. Air was $700+ and lodging was also an issue. The trip would have been almost $1800. Therefore, the next destination with the most votes was Winter Park; and that s where we re going... for $400+ less than Telluride! With the hot summer weather, it is difficult to think about ski trips. However, it is important to give next ski season some thought right away. The picnic on August 16 at the Indianapolis Sailing Club is your first opportunity to sign up for trips. We are offering 188 spaces this year. Getting additional air seats at our current prices will be difficult, so you need to think about where you want to ski and sign up early to assure you go where you want to. A few trips sold out at the picnic last year, so if there s a trip on your bucket list, you will want to be sure to attend the picnic and get signed up. Have a great summer, but also THINK SNOW! Jean Ballinger, VP Trips
4 Penrod 2009 ISC GOES TO PENROD 9/6 The Penrod Art Fair on Saturday, September 6th is billed as Indiana s Nicest Day. The one-day art fair covers the grounds of the Indianapolis Art Museum and features juried arts and crafts, multiple music stages, ballet, and an excellent array of refreshments (including adult beverages for those who indulge!). Several local wineries and breweries bring their products. The Ski Club has applied for a booth at this year s Penrod Fair to showcase our contribution to the Indianapolis community. Our relationship to art? We go to gorgeous places, we take lots of pictures, and we engage in a visually thrilling sport. It will to take a lot of volunteers to make this work. We need volunteers to work at the booth in two-hour shifts to talk to passer-bys about the benefits of skiing and, of course, membership in the ISC. We also will need volunteers to help us set up and tear down our booth. Show your club spirit and help us promote skiing in Indiana at the Penrod Art Fair. To volunteer, Lisa Sindelar at danasin2@yahoo.com by August 1. If you can t volunteer but plan to attend, wear your Indy Ski Club apparel and please stop by to see your club friends at the booth. It will be a great gathering point for those who like to socialize. We ve asked for a spot near the refreshments, so it will be a great place to relax and talk. With the Indianapolis Ski Club there, it truly will be Indiana s Nicest Day! (Penrod info is at

It is Saturday August 16 th at the Indianapolis Sailing Club bring your appetite for BBQ and your checkbook for writing that deposit to secure your spot on one or many trips! 6 The Brickyard Vintage Racing Invitational June 6-8, 2014 Here s ski club member Elzbieta Wojciechowska sitting in a 1909 Alco (American Locomotive Company) race car that ran in the very first Indy 500 in It's known as the "Black Beast". We had about a dozen ski club members there enjoying the day. - Ray Battey WELCOME NEW MEMBERS No new members this month, but after September 1 YOU MAY NOT BE ON THE MEMBER ROSTER Renew now!! Biking Riding the Monon Rail trails are getting popular all over the country and Indiana is no exception. Our ski club group, the Monon Riders, is riding every other week or so with seven rides taken so far. A lot of members have come out and enjoyed the rides which are not strenuous and are designed for the average weekend rider. Trips have run about 15 to 20 miles and we plan to go a little farther as the summer and fall progress. We ride in the morning and often meet for lunch afterwards. We always ride on trails, not roads. While we have ridden a variety of trails, including the Monon, we plan on adding a few new ones as we progress. If you are interested, Ray Battey to be added to the contact list (rsbattey@aol.com ). Historically there has been another biking group coordinated by Suzie Carlson with rides being hosted from different homes or designated meeting spots. These rides may still be occasionally scheduled so if you aren't already on Suzie's list, please her to be included on these special rides. (suzsold@aol.com)

If you did, I trust you did not freak out or get an ulcer worrying about it. The official reason is that it has taken a while to assemble all the trip details for next season. Jean has been working hard on the arrangements, and I hope that you will sign up EARLY for your favorite trips! (If you voted for a trip please do sign up for it. And yes you can plan on another free wine/ beer session at our house in Big Sky). The unofficial reason the Boomer is late? We just said goodbye to 28 members of Cathy s family who came here for their annual Family Reunion!!!! A week of whitewater rafting, zip-lining, horseback riding, golf, hiking, bear and moose and elk stalking, herding kids, big family meals and the associated barbecuing, and 29 people all talking at once, even during their yearly Scrabble free-for-all. and how many trips to Yellowstone!!!
