The Indianapolis Sailing Club s facility was perfect for our function and weather cooperated. Trip sign ups were open for 8 trips, and the Big Sky trip sold out with a wait list, but has been expanded and now has spaces. The Europe trip to Andorra is about 75% sold and all others are about half sold. Your best chance to get the trip of your choice is to attend the Sept. 8 meeting at the Adams Mark Hotel at the airport, or contact the Trip Leader or me. Our Trip Leaders are excited about their trips and are working on activities for their groups to make the trips even more enjoyable. Watch our WEB Site for the latest on each trip. ( EUROPE Word on the Andorra trip is that all OVSC clubs are rapidly selling their spaces and are looking for more. We used to be able to swap spaces with other clubs when we oversold, but that may not be the situation this year. Space is available now, so sign up now. HIDDEN GEM - For the more studious financial people and others who pay attention to cost per ski day, take a close look at Winter Park, since it s the bargain. WP is a short bus ride from Denver with a vast mountain, slope side lodging, and 4 full days of skiing. You should have the mountain to yourself since we ll depart the area 2 days before the Denver day trippers arrive for Presidents Weekend. DO IT NOW Since I last did this job 6 years ago, I have learned that it is far more difficult to add space to a trip for last minute signups. The airlines are now a big bottleneck trying to get more seats, since our special priced seats are limited just like frequent flyer mile seats. Often lodging can be an issue...who wants to stay in some adjacent property away from their Club friends and what s going on? The new ski year has begun, and although its warm, sunny and skiing is 5 months away do not wait. The September meeting will be a great chance to meet your old friends, check out our trips, and enjoy the entertainment at the Adams Mark near the airport. See you there! Roger March WHISTLER B.C. 3 The President s Review By Martha Heinrich We are off to a great start this season, after our first meeting of the ski club year. Our picnic on August 13 at the Geist Sailing Club had a record turnout of 100 people. It was great to see so many familiar faces and some new ones too, after the past few months with no meetings. Perhaps it was the free meal or perhaps it was a chance to get a jump on signing up for a trip, but whatever the reason, the large turnout made for an outstanding event with plenty to eat and lots to talk about. I d like to say a BIG THANK YOU again to the picnic committee, which consisted of Kitty Curran, Joan Naffziger, Sue McNiel, Georgie McCarty, Roger Reeves, Bryan Smith, Tom Miller, and Joyce Ballinger. Having so many helpers made everything go smoothly and hopefully no one was overloaded. A Thank You also goes to Rusted Moon Outfitters, Dick s Sporting Goods, and Retired Guy s Maintenance (Tom Miller) for donations of door prizes. Trip signups will open again at our September meeting. Even if you signed up in August, don t let that keep you away from our September get-together. We are at a new Indy Ski Club GOLF SCRAMBLE and BBQ Saturday September 17 Valle Vista Golf Club, Greenwood (775 E. Main Street just east of I-65 exit) $55 ($65 non-members) includes Green fees, cart, food. Registration at 12:15 pm, tee off at 1. SCRAMBLE means you don t have to be good at golf, just willing to give it a try. All Indy Ski Club members (including non-golfers) are invited to a massive burger buffet at 6 pm (cost $10). Adult beverages extra. Sign up alone or with a foursome, with a check payable to Indianapolis Ski Club be sure to pre-pay for the buffet as well. Again, we will have all the trip materials for preview, cash bar, socializing, and maybe some dancing. Be sure to congratulate Mel Crichton on his winning the Bergie Award for this past year. This annual award is given to a Club Member who has served the Club above and beyond the call of duty. Mel is a second time winner and there is no one more deserving of this than him. We are now accepting classified ads for sale of ski/ snowboard sports equipment by our members. A two line ad is free of charge, so if you still have some good used equipment in your basement, it might be useful to someone else. Contact Mel at kj9c@iquest.net. Last of all, be sure to read the article in the Boomer that updates you on some recent website enhancements. We ve waited a long time to be able to join or renew memberships online, and we now have that capability. Also, the web always has the latest activities and announcements that develop between Boomers. so check the website periodically to keep up to date. Also, Bob told Jerry that we lost another former member. Marshall McCuen passed away on August 19. Marshall also was active during the first years of the club and was founder of the Schussboomer.
