1 July-August 2015 NEWS FOR SKIERS AND SNOWBOARDERS Volume 55, No. 4 Inside: 2016 TRIPS! Join us for Thursday Thirsts and other great social activities. More info inside.
2 IN THIS ISSUE. PICNIC and TRIPS signup info Summer social slate The rest of Randy s Italy travelogue 2016 trips schedule MEMBERSHIP FORM - fill it out today! View from the Sky Mel Crichton, Boomer editor OK, I give in. The wretched humidity these last few weeks has finally gotten to me. Sure it was great to see so many club members at Thursday Thirsts and on bike rides, and we saw even a few more at Italian Fest. But Ma Nature wins! We are packing up the dogs and golf clubs and heading back to Montana. Of course, as I write this it s almost 90 degrees in Big Sky, but that much heat is unusual. Our bigger concern is the lack of precipitation that still plagues the West, and we are not immune. So maybe instead of humidity and mosquitoes we ll get wild fires and ash clouds. Better keep the garden hose handy. See you at Penrod. Office: Fax: Tom: Priscilla: Picnic Concert ~~ SATURDAY July 11, 5-9pm Join Indy Ski Club for an evening of music and wine on the lawn! Or enlarging on screen. but this time the board had little to say. Note this as a rare incidence!!! So I had extra space. Fortunately we do have some material, and in the future maybe we can introduce more new members (and possibly catch up with some older ones). So here s one of our newest members, Ewa Papiez.. I just signed up to join ski club. I am past age 60, working in the Radiation Cancer Center at IU Health Bloomington as a radiation physicist. I am married; unfortunately my husband can not join me on any adventure or outing. I have 2 kids and 3 grandchildren. I love sailing (my sailboat sits in Four Winds Marina on Monroe Lake). I have one black cat. I like to travel, dance, listen to classical music, watch TV programs on travel and history and read non-fiction books. I do fair bit of gardening, trying to tame the woods surrounding my house in Mooresville. I regularly ski at Copper mountain; we own two timeshare weeks in Dillon Colorado. I would love to go on a trip to Alps sometime in the near future. I do not have a particular favorite food, but I always try to cook something new. I am a board member of Polish Cultural Society of Indiana. I always can be contacted on my cell (it is still a Texas cell). Regards Ewa Thanks for sharing Ewa if you d like to see a bio or perhaps add your own, please contact the SchussBoomer editor at kj9c@iquest.net

6 Remembering Italy.2015: Cortina d Ampezzo and Madonna di Campiglio Part TWO (Editor s note Last month we were able to print only the first half of Randy's epic tome. Dostoyevsky didn t write so much in War and Peace! But we left you with a cliff hanger. Does anybody get arrested? Does anybody get Mussolini s Revenge as they eat exotic food in an exotic location? Is anybody injured? Read on, if you dare) Any advanced skier with two good legs and lots of stamina should ski the Sella Ronda. It s a 42 kilometer (only 26 miles ) route that circumscribes the Sella Massif mountain range. It can be skied either clockwise or counter. On one day the guys from Dayton skied the route and 85 mph winds blew a tree onto a gondola cable at Val Gardena. The gondola was closed and 160 skiers had to be airlifted out of the gondolas! Somehow the Dayton guys bypassed that mess and other closed lifts and finished the route. All this made international news. We wisely chose another day when it was sunny and mild to ski the Sella Ronda. We took an 8 am bus to Corvara and began the clockwise route. Corvara is where our 2010 attempt at the Sella Ronda ended short of completion due to poor time management on the part of the tour guide who had charged us $ 100 each. Thanks again Gabrielle. This time our day went better. We stayed on schedule and completed about two-thirds of the route before lunch at a self-service restaurant at Rifugio Comici. However the lunch line was slow, and we spent way too much time there. Then, there was a place trail you could go two different ways. We got on an icy black run and took the long way around it. We then missed the final gondola back to Corvara, and had to take an extra chairlift. By then we were going to be late. By radio, we spoke to Carol Woodward, who schmoozed the bus driver in Italian into waiting cinque minuti. Joe Deppen sprinted uphill in his ski boots to the bus to announce our arrival. Oh well, every grand adventure needs a little drama, right? Our final night in Cortina the wait staff had a birthday surprise for Carol. After dinner the lights in the dining room went down and they brought a birthday cake with sparklers lit. Carol was very surprised and the celebration capped a great week in Cortina. On Sunday we transferred by bus to Madonna di Campiglio and eight more Indy members flew to Milan and met up with 12 others from the OVSC. They also traveled by bus to the Hotel Club Relais des Alpes in the early afternoon. The hotel manager Giovanni rolled out the red carpet for us with a very nice welcome reception with wine, beer, cheese, and nuts. We had an orientation of the area and met the other OVSC people. A buffet inner followed aasit did every night that week. We were the only Americans staying at the hotel. The other hotel guests were mostly Italian families. The hotel has been in business since the late 1800 s. The original part of the hotel is where the dining room is located presently. Above the dining room is the Grand Hall with a stage and seating for entertainment. Every evening after dinner, the staff had a sing and dance-along for the young Italian kids in the Grand Hall. One evening Carol Woodward was volunteered to join the kids in a line dance. Brava Carolina! The hotel is located near Piazza Righi, the center of Madonna di Campiglio. The Piazza is a popular place in sit at an outside café, soak up the sun and enjoy an après ski drink. It s easy to walk from the hotel to either the Cinque Laghi gondola or the Spinale gondola to access the skiing. From Cinque Laghi you can catch the 2.8 mile gondola at Patacoss to Pinzolo to the south. You could also ski the Tre slalom race hill, where the World Cup circuit holds a men s night slalom race in December. There is a stadium finish at the bottom of the course right at the edge of town. Some highlights of Pinzolo are the Doss del Sabion restaurant at the top of the mountain, the up-close views of the westernmost Dolomite Mountains, and the steep Tulot ski run that takes you to the bottom of the ski area. You can also take the Spinale gondola up the mountains east of town. At the top you can stop at the Chalet Fiat restaurant for food, views, or sunning. From Spinale you gain access to Passo Groste at the highest altitude of the area with the best snow, even late into the season. Near the top of Groste is the Ristorante Stoppani, a new and very expensive restaurant, with a popular sundeck. Another route from Spinale will take you to Ristorante Montagnoli. One evening our package included a snow coach trip up the mountain to the restaurant for dinner featuring traditional regional. And lucky for us, we got a trip back down the mountain in the snow coaches. From another lift from town, the Pradalago express gondola, you can ski to the north to Marilleva, known for its Soviet-inspired hotels perched on the side of the mountain overlooking the Val di Sole. You can also ski to Folgarida with an awesome (steep) piste called Nera Folgarida. It s another downhill quality pitch that s a challenge to ski from top to bottom without stopping. At the end of the day, skiing back from the Forcini base and bridge north of town you can choose from two interesting trails. One trail on the east of the bridge is known as Grotte, like a tunnel of trees that winds its way to town, and you can sneak down beside the Bambi lift and come out right near our hotel. The other route is the Belvedere run that falls and rises, winding its way under the road and ending at the Belvedere t-bar at Piazza Brenta Alta just a block from our hotel. One evening after dinner a few of us found our way to the hotel bar for Italian Karaoke. After a little encouragement from the Italians, we got our best crooner, Joe Deppen, to take the microphone. Joe did great, even though their song versions are nothing like the originals we all know. We wound up the week at Madonna di Campiglio we had another birthday to celebrate. At dinner, our host Giovanni, surprised Eldonna Rees with a huge birthday cake and a magnum of champagne. The cake was so large that the 32 of us in our combined group could only eat about a third of it. And the champagne bottle was almost the size of Eldonna! On Saturday morning, we travelled to Milan, arriving early enough to explore downtown Milan and visited the Duomo, the Galleria, and the Sforza Castle. Early the following morning, it was off to the airport for our flight home and to reality. Ciao 4 now, Randiamo Ridgway, trip leader
7 Ski Club Bikers by Ray Battey Most Saturday mornings you can find our bicycle group somewhere on a rail trail or bicycle path enjoying a ride. Recently we met at the Brew Pub on the Monon in Broad Ripple (see picture) and rode north to 106 th Street, taking the 106 th Street trail over to Hazel Dell. We rode north on the Hazel Dell trail to a Starbucks just south of 146 th Street. We put in 23 miles round trip and some of us met at The Last Shot for beers and lunch at the completion of the ride. Upcoming rides are planned for downtown, the Cardinal Greenway and the Pleasant Run Greenway. me if you would like to be added to the list.
