7 21.0 Tourism plays a key role in the economic development of the State. The number of tourists visiting Kashmir valley has shown a persistent increase upto nineteen eighties. The flow of tourists decreased because of turmoil particularly in 1990's. The Jammu and Kashmir State has a tremendous potential for developing tourism. The slopes available at sonamarg, pahalgam and gulmarg provide scope for development of winter tourism. Bestowed with rich scenic beauty, the snow capped forests in winter draw a great chunk of Tourists from all over the world to gulmarg the high attitude tourist resort in Kahsmir valley. The ride of cable care corporation (Gondola) has always been a special attraction for tourists. During winter gulmarg becomes cynosure of all eyes as snow capped mountains surrounding this high altitude health resort add to its picturesque. The State Govt. too is devoting full attention for developing sufficient infrastructure to boost the tourist trade in the state. Tourism has a multiplier effect on income, employment generation and gives tremendous fillip to the economy. Looking towards the importance of tourism the Govt. is bringing tourism on rails by making all the tourist resorts more attractive to the tourists. The revival of tourist trade can be assessed by the increasing number of tourists both Indian and non-indian to the State The state has three distinct niches, while leisure tourism is available in Kashmir valley, pilgrim in Jammu and ladakh has the potential to offer adventure tourism The tables in this chapter present data on the number of tourists visiting various tourist resorts. Table No provides data on the number of both domestic and foreign tourists coming to Kashmir valley whose number has been posted by tourism department in the neighbourhood of 1168 thousand during Table No of this chapter presents data on the number of foreign tourists coming to Kashmir valley by their nationality. During the year 2014, thousand foreign tourists were recorded to have visited Kashmirvalley The number of devotees coming to Mata Vaishno Devi and Amar Nath Holy Cave are shown in table No While the number of devotees at Mata Vaishno Devi Asthapan was lakhs, pilgrims toamarnath cave were recorded at 3.73 lakhs during the year In this section two new tables have been added which give latest information on the number of tourist huts/bungalows and Tourist Hotels and Restaurants.
