As a citizen of the United States of America it is important to understand how our government works and how we as citizens can have an impact on it. Our government depends on people who are willing to actively participate in the process. The privilege of being a citizen carries the responsibility of involvement. As a citizen you have many opportunities to share your ideas and make changes for the better in your community, state, and nation. At our last meeting the Tenderhearts and Explorers looked a little deeper into our local community as they began work on the Citizenship and Government Badge. Working in units, the Tenderhearts created a book about their community. The Explorers learned more about their community and create a poster to encourage citizens to vote. The Pioneers used this time to complete the CPR certifica- tion they began working on during the summer. Inside this issue: Service Opportunities Rocky River Assistance Program Service 2 2 New Wheels! 2 This weeks meeting... This week the troop will break out into units and work separately. The Tenderheart and Explorer scouts will complete the Citizenship and Government Badge. The Tenderhearts, using a local map will locate important places in the community (ie. church, school, library, fire station, police station). The Explorers will learn how a bill is written, is passed in Congress and becomes a law and talk about the difference between the three branches of government and their respective functions. To finish the Emergency Preparation Badge, the Pioneers will practice self-defense with our resident Black Belt, Barry Gluntz. He intended to chart a western sea route to China, India and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia; The origins of Columbus Day instead, he landed in the Bahamas, becoming the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings set up colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland during the 10th century. Later that month, Columbus sighted Cuba and believed it was mainland China; in December the expedition found Hispaniola, which he though might be Japan. There, he established Spain's first colony in the Amer- icas with 39 of his men. In March 1493, the explorer returned to Spain in triumph, bearing gold and spices. He crossed the Atlantic several more times before his death in 1506; by his third journey, he realized that he hadn't reached Asia but instead had stumbled upon a continent previously unknown to Europeans. Operation Christmas Child North Olmsted Friends Church Columbia Rd Nov. 3 Time -TBA Packing Party Come and stay for the whole party, stop by for a short while, or fill a few box and leave whatever works best for your schedule. OCC is always collecting supplies to help fill boxes: crayons, toothpaste, toothbrush, socks, soap, wash clothes, hard candy, small toys, etc. Can t come on Nov. 3r, that s OK. Pack your own shoebox and bring it to the Nov. 1st meeting and we will deliver it for you. Before every meeting beginning at 6pm Jen Schuett, troop Service Coordinator, will have a craft available for whomever can come and help. Earn service hrs. -(30 min.). Donation of craft items appreciated: stickers, markers, etc. Food Pantry Location The Beach Education Center is located at 1101 Morewood Parkway (corner of Morewood, Erie, and Detroit Rd) in Rocky River. Park in back (the entrance is on Detroit) and the food room is in the gym. Rocky River Assistance Program (RRAP) Service The RRAP is an established community resource for residents in need of food, clothing, cleaning supplies, personal care items and household items. The RRAP s primary goal is to provide the program s clients with two weeks worth of food every other month. In September, six girls from the Rainbow Frogs patrol helped pack bags for over 30 families in need all within one hour. It was a real eye opening experience. Who knew there are that many families in need right here in Rocky River. The work included unpacking the food dropped off for distribution, sorting it into bins, counting the items and filling bags. Its amazing how many people give and how many are in need. God always manages to provide just the right amount. The RRAP was very grateful for our help. During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season the RRSP are always in need of more help. More food will be distributed to a greater number of families. Our troop is scheduled to help on Nov.13 and Dec. 18. Everyone is welcome. Many hands make light work. Thank you to everyone who came to help in September. It was a great experience helping people right here in Rocky River. Attention Campers! At Thursdays meeting, please return clean mess kits used on this weekends campout. Look, we have new wheels! After years of searching and handwringing (and a collapsed trailer!) we have finally landed a trailer for the troop. Thank you to Todd Cipollo who not only worked the deal to get the trailer through his clients, but donated the trailer in the end. God has truly provided for us. It is amazing to see how he works! The trailer will be tagged as a St. Thomas Trailer, and will be shared with the boy scouts, but AHG will have priority. It worked great on the campout this week and we look forward to many more! We would have spent $80 on a trailer this weekend and every campout going forward, so this is a great money saver as well. Thanks Todd!!

3 Volume 6, Issue 3 Page 3 Fall Camping Camp Manatoc What a beautiful weekend experiencing nature, enjoying the company of old and new friends, and creating memories of a great campout for Troop 1206! Perfect weather! Lots of fun! New Trailer! And... a big Thank You to Amy Madachik for putting the whole troop on her back and carrying it! With a mix of cabin and tent camping the troop spent two nights at the BSA Camp Manatoc in Peninsula. Taking full advantage of the beautiful surroundings of the campsite, the scouts used the BB gun range on Saturday morning to practice their target shooting. We found we have a couple great BB Gun Girls (who knew) and I was so proud of the few girls who may of felt like giving up, but kept trying and started hitting bulls eyes!, explained BB Gun range certified scoutmaster Barry Gluntz. The older campers also worked on their map skills and hiked the many trails of Camp Manatoc. It was a wonderful time. The 6 mile hike (originally planned for five miles) was incredible, said Barry. The terrain was rugged at times but everyone persevered and made it back to camp safely. Later in the evening the younger scouts had their opportunity to hike too. The troop chairman led the entire troop on a twilight hike traversing hills and valleys and crossing rivers, some on logs only as wide as the girl's feet. A perfect day for a perfect walk! Both evenings the girls ended the day with campfire skits and laughter. It s wonderful to see the creativity of our little actresses and the cohesiveness of the group. Truly, sitting around the campfire was a beautiful way to end the day. Thank you to all the parents that attended and helped with the campout, especially the new families who were very eager to help. This was our largest campout to date with over 50 campers. PLEASE return you mess kits on Thursday to the camping box in the scout room. Fall Campout Photo Gallery on page 5. Pioneer Fest at Rocky River Nature Center On a beautiful September 16th afternoon more than 10 scouts participated in the Pioneer Fest presented by the RRNC. The scouts had a fantastic time manning stations and demonstrating crafts, toys and games. tory and learned what life was like for early settlers. The program offered crafts, activities, food sampling, live music, pioneer toys and more. Some of the activities our girls demonstrated include: making yarn dolls, buzz saw toy and braiding rugs. Other girls demonstrated how to play Visitors to the Pioneer fest walked around a historic village and experienced hands on hispioneer toys and games made homemade apple butter, and showed off pioneer outfits. As a troop we served 47 total hrs. at the Pioneer Fest. Some girls served 2-3 hours while others spent the day sharing the history of Pioneer life with others.
