4 The purpose of the Akela Cub Campout program is to provide an opportunity for the Cub Scouts to obtain outdoor skills and have fun! As you and your Scout journey through the weekend's events you are going to experience what Scouting is about. Enjoy the beauty and wonder of nature where Scouting is intended to take place. You will be spending quality and quantity time together as a family so take pleasure in the time you spend together. You will have an opportunity to make new friends and strengthen the friendships that you already have. The Scouts will be offered challenging activities and skills courses, and new and rewarding experiences and adventures in a fun environment that will fuel an eagerness to learn. Help us make each Cub Scout's experience something they'll never forget! This guide is intended to serve as an introduction to those unfamiliar with the Cub Scout camping experience and as a reference and refresher for those who are camping veterans. Use this guidebook to prepare yourself, your Pack, and your Cub Scouts with important information about camp policies, safety guidelines and emergency procedure. Please take the time to "Be Prepared," and pass this information on to the other members of your Pack who plan to attend camp. Your understanding and cooperation with these procedures will help the Camp volunteers to make this an enjoyable and safe event for everyone. First, register your Scout and his Akela. Go to and sign up. The cost is $15 per Scout/parent or $25 per family (3 or more). Add $7.50 for an additional Scout. You can pay online or mail/deliver your payment to the Scout Office located at 855 Riverside Drive in Jackson. Did you know? The Akela Cub weekend is 100% volunteer run! That means the adults who are staffing all of the events are parents or guardians of the Scouts who are attending the event. If you can help run an event for even one hour, this will be incredibly helpful! All supplies and information for your volunteer position will be provided. We are also in need of Boy Scouts to help teach skills to the Cub Scouts. Please contact Todd Bridges mtbridges@umc.edu or Jan Switzer jswitzer77@hotmail.com for more information or to sign up to help. What do I need to do BEFORE coming to Camp Hood for Super Hero Scouts Weekend? There are three Super Hero Scout Weekend activities that require prior planning: Clark Kent Can Collection As a service project, we are asking each Scout to bring canned food items. This will be a competition to see which Pack can collect the most canned goods per Scout attending the campout. Fantastic Four-est Design Contest Each Pack should decorate the entrance to their campsite using the Super Hero Scout theme! Judging will be conducted by the Camp Committee and ribbons will be awarded. Before coming to camp, get together as a Pack and brainstorm the most creative, super design you can imagine. Let Elastigirl stretch your imagination! Bring all supplies with you and decorate Friday night and Saturday morning prior to the Opening Ceremony. Campfire Ceremony Participation Each Pack should prepare a song or skit to perform at the Campfire Ceremony on Saturday night. Keeping with the Super Hero Scout theme would be ideal, but is not required. Please submit your ideas prior to the event by ing Todd Bridges mtbridges@umc.edu or Jan Switzer at jswitzer77@hotmail.com.
5 What do I need to bring with me? You and your Pack are responsible for everything you will need while camping including food, tent, sleeping bag, cooking gear, etc. Check with your Pack to see if they will be coordinating any meals during the weekend. A comprehensive packing list suggestion can be found at What about medical forms? An updated BSA Annual Health and Medical Form is a must for every Scout on site. Make sure your Pack Leaders have a copy of this for your son. Sections A and B must be completed. You do NOT need a physician to complete these portions. Go here for a form: Where is Camp Warren Hood? Take I-55 to Exit 61 Hazlehurst, MS. Exit onto MS Highway 28 West. Proceed for 2.5 miles. Turn Right onto Old Port Gibson Road. Travel 9.3 miles to the sign for Hood Scout Reservation. Turn Right and follow the road into camp.
6 How and where do I check in? Check in will run Friday, October 11, from 5 pm to 8 pm and Saturday, October 12, from 7:30 am to 11 am. Once you are checked in, you will be given campsite assignments, schedules and other pertinent information. Each registered participant will receive an armband which must be worn for the entire weekend. As in recent years, each Pack will be allowed one vehicle with a trailer to transport gear from the parking lot to the campsite.. No other vehicles will be allowed at the campsites. What do I do once I ve set up camp? The District-sponsored events are scheduled for Saturday from 12pm to 5 pm followed by the Council Ring Campfire program at dusk. All other time will be free time for Scouts to enjoy nature, decorate the campsite entrance, and complete projects at the Den and Pack levels. Will there be a campsite inspection? Yes, all campsites will be inspected by Camp Staff. Please see the attached Campsite Inspection Checklist to insure all expectations are being met. What clothes do we need to wear? The Scout s uniform for Saturday s activities will be Class B and comfortable, closed toe shoes. During the Campfire Ceremony on Saturday night and the worship service on Sunday morning, please wear the Class A uniform. Anyone else attending should make sure he/she is wearing attire that is appropriate for a Scouting event. Make sure you check the weather and come prepared! What are the behavior expectations? Parents are responsible for the behavior of their youth at all times. Follow the Scout Oath and Law at all times. Scout Oath: On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. Scout Law: A Scout it trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. NEW! Additional range times are available! In order to help decrease the wait times for the BB gun and archery ranges, we will be opening the ranges on Saturday morning from 9 am 11 am for anyone who is in camp and wants to take advantage of shorter lines. The ranges will reopen after the Opening Ceremony with all other scheduled activities. What do we need to do before the Opening Ceremony? Plan to arrive at the Flagpole by 11:50 am. Make sure everyone has had lunch prior to leaving camp. Check to make sure you have all gear that will be needed until you return to your campsite after the flag lowering (around 5 pm). Ensure that everyone has a snack and plenty of water to drink throughout the day. There will be many activities throughout the day and you don t want to miss any of them due to having to go back to your campsite because something was left behind. Plan ahead! When/where will the Opening Ceremony occur? The Opening Ceremony will be held on the Parade Field directly across from the Dining Hall at 12:00 pm. During the Opening Ceremony, encourage all Scouts to stand at attention (quiet and still) while saluting the flag. I m a Pack leader. What do I need to get after the Opening Ceremony? One person from each Pack needs to see Todd Bridges and/or Jan Switzer to receive a copy of the Super Hero Scavenger Hunt form and sign out one of the Spiderman Knot Tying boards. Both of these items must be returned at the Flag Lowering Ceremony at 5:00 pm. What activities can my Scout expect? All District-sponsored events will be offered from around 12:30 pm until 4:30 pm. Scouts will enjoy Superman s Faster than a Speeding Bullet BB Range, Hawkeye s Archery Range, Spiderman s Knot Tying, Wolverine s Animal Tracks Craft, Flash s First Aid Course/Webelos Readyman Activity Badge Course, Human Torch s Fire Building Demonstration and Fire Safety, Batman s Belt Loops, Incredible Hulk s Strength Training Academy, Super Hero Scavenger Hunt Hike, and Bruce Banner s Leave No Trace Banners! When do activities end? By 4:50 pm, meet back at the flagpole for the Flag Lowering Ceremony. Make sure all canned goods, knot tying boards and scavenger hunt sheets have been turned in by then. Enjoy free time and dinner at your campsite until the Campfire Ceremony begins at dusk.
7 What happens at the Campfire Ceremony? Each Pack will be presenting a song or skit at the Campfire Ceremony. If possible, please come up with a skit that somehow involves the Super Hero Scout theme. Please remember that you need to submit your idea to Todd Bridges- mtbridges@umc.edu or Jan Switzer jswitzer77@hotmail.com prior to the Akela Cub weekend. All of the weekend s awards will also be presented at this time. What about Sunday? We will be acknowledging our Duty to God and will be holding an outdoor worship service on Sunday morning beginning at 8:30 am at the Council Ring. Come worship with others in the beautiful outdoors. Head back to your campsite and start packing up. Everyone must be out of Camp Hood by 12:00 pm on Sunday. How do we have to leave our campsite? Of course, as Scouts, you will Leave No Trace in your campsite. We ask that everyone works together to tidy up the bathroom facilities before leaving on Sunday. As the saying goes, leave it better than you found it! What do I do in case of an emergency? There will be a medical officer on staff at camp. The First Aid Shack is located next to the Dining Hall near the Flagpole. It is advisable for each Pack to have their own fully stocked First Aid kit. This should be well identified and located in a central location. What does the non-stop bell ringing mean? If you hear the bell near the Dining Hall ringing non-stop, then there is some sort of emergency. Immediately gather everyone and move to the Flag Pole/Dining Hall area. What are the general camp rules for the entire weekend? Two-Deep Leadership is required at all times. No adult should be alone with a child who is not his/her own. In accordance with BSA policy, no Scout may share a tent with an adult who is not his/her parent or guardian. Scouts may share tents with each other. Practice Leave No Trace throughout the entire weekend. Please remind all Cub Scouts and all new Akelas what this means. Each Pack is responsible for cleaning up their campsite prior to check out. Take all trash with you! Use the Buddy System at all times. No child should be seen by himself/herself. Parents are responsible for their own children s safety and behavior at all times. Campfires are allowed in the provided fire rings ONLY. o The campfire must be attended by an adult at all times. o Use only wood and sticks that are already on the ground. Cutting down trees for firewood is not permitted. o Have a bucket of water nearby for emergencies and to extinguish the fire. o Make sure all Scouts stay at least three feet away from the fire unless they have to get closer to cook something. o What goes in the fire, stays in the fire. Don t put a stick in the fire and take it back out. o When you leave, the fire should be dead out. Feel above the fire with the back of your hand. If you feel heat, it isn t all the way out. The universal indicator of a dead fire is a stick stuck up in the middle of the dead fire. Keep all food stored properly in tightly closed containers. Remember, you are staying in woods that happen to house critters. As generous as it may seem, please don t share your food with them. Do not allow Scouts to climb or hang from the metal frames in the campsites. Alcohol is strictly prohibited at camp. Smoking is allowed only out of sight of all Scouts.
