They gathered through the cooperation of STORM (Save the Oak Ridges Moraine), the Metropolitan Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and Hike Ontario and developed the idea of a system of public recreational trails along the full length of the Moraine. They then formed The Oak Ridges Trail eering Committee which evolved into the Oak Ridges Trail Association (ORTA) in The main objective of the Association is to develop and secure the Oak Ridges Trail,...thereby promoting an appreciation and respect for the Moraine s ecological, cultural and scenic integrity, with the aim of retaining a trail corridor in its natural state. - Oak Ridges Trail Guidebook 1997 * Numbered bullets refer to corresponding pages with more detail of the Oak Ridges Trail. Land of the Holland River Valley was once cultivated by generations of farmers. As the Town of Aurora grew, surrounding lands were developed and the valley corridor was conveyed to the Town as open space. The corridor now provides a natural valleyland setting of mixed lowland forests, expansive meadows and wetland habitats. The trail passes through the Aurora Community Arboretum and Lambert Wilson ark, and links with the Oak Ridges Trail and Sheppard s Bush Conservation Area. In the year 2000, the Holland River Valley Trail was officially designated as Aurora s section of the Nokiidaa Trail. 14 Trail Use: Walking, Biking Trail Difficulty: Easy Approx Distance: 4 km For More Information: Town of Aurora, arks Division Yonge Burgon Old Craddock ark Valhalla Crt Spruce Maple Yonge Town ark ittypat Crt Mark Catherine Wells N Wells l Batson Odi n Oak Crt Mosley Atkinson ark Twelve O ak s Raiford Hollingshead Moorcrest C Centre Larmont B uchanan loss Avo n d ale Cedar Birch Walton Berczy John's Sdrd S q Crt Scanlon Attridge Industrial Crt Centre Industry ky N Industrial ky S Aurora Community Arboretum Optimist ark Lambert Willson ark Billingham Hts Turnbridge Haverhill Terr erivale Gdns Skipton Trail Mugford Woodroof Mary Calmar Hollandvie w m - rage walking time 8 minutes Earl Luxton Ochalski Holland Valley Trail North Hamilton ark Valemount Way Bridgenorth eckley Ostick Trail edersen Blaydon Lane Snedden Civic Square Amber hill Way McMaster Hollidge Holland Valley Trail South Millcliff continued on page 17 G ate Cir Isaacson ewart Aurora Baywell Trent Bayview Blvd 15

16 Town of East Gwillimbury Nokiidaa Trail - East Gwillimbury The Holland River Trail is part of the Rogers Reservoir Conservation area. The Rogers Reservoir Conservation Area is an 84 hectare (208 acre) conservation area located in the Town of East Gwillimbury. The conservation area is situated along the banks of the East Holland River and consists of a mix of deciduous forest, pine plantation, wetland and meadow habitats. The most significant built feature of the conservation area is a two kilometre section of the Nokiidaa Trail, which connects the Towns of Aurora, Newmarket and East Gwillimbury. The trail provides great vantage points to encounter great blue herons, American coots and sora rails, as well as a variety of other waterfowl and animals. For history buffs, or the just plain curious, the concrete locks and swing bridge found along the East Holland River are timeless remnants of a Ghost Canal System that was built and abandoned in the early 1900 s - without ever having been used. The Newmarket Canal was initially proposed in 1904 by Sir William Mulock - with a vision to convert the East Holland River into a shipping canal that would provide an alternate transportation route from Aurora to Lake Simcoe and the Trent-Severn Waterway. Rogers Reservoir Conservation Area is situated along the Nokiidaa Trail between the communities of Newmarket and Holland Landing. Main entrances to the conservation area are from Green Lane Road at the south end and Old Yonge reet and Mt. Albert Road at the north end, both of which have parking lots. Secondary entrances, without parking lots, are also available from Thomas Shepperd ive and Holland River Boulevard in Holland Landing.
