True? 6/30/2018 meadow 191 A disabled individual with a dog off leash claimed that the ADA allows dogs off leash. True? 6/28/2018 surprise 51 Lots of overnighters. 6/28/2018 mesacortina 19 Mesa Cortina is in good shape with no trees across trail after cutting 2 off trail. 6/27/2018 ptarmigan 16 Included in Day hikers: 2 groups of 2 through hikers on CDT, 1 biker. ***Local homeowner stopped me on road to complain about dog poop on trail (none seen today). Suggested a poop deposit box be placed and monitored at end of trail. Pretty irritated. Said we are using private property so should be monitored. There was a fair amt of horse droppings on trail. 6/26/2018 booth 136 Clear trail, beautiful day filled with a lot of eager, happy hikers. This was also the first mentor hike for our newest ranger, Karen H. 6/26/2018 rock 21 North Rock Creek is in good shape cut most of the logs across trail. 6/25/2018 copper 0 6/25/2018 eastlake 57 Most downed trees are in an area starting about a mile above the East Lake Cr. bridge and extending 2 miles above that. There was one campfire ring at about 8 miles, near the old cabin site that I wish I had time to break up, but I needed to head down. The high school cross country running team was training on the lower trail. I met them outside the wilderness area boundry and dont know how far they were planning to run. It was fun to see them! Other than the team and 2 backpackers, I saw no one else on the trail all day. Boot lake, isnt a lake anymore. It is very shallow and swampy. 6/25/2018 bighorn 30 Clear trail, beautiful weather. All dogs were off leash. Three of the four were quick to put leashes on their dogs when I shared the Wilderness policy with them. Fourth dog owner got very defensive and refused to put a leash on his dog. I wished him well and sent him on his way. 6/24/2018 other 5 Cleared 21 trees from trail in first 2 miles from East Lake Creek/Dead Dog junction 6/24/2018 pitkin 15 FAMILY OF THREE GOING UP DELUGE TRAIL, STATED HAD CABIN AND GOING TO IT, CHECK FOR REPAIRS UPKEEP NEEDED FOR SUMMER, THIS WAS WITHIN A MILE FROM LAKE DELUGE GO DOWN AND THEY WERE GOING UP. COMMENCING AROUND 9:00 A.M. AND ENDING 10:30 A.M. THERE WAS NO PARKING AT PITKIN, PARKED ON GRASS, BUT WORRIED ABOUT TOWN VAIL TICKET OR TOW; THUS BACK TO TRAIL HEAD, THEN TO LAKE DELUGE TRAIL, COMMENCING AROUND 11:00.A.M. AND ENDING 4:30 P.M. 6/24/2018 gorecrk 17 Hiked to Deluge Lake. Route hasnt flattened any over the years, lol. Trail is in very good condition expect for 9 trees down between mile 2 and 3. Location of trees as follows: mile 2 large tree, mile 2.03 step over tree, mile 2.12 I cleared this tree due to a reroute, mile 2.17 single tree, mile 2.25 three trees, mile 2.8 single tree, mile 2.86 large single tree, mile 2.98 single tree. One illegal campfire at Deluge Lake cabin. No snow on the trail. Lake is still half covered with ice. On my return to the TH I ran into a group of 3 with a dog off leash. I talked to the group and the guy, Chuck, told me he owns the cabin at the lake and that it is private property. It was brought in by helicopter 25 years ago while Vail Resorts was building China Bowl. Chuck told me he and some friends put a new roof on the cabin last year. Several hikers commented that they were unable to open 6/23/2018 other 58 the new permit box. 1

I encountered a number of overnight hikers but no one had yet established a campsite. A number of downed trees for which I will send info via . There was one additional tree down on North Willow that has been there a long time forgot to mark this one. 1 First two bridges need work, but I know that is planned for this summer. Excellent tree clearing along the trail with no new ones down. 1 Trail is in great condition. Hiked to the lake and had to deal with some mud above 10,800ft. No snow on the route and no ice on lake. I cleared the large 15 inch tree at mile 2.57 from TH. It was a duck under that I left a few weeks back while clearing other dead fall. There is one easy step over tree at mile 2.4. Wildflowers at spots along the route. Had one hiker complain about parking at the THs on the Eagle County side. He asked that the trailhead boards be updated to state parking rules at and around TH (surface streets). First creek crossing difficult really needs a bridge. 1 Trail is in great condition. Could use 1
3 trimming of tree branches in numerous sections. I encountered an illegal camper shortly after Deluge trail split. Had an illegal campfire burning the night before. I reviewed trail rules and current fire restrictions. At mile 4.3, Gore Creek/Gore Lake junction, there are two illegal campfire rings. I cleared one of them. Mile 4.9 at an elevation of 10,830ft there is a large 20 inch tree over trail. Cross cut saw is likely needed. No reroute, but difficult to climb over. Mile 6.0, just before lake, at an elevation of 11,330ft there is a tree over trail. This is causing a reroute. On the south and south west lake shore I noted 3 illegal campfire rings. One had been burned in the last couple days. A group of two were camping at lake and were following all backcountry rules.
4 They did not self register so I gave them a form and asked them to drop it in the box at TH on their return. My return to the TH was exciting. A large cat followed me from the lake back to Gore Creek trail. It never approached and I only caught a glimpse of it, but that was enough to heighten my senses. I encountered 16 groups 0.7 miles after getting back on the Gore Creek trail. Five of those groups were backpackers and they all had Gore Lake as a final destination. I talked with each group about the camping rules. I only told one group of four about my cat encounter and that was because they had 4 large dogs off leash. All dogs were 50 yards or more ahead of owners. I discussed the leash policy and stressed the potential danger to wildlife and humans by allowing

Nothing on TH signage indicating dogs need to be on leash within wilderness area. 1 Thistle just getting ready to bloom, couldnt tell if it was native or noxious 1 Not a Wilderness Hike 1 Trail is in great condition with the following tree information, all distance from Pitkin TH Mile 2.7 a 10 inch dead snag over trail, no reroute Mile 3.0 Snag over trail, no reroute Mile 3.3 large 17 inch tree over trail, requires a duck under, no reroute at this time Mile 4.0 cleared one small diameter tree from trail Mile 4.1 tree over trail, reroute on both side of trail Trail is free of snow and the lake is clear of ice. 1 No campers at Slake Lake, also as stated in 1
6 6/21/2018 gorecrk 14 prior report about 165 trees across trail, from Slate Lake to intersection of Harrigan Creek trail and Gore Trail THe trail is in amazingly good condition. The only tree across the trail was about 20mins above the graves, just below the first big meadow. It was about 1 1/2 feet in diameter. The trail was muddy in places but only a few patches of snow. Still some ice in one of the smaller sections of the lake. None of the people with dogs off leash were at all interested in putting their dog on a leash. We did talk about danger to the dogs and I also spoke about the problem with a dog jumping on me, which one of the dogs did. I met two teen age boys who were heading to the lake to camp. They had a copy of a map without a scale and therefore had no idea how far it was or 1
7 where they were on the trail. I was able to pull out my map and add a few details to their map, which I hope was helpful. TONS of glacier lilies blooming on the upper 1 mile, in those wet meadows! 6/21/2018 ptarmigan 25 Trailhead Box: No campfire sign and map are half gone. Dog sign is sideways and has fallen to bottom of box. There was a large amount of horse droppings at several points along trail, not just where Angler Mt horses cross. The trail is now clear for the first 2 miles of trail. Nice sections of blue columbine are in full bloom. 1 6/17/2018 rock 15 All ~12 trees are stepovers (some just barely). I led a boy scout troup from Chicago over to Boulder Creek (by truck) so they had a better shot at Boulder Lake (it was raining, and the afternoon was getting on). The birds were singing u a storm, and I heard it all, thanks to my new hearing aids (I really was missing those high frequencies) warbler, hermit thrush, whitecrowned sparrow, more. Also the last of the spring peepers. 1 6/17/2018 bighorn 0 Hiked to the end of the trail in the upper 1

Single >9" diameter tree across trail within first two miles. Trail is in excellent condition. Illegal campsites/campfire rings that border the lake need to be revegetated/ campfire rings need to be dismantled. Spoke with overnight camper%92s sons and they stated their two dads were on hike and would be back later in the afternoon. I gave them the Holy Cross Wilderness pamphlet to give to parents and requested they move their campsite that night to the required 100 feet back from water. 1 Cleared 10 trees from trail. Trail clear to lake. 1 3 trees across trail about 1 mile from trail head group 1

Trails fairly regularly spaced in first two miles of trail (Ben already communicated this to Ken, so it may be taken care of already) Drainage is poor on a trail north of Fancy Lake towards Holy Cross City 1 Lots of stopping and talking to hikers and campers. Many were appreciative and voiced how happy they were to see ranger on trail. Lots of information exchange. Many dogs off lease. wish I had more than one dog lease as I could have used it. The man I gave the dog lease to, did not return it tail head. Most folks were cooperative and kindly leased their dogs when asked. There was a group of young people jumping in the water along the first full on view to the gore lake, and they appeared to 1

Cindy, On Friday I made a quick run up to South Willow Falls from Buffalo Cabin TH. Recall I just cleared this route 2 weeks ago and there are already more trees down, two over 15%94 in diameter. Trees are down on the section of trail that connects Buffalo Mtn trail to Gore Range Trail. 8 trees over the trail on this section and there is also a snag within 0.2 miles of GRT. 2 illegal campfires above the falls first is at an elevation of 10,100%92 on the edge of cliffs looking over the lower falls trail (this is that first section of very smooth rock that you need to cross on the GRT) and the second is at 10,150%92 off 1
