L E W I S R I V E R G A Z E T T E September 5, 2013 Volume 3, Issue 9 Winding down SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST: Winding down. What s Happening? Brick Tipi Contact info: Making painting Les & Karen Sundstrom Lewis River Campground NE Lucia Falls Rd. Yacolt, WA Caretakers.lrcg@yahoo.com Whew! This has been quite a season. We were able to accomplish quite a bit to make your stay here at the campground more enjoyable. The summer weather cooperated pretty good with just enough rain to keep the grass and trees alive. We ve got some more planting to do this fall so are counting on the fall rains to nourish the new grass and plants for a good start to growing. It s always a joy to see what each camp comes up with as themes and activities. One camp continued their theme of Exodus from last year where they had gone through the famine, which ended in a Feast! This year they had to make bricks out of mud and straw, and were very creative in what they built. See pictures on pages 6-7. Another camp worked on teamwork and helping each other by struggling through a tough obstacle course with help from their cabin-mates. Camp Zarahemla s new picnic tables have been stained and are ready for use, even though it s now September. We REALLY appreciate their efforts! Other camps have used scavanger hunt type activities to learn bible verses. Each cabin had to hurry to different stations and recite the correct scripture in order to earn the next clue. Great fun! A lot of hard work and creativity goes into all these youth camps and we thank the volunteers for making it all possible.

LEWIS RIVER GAZETTE Page 2 (Continued from page 1) Remember that orphan fawn I told you about a few months ago? Well, it seems that he/she (?) didn t hook up with other deer in the area but has stuck around pretty close on the grounds. It s actually not looking too bad either. I noticed this morning that my strawberry plants in the front yard have all been stripped of their leaves so I guess he considers our house area a pretty safe place to hang out. Apparently he doesn t like oatmeal because he didn t touch the oatmeal I put out behind the shop. (What do I know?). We are busy making our list of work week and winter projects and figuring out a budget for 2014, and are still waiting on Clark County to approve the Master Plan. The tipi camp is moving forward with the cleanup of the upper hill slash piles and grading. It really looks nice up there, and grass will soon be planted. The improvements have been met with rave reviews from all our clients and we plan to continue improving as much as time and money will allow. Blessings to each of you, Karen

LEWIS LEWIS RIVER RIVER GAZETTE GAZETTE Page Page 3 4 What s happening at the Campground 1. Finish shop and organizing. 2. Planting the bench (hill) with grass. 3. Repair auto bridge over creek. 4. Weed eating and mowing (ongoing). 5. Bury irrigation system for fields. 6. Prepping the residence for exterior paint (YEAH!) 7. Getting the word out about tipi camp. 7. Finding and cutting poles for the tipis (to dry over the winter). This fall we plan to designate a Saturday for painting the second tipi with hand prints. We tried to work it in for Camp Zarahemla but there was no time to work it in. This will personalize the tipi for our children and adults alike. The Junior High Girls Camp were able to paint the door flap with their hand prints during their camp. So coming soon! Tipi painting.

BRICK MAKING-EGYPTIAN STYLE First you need dirt. Then add water A little straw for body.. (Watch out for the slave master) And stomp, stomp, stomp! More stomping, everyone gets in the act Believe it or not, these kids were having a great time! They had to make 100 bricks before dinner, and chose to make whatever they wanted out of the bricks.

This was the Pharoh s throne This is the brick making form they used. A well that actually held water A replica of the Golden Gate Bridge A house Another house
