3 Description: The approximately 200 acre Bee Tree Park is located in the south east part of St. Louis County overlooking the Mississippi River. The mostly wooded and hilly site was originally developed as a weekend retreat for the family of the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company founder, Eugene Nims. The park includes the original home and garden, barn, picnic shelters, restrooms, a play area and a 13 acre fishing lake stocked by Missouri Department of Conservation. View of Nims Mansion Lake at Bee Tree Park Site Observation Summary: Frisbee Shelter well maintained. New picnic tables. Shelter wood recently painted. No lighting. Overlook near Frisbee shelter needs deck & railing repair/replacement. Trees at overlook needs to be trimmed to improve view. Interpretive signs needed. Bench colors and styles inconsistent in this area. Crow's Roost Trail - Nice ground asphalt surface. Needs more wayfinding signs. Replace broken bench adjacent to path. Fisherman's Trail - Some erosion at intersection with Cedar Trail. Erosion also at lake edge. Better location of trail markers needed at intersection of Cedar Trail. Shade structure over bench needs roof replaced. Paw Paw Trail - Narrow dirt trail with some erosion. Stone entry columns and gate in good condition. Nims Mansion stone/steel gazebo needs minor tuckpointing. Nims Mansion outdoor plaza concrete cracked and settling. Needs repair. Stone retaining walls leaning and needs tuckpointing. Stone stairs leading to the grotto need to be replaced. Trail to the Nims Mansion Overlooks needs a barrier in addition to the sign to minimize access. Should consider adding a walkway adjacent to the main loop road. Witnessed numerous people walking in the street. Play equipment and surface look relatively new and in good condition. 11 Current Name: Nimms Mansion # Historic Name (if applies): Current Use: Not open to Public, Weddings Original Use (if applies): Residence Current Owner: St. Louis County Parks Square Footage: 4,492 SF Type of Structure: Stone residential Accessibility: Not ADA Accessible Description: Stone residential structure built in 1929 Sign at entry states not open to public but expressed to AAIC that building is used for weddings. AAIC recommends full code study is performed to assess liability of have general public in this structure. Building interior and exterior is not ADA Accessible. Gazebo needs stone repair and wrought iron painted. General exterior cleanup suggested. Exterior sidewalks cracked and settled. Creating numerous trip hazards. Exterior retaining walls need major repairs. Slate roof shingles need repaired. Shingles have shifted and in some areas have come loose. Stone exterior in fair shape. Spot locations need grout tuck pointing. Wood trim around windows show signs of weathering and need attention. Interior flooring consists of tile and concrete and need repairs. Plaster walls show signs of age and need repairs. 5 Total restrooms, but only one restroom active. Electrical system has had a recent panel upgrade, but building wiring needs replaced throughout: Broken fixtures, exposed wiring, code violations, etc. HVAC system has had minor upgrades but needs total upgrades for proper function. No Fire suppression system in building. Plumbing system consists of cast iron piping and needs full replacement throughout. Building foundation is in good condition considering age.
