3 Earth Day Update 40 th Year Anniversary Join the Great Outdoors for an Earth Day event Thursday, April 22. We will participate with other organizations to clean up litter and debris in Berdoo Canyon which leads into Joshua Tree National Park. Meet at Pets Mart at Ramon & Crossley 7:30 AM to carpool to the site. Desert Adventures, Great Outdoors, Desert Trails Hiking Clubs, Riverside County personnel, and Jennifer Taylor, BLM Volunteer Coordinator / Outdoor Recreation Planner will be working together. This is a great opportunity to show your support and participate in a project to improve our local environment. Desert Adventures is offering their ranch site for a pot-luck overnight camp out after the clean up for anyone who participates to make it a really fun event! This is a spectacular location and a rare opportunity to experience a unique evening located on the San Andreas Fault enjoying the desert night stars. Both tents and RV s are welcomed or you can join in for a campfire evening. Details to be announced later on the Yahoo Group. We will post a poll on the Yahoo Group site where you can RSVP along with additional details. Speaker Series: Wed, May 19 Jayah Faye Paley of AdventureBuddies! Demo & Participation POLES for Hiking, Walking, Mobility & Life POLES: Put Some Power in Your Walking & Hiking! Using poles while walking or hiking enables you to get a total body workout while enjoying the outdoors and connecting with your friends. Optimal use can significantly extend your hiking life. Join us and practice techniques with top quality poles. You can walk, so you can use poles, right? NOT TRUE. Correct, optimal use in many ways is not intuitive, it's often just the opposite. Certain movements that people think are totally natural can instead cause strain. And what s the point of reducing knee stress if you re going to injure your hands, shoulders or neck? Correct use of poles will: Improve balance, confidence & upper body strength, reduce risk of injury, increase endurance & energy, improve posture & cardio-pulmonary function, preserve joints, reduce stress on knees, ankles, hips, and spine, improve performance on almost any kind of terrain, achieve a more fluid gait & bi-lateral stability Poles can do more than simply add stabilization; they get your whole body moving. Using the upper body while walking enhances cardio-pulmonary function and can facilitate weight loss, says R. G. Macdonald, MD, FACC, Interventional Cardiologist with Carolina Medical Affiliates in South Carolina. Fat burning is faster, easier and more efficient with poles because more muscles are recruited in less time. Walking with poles also provides spinal lubrication and weight-bearing exercise for the arms, legs, spine, back, chest and core muscles; which is recommended for the prevention and management of osteoporosis. Our speaker is the creator of two award-winning DVD s that focus on training optimal use of poles. One DVD focuses on hiking and exercise walking. The other focuses on learning how to achieve and maintain mobility for those with balance challenges. More information can be found at The cardio benefit over regular walking can be profound. Plus it s FUN!

4 Great Outdoors Joint Chapter Campout Palm Springs & Orange County/Long Beach Chapters Big Bear Lake Serrano Camp Mike Roth (OCLB) May 20-23, 2010 (4 days / 3 nights) One of the most beautiful Southern California mountain destinations, the Serrano campground is ideally located near the lake with large sites. Great hiking and bicycle paths right from the camp. The Discovery Nature Center is walking distance and close to restaurants and small boutique stores in the town of Big Bear. Facilities include fire rings, picnic tables, flush toilets and showers at the campground. Room for 7 RV s (no hookups) and 25 tents. Serrano Campground is located in a mountain setting within the San Bernardino National Forest near Big Bear Lake. Address: North Shore Lane (Highway 38), Fawnskin, CA THE OUTDOORS EXPERIENCE PROGRAM Phase One: April 24 and 25, 2010 and Phase Two: May 14-16, 2010 PROGRAM OVERVIEW Conducting oneself amongst nature is the basic intent of Great Outdoors. What you know about hiking skills, camping equipment, and the environment, can make your outdoor adventure much more fun--and safer too. THE OUTDOORS EXPERIENCE program trains leaders not only for Great Outdoors, but also allows any person the opportunity to learn more about outdoor recreation, even if there is no desire to lead any future trips. Not only will you learn about keeping warm, choosing a campsite, and making water safe to drink, but you ll be taught minimum impact camping techniques so that you can leave the natural environment for others to enjoy as well. Skills also include: map and compass, guiding others, and specific first aid principles for the outdoor traveler. A portion of the training covers group management and Great Outdoors procedures and policy. Each student will be provided with their own training manual. As in past years, the first day of Phase One will provide participants with DAY HIKE LEADERCERTIFICATION. After completion of the entire program, you ll receive FULL TRIPLEADER CERTIFICATION, a wall certificate and a certification patch. When supplemented by the Red Cross Basic First Aid Course (taken on your own), you ll be qualified to lead others on both weekend and day trips. The basic program consists of two valuable sessions. The sessions must be taken in order, but not necessarily in a single year. Phase One (April 24 and 25, 2010) will be held in the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains at Canyon Park just above Monrovia, California. It will be largely classroom work, with hands-on equipment demonstrations, video and a short day hike. Subjects to be explored will cover four, wide-ranging topics: Possessions (equipment), Planning, Protection and Procedures. Because of the Day Hike Leader Certification, the day hike will take place rain or shine so please bring appropriate footwear and rain gear in case it s needed. Phase Two ( May 14-16, 2010 ) is an outdoor, group, car-camping weekend at a National Park Service site in the Santa Monica Mountains. This will be field exercise training, a chance for you to put to real use the skills you ve learned so far. Practical work includes: map and compass, leading and participating on day hikes, outdoor cooking, camp management and protecting the environment. Phase Two will offer the chance for deep-sky, telescope astronomy or star talk and a night hike.
