Outdoors Experience 1 and 2 Evening at the Ballpark Friday June 6:45 pm Leader: Tom The Palm Springs Power, our hometown ball club, plays in a new league this year, the Southern California Collegiate Baseball Association. This will be their first game against a league opponent. The league is made up of leading players from a wide variety of college teams, most of them trying to attract the attention of pro scouts. The atmosphere at the games is small town and friendly. The college boys are easy on the eyes, too. Tickets are $6.00 ($5.00 for seniors). If you come late, join us in the stands along the third base line. The General Meeting is at Desert Pride Center, Palm Springs The meeting month, is the first Tuesday of the month, June 5, from 7:30-8:00 pm for social hour, and members meeting from 8:00-9:00 pm. The Core Group meets from 6:30-7:30 PM. (business meeting) The Center s address is 611 S. Palm Canyon Drive, Unit A., Palms Springs, CA.
2 GOT HIKE! Most hikes meet in front of HUNTER S on Arenas Road, Palm Springs, unless otherwise specified. Bring plenty of water and a snack or lunch. Thomas Road to East Summit, Saturday, June 8:00 am What a wonderful hike with lots of views going up and coming down. Length: Hiking time: 12 miles 6 hours There also some interesting sites I observed while scouting it out. You have to go to see them. The road we will hike IS gently graded and easy to hike up and down with multiple rest stops both ways. I saw 5 cars that day and they were waving happily to see a hiker...at the top are picnic tables and bathrooms where we will have our lunch (45 MINUTES). Also, a quick hike from the picnic tables we will fill up our water bottles at Tool Box spring before we head back down the mountain. What to bring? A hat, hiking boots, sunscreen, & bug spray if you go to tool box spring. A light jacket if the coastal area is experiencing fog. I had cool air follow me which was delightful. Note start Elevation gain: Difficulty: Return at: Hike leader: 8:00 am 2000 feet Moderate to Strenuous 5:00 pm Craig Round Valley Loop, Saturday, June 9:00 am From the top of the tram, we will hike through pine forests to Round Valley on a trail that works its way up a small valley with a stream that should still be flowing. From there, we will retrace our steps 3/10 of a mile to a junction with a trail that heads east and provides nice views of Mt. San Jacinto and its college neighbors before joining a trail that returns to the tram. Note: There is a $21.00 charge for the tramway unless you have a summer or annual pass. Length: Hiking time: Elevation gain: Difficulty: Return at: Hike leader: 4.5 miles 3 hours 900 feet Moderately easy 3:00 pm Bruce Caramba Overlook, Sunday, June 7:50 AM (so we can catch the 8:30 tram) We will take the Palm Springs Aerial Tram to Long Valley. The trail goes south from the ranger station to Laws Junction, and then east to the overlook. The pools and waterfalls of nearby Tahquitz Creek will probably have water despite the dry winter. This is a long hike, but well worth it. Much of the trail goes through mature forests. Along part of the trail we will have spectacular views to the south and west. At the lookout we will have a nice view down Tahquitz Canyon to Palm Springs. Please note that the net elevation gain of 2,000 feet occurs on the the return trip. Length: Hiking time: Elevation gain: Difficulty: Return at: Hike leader: Moonlight Hike, Bump and Grind, Friday, June 8:00 pm ( See page 3) Last month s Pacific Crest Trail hike 12 miles 8 hours 2,600 Very Strenuous 6:00 pm Bruce Note: There is a $21.95 charge for the tramway unless you have a summer or annual pass.
3 Moonlight Hike Friday June 8:00 pm Bump Grind Trail Meet at the Starbucks in the Target Shopping Center Hwy 111 at Canyon Plaza, E. Palm Canyon Dr., Cathedral City At 8:00 pm We'll carpool to the trailhead for the Bump & Grind trail in Palm Desert behind the Desert Crossing Shopping Center (where there is another Target! so if you've got some shopping to do...) You can get a Google map pointing to the trailhead we'll be using at If you want to meet us there, allow for the appropriate amount of drive time from Cathedral City. The hike is 3.4 miles round trip on dirt road and regular foot trails, with an elevation gain of 1,200 feet. At night the Bump & Grind trail becomes much more pleasant than it is by day. The lights of Palm Desert are especially striking.
