3 All-Chapter Great Outdoors Cinco de Mayo Weekend, May 5-7 Palm Springs chapter members are welcome to participate in any or all of the weekend s activities, and do not need to register or pay a fee. There will be a wine and cheese meet and greet at The Villa Resort from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, although it will be a no host event for anyone not staying at the resort (i.e., you will have to pay for your drinks). There will be a full day of activities on Saturday, beginning with a hike and a caravan to thrift and consignment shops, both in the morning. There will be time Saturday afternoon to spend around the pool. After Great Outdoors booked the Villa, another group also booked rooms, and they are having a special pool party called Melt by the Pool from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There will be a live DJ, calendar men, prizes, and some sort of goody bag upon entering (while supplies last). For more information, check out All members of Great Outdoors who are staying at the Villa will receive a wristband upon checking in so that they may participate in the pool party. In addition, Tony Nemger of the Villa has generously donated 10 wristbands that will be provided to the first 10 members of the Palm Springs chapter who call Craig Courtright at (If you leave a message, please leave an understandable telephone number.) Craig will notify you if you are one of the first 10, and he will leave a list of the names at the front desk so that you can pick up a wristband. Once the free wristbands are gone, entry to the pool party is a $10 donation. Saturday evening there will be games around the pool beginning at 7:00 p.m. Bring a CD for the Mexican hat dance and something to pin on the hot guy. There will be other games and events, all involving prizes. The evening will end with a hike to the bars. 4 GREAT OUTDOORS PALM SPRINGS Next 4x4 Sunday May 28 Have you gone out on a 4x4 trip you d like to share with our group? Please consider leading a trip for our group! We ll help organize it. Ed For late breaking 4x4 news, join our Yahoo Group at: When trips are announced, we try to make room for passengers on a space available basis. They usually go fast, so, sign up early when trips are announced. Ed or EdEmond@gmail.com Description: Join the Great Outdoors for another 4x4 (4 wheel drive) off road adventure. Our chapter first did a trip similar to this one on 10/2/ We will drive down the I-10 to the Chiriaco Summit exit (approx. a 50 minute drive from Cathedral City) and top off our vehicles, get coffee and perhaps a quick snack. We'll then cross back over the freeway and begin our adventure on the Red Canyon Trail. The trail is easy and contains no boulders or lots of loose rock to traverse like on some previous trips. The trail initially goes through the Maniobra Valley and then follows the ridge of the canyon through the Orocopia Mountains Wilderness as it moves towards and ends at the Salt Creek Wash. Before the end of the trail, we will turn right, descend into the canyon to explore one end of it. We'll stop for lunch. During the scout trip on 4/5/06 Gardner found a Geocache (a GPS "game") just by accident. Several of us took a group shot on the camera left in their hidden cache. They are going to be surprised when they develop the film! After lunch, we will head back to the Bradshaw Trail, turn right and follow it all the way to the Coachella Canal. We'll see parts of the abandoned Eagle Mining Railroad along the way. The picture to the right shows a trestle that crosses the wash. Due to the construction of a new 33 mile lined water canal (to replace the unlined canal), we will be forced to turn right and follow the canal until we can find a point where we can cross over. You'll be able to see the progress of this massive project ($84 million) which was front page news on 4/5/06 in the Desert Sun. If you have the book "Backcountry Adventures: Southern California" (2002 edition), this is trail # 44. The Red Canyon Trail itself is listed as 13.8 miles, 2 hours driving time and a difficulty rating of 4. A sampling of our 4x4 Beefcake

6 Telescope Peak, Death Valley National Park, Thursday, May 11 Friday /Saturday/Sunday, May 12/13/14 Telescope Peak at 11, 049 feet is the highest point in Death Valley National Park. The elevation gain from the valley floor to the summit is over 11,300 feet, making it the 4 th most extreme elevation change in the United States. Thankfully, we will be climbing it from the Mahogany Flat Campground trailhead at 8,200 feet, on Friday, following an overnight at that primitive* camp, Thursday night. It still is a strenuous 14 mile round trip hike, at high elevations, but you re rewarded with killer views in all directions, with the full length of Death Valley practically below your feet! Nearing the summit, you will pass through a grove of ancient bristlecone pines as well. A return to Mahogany Flat Campground for a second night is planned. A Saturday/Sunday continuation into Death Valley NP is optional, and on your own. Lodging, camping, and general park information can be had at: * No water, bring your own. Pit toilets. No charge, on a first come, first served basis. Plan accordingly for two nights primitive camping and hike requirements at high altitudes. The road from Charcoal Kilns to Mahogany Flat Campground is rough and steep, accessible to high clearance vehicles. Should weather/road conditions require, camping may be at Wildrose Campground, with Wildrose Peak substituted for Telescope Peak (8.4 miles R/T, with a 2000 foot elevation gain). Hiking time: 9 hours Elevation gain: 3000 feet Difficulty: strenuous Leave at: 8:00 am Friday, 5/12 from Mahogany Flat Campground, DVNP Return at: 5:00 pm Mahogany Flat Campground, DVNP Hike leader: Chris cporter220@dc.rr.com Note: There is a $20.00 vehicle entry fee to the park. 10 Outdoors Experience Program, Phase II Results We really lucked out at Phase II. Between two storms, we were able to squeeze out two beautiful days to complete our program. The recent storms left Circle X Ranch green with flowers blooming everywhere and no dust. Along the route of the disaster hike were many waterfalls to view with streams at their full potential. At the end of the program, we walked away with 10 new Trip Leaders. Here's the breakdown: Of the 13 participants who completed Phase I this year, 12 signed up for Phase II along with one other participant who had completed Phase I three years ago. Of those 13 people, two were too ill to attend and one was too busy at school to complete the weekend. The five non-members all became members of Great Outdoors between Phase I & II. The following is a list of those people, by chapter, who received Full Trip Leader Certification:! Santa Barbara/Ventura Counties Chris Fava Joseph Domingos Orange County/Long Beach Jay Crowley John Ruedisueli Bryan Autz Los Angeles Juan Serrano Jaime Cyr Peter Panec Torin Caffrey Menard Jaramillo Congratulations to these people and to the chapters who have gained new Trip Leaders. This year's Outdoors Experience Program produced 15 new Day-Hike Leaders, 10 new Full Trip Leaders and 5 new members. I think that's a fairly successful program! Thanks again to our devoted and hard working instructors; Mario Voce, Kendall Rabun, Wayne Winstead and Frederick Brown for their time and expertise that made this year's program such a success.
