We will be hing from the Coachella Valley Preserve on the Hidden Palms Trail. The moon rises at 6:22 PM so it will be great viewing. 2 UPCO ING EVENTS Vandeventner Trail Sunday, 10 Feb. at 9:00 AM. This he is located in the Indian Canyons. The trail foll ws the stream at the bottom of Palm Canyon for about one le before ascending a ridge that affords magnificent views of the San Jacinto mountain range. The trail meanders through cholla cacti fields before descending into the lush Fern Canyon area. Length: 4.5 miles Hing time: 3 hours Elevation gain: 900 ft. Difficulty: easy/moderate Note: There is a $6.00 per person admission fee into the Indian Canyons. Senior rate available. Return at 1:30 PM. Contact Dwayne Hannon at Big Bear Weekend Snow Play March Orange County/Long Beach Chapters Join us for a fun active or relaxing weekend in the snow at Big Bear Inn. There are many activities to participate in snow play, snowshoes, skiing, boarding, sight seeing or just go shopping. Or just relax in the snow covered mountain. Coachella Valle Preserve Trail - Thursda 14 Feb. 9:00 AM. This he is located in the 13,000-acre Coachella Valley Preserve. The trail is not demanding yet yields a wonde desert oasis experience. The trail follows a stream filled with "Pup" fish and then winds through a sandy wash before passing a pond and ending in an area of sand dunes and moonscape. Length: 3 miles Hing Time: 3 hours Elevation Gain: 100 ft. Difficulty: Easy Return at 2:00 PM. Contact Doug Quigley at Murray Peak Saturday, 23 Feb. at 9:00 AM. This is a strenuous he but well worth the 2000 ft. climb to the top. At the peak there are picnic tables for lunch and a drop-dead 360-degree view of the desert, Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains. Length: 10 miles Hing Time: 5 hours Elevation Gain: 2100 feet Difficulty: Strenuous Return at 3:00 PM. Bring plenty of water and snack/lunch. 1 LA Chapter presents Car Camping at its Finest! March (Thurs-Sun) This the best camping year yet. Our first car camp trip of the year is to one of our all time favorite destinations: Death Valley. Spend Easter, Thursday through Sunday, with your fellow campers as we explore the natural wonders of this National Park. We are staying in the group camp area of Texas Springs which is centrally located for short trips to the swimming area in Furnace Creek, the salt flats of Badwater, to the longer drives of Dante's View, the Ubehebe Crater, and Scotty's Castle. It may be hard to believe, but there are some who have never been to Death Valley before. This is your chance to leave the winter gloom of LA behind. The daytime high temps will be in the low 80s, while at night a comfortable low 60s is expected. Death Valley is perfect for exploring by vehicle. For most attractions, just pull over, stop and explore. Come discover that the desert five spot is a wildflower, not a skin rash, and there are no horses running at the Racetrack! 3 Palm Springs Chapter Black Rock Campground Joshua Tree National Park April Amenities: We reserved four campsites. Campsites are limited to 6 people, 3 tents, and 2 cars. (Note: There is no off site parking available. Car pooling is essential.) A Nature Center is in the middle of the campground and where you check in. Restroom with flush toilets are nearby, but there are no showers. Bring Sun Showers. Potable water is available. Campers with RV's or Trailers can call to make separate reservations, as these are all tent sites. National Park Reservation line is open 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Pacific Time. I have found it is easier to get through at the later times. Activities: Numerous hing trails are in and around the campground for all levels of hers, and distances. Day hes will be planned on Friday PM and Saturday Morning. We are very close to the entrance of the Joshua Tree National Park. Entrance Fee is $10.00 per vehicle for those interested in touring the Park. However, our campground is located in a beautiful canyon surrounded by Joshua Trees, cacti, and other desert shrubs which should be blooming at this time. What to bring: The usual Tent, sleeping bag and pad, clothes you can layer, stove, fuel, food flashlight, and ten essentials, plus a bundle of firewood. Plan on a dish for the pot luck on Saturday evening. Pets: Pets are allowed on Leash at all times, and not allowed on hing trails. Check in/check out times is 12:00 Noon Friday and Sunday. Cancellation Policy: No refunds after April 12, Directions: From 1-10 exit on CA Hwy 62 to Yucca Valley to Joshua Lane, 5 miles south of Yucca Valley. There is a big sign for the campground there. 7 044119t /U44a Training Program 2002 You're invited to join us for THE OUTDOORS EXPERIENCE 2002! Conducting oneself amongst nature is the basic intent of Great Outdoors. What you know about hing, camping skills and the natural environment can make your outdoor adventure much more fun--and safer too. During THE OUTDOORS EXPERIENCE PROGRAM you'll learn about gear and clothing--what to buy and how not get ripped off. We'll teach you specific first aid principles for the outdoor traveler, show you how to read a map and compass, help you feel confident guiding others. When you're done, you'll be able navigate a trail, build a fire, and make water safe to drink. All students will be provided with their own, permanent training manual. The basic program consists of two valuable sessions. PHASE ONE (March 23-24) is mostly an indoor weekend held at a cabin site. PHASE TWO (April 20-21) is an outdoor camping weekend. The sessions must be taken in order, but not necessarily in a single year. Most participants attend simply to learn or re-sharpen their outdoors skills. But in addition, you can become certified to lead G.O. hes and outings. Even if you cannot come to the entire program, simply attending the first day of Phase One will give you DAY HIKE LEADER CERTIFICATION. After completion of the entire two-weekend program, you can receive FULL TRIP LEADER CERTIFICATION and a certification patch. When supplemented by the Red Cross Basic First Aid Course (taken on your own), you'll be qualified to lead others on both weekend and day trips. COST FOR THE PROGRAM IS ONLY $35 Once you've taken The Outdoors Experience you may retake the program again anytime at no further charge. Some chapters even have a policy of reimbursing the entire fee to members who go on to lead their chapter trips! There is no better value in any outdoor training program anywhere.
