2 (This trips was postponed from January due to rain at the beach) San Onofre State Beach is a rare 3,000- acre scenic coastal-canyon park with high environmental values and recreation use. The park includes three distinct areas: San Onofre Bluffs, San Onofre Surf Beach, and San Mateo Campground. San Mateo Campground lies a short distance inland from the 3.5 miles of sandy beaches within San Onofre State Beach. A 1.5 mile Nature Trail With warm days and cool evenings, this is the perfect time to visit the Salton Sea. It is peak time for migratory birds along the shore and stunning sunsets against the mountains and the sea. Kayaking along the shore is one of the most popular activities. The Mecca Hills have hidden canyons San Mateo Beach Camping February 3-5, 2017 connects the campground to Trestles Beach, a world class surfing site. San Mateo Creek flows just east of the campground outward towards the ocean creating key riparian and wetland habitats which host some rare and even endangered species. There are lots of tent spaces, hot showers, and flush toilets. We will not have any RV hookups, but water fillup and a dump station are available. Bluffs Beach Trail Salton Sea/Mecca Beach Camping March 17-19, Aptly named Bluffs Beach, part of San Onofre State Beach, is a three mile long sand strand with a backdrop of magnificent, 100-foot high bluffs. There are dramatically eroded sandstone cliffs, a kind of Bryce Canyon by the sea. From Beach Trail 1 to Beach Trail 6 is 5.6 miles round trip. The beach, named for Egyptian Saint Onuphrius, is a joy to walk. There are also great bicycle trails in the area. For more information click here for tripnotes. To contact the leader click here that twist and turn and narrow down to a tight slot canyon. We will get up close and personal with active geothermal features and the volcanoes along the sea. Salvation Mountain and Slab City offer an inside perspective on unique cultures and lifestyles. Our campsites at Mecca Beach with evening campfire activities and potluck provide relaxing times for enjoying and sharing experiences with friends in the great outdoors Click here for trip notes

3 Saline Valley Camping Trip April 23-29, 2017 Great Outdoors will be car camping at the Warm Springs in Saline Valley, one of the most remote parts of Death Valley National Park. There you will be able to fill your days with a whole lot of nothing: no radio, no TV, no internet, no phone, no electricity, no flush toilets. But you won t be bored. You can fill that nothing with endless, clothing-optional bathing in numerous pools filled with naturally hot spring water. (If nudity offends you, we recommend that you do not go on this trip. There will be naked people there. Nudity is not required) The climate is like that of Coachella Valley, including possibly strong winds. There are mountain vistas in all directions and the night sky is without compare. There will be a new moon on April 26th while we are there, which means there will be no moonlight to hide the stars. Beginning in the 1960s, volunteers built concrete tubs and a shower. Those improvements, which could not be built in the national park today, are accepted by the park service, as is the clothing-optional nature of the area. You will meet all sorts of interesting, friendly people, some of whom have been coming to the Warm Springs for decades. Besides the bathing in the springs, those who are coming with 4-wheel drive vehicles will organize day trips to explore parts of Saline Valley or even go out of the valley into other parts of Death Valley National Park. You may need to bring extra gas! We ll have a potluck on Monday night. Bring something to share if you wish to participate. We ll also have a wine tasting one afternoon. Our goal is to identify a cheap, yet durable wine that travels well in the desert. Box wines, cheap bottled wine, and even non-wine are your welcome contribution. We ll provide an array of fine plastic ware, cheese & crackers. You can tent camp or bring an RV, but your vehicle must be able to traverse at least 40 miles of sometimes rough dirt road to get to the springs. The last 7 miles of the road into Warm Springs will be a challenge for most RVs. A high clearance vehicle with good tires (and a good, full-size spare tire) is required. 4WD vehicles may be required on some of the optional treks from camp during the week. Extra seating in those vehicles may be available for passengers, but we do not guarantee it. Click here for Trip Notes. The Palm Springs Chapter is one of the busiest in Great Outdoors. Just look at the trips being planned for the next few months. From May we re going to the desert for the Corporate Jamboree. This opportunity for members of all the chapters to come together and catch up with each other and enjoy hiking and exploring Santa Barbara county is one of the highlights of the year. The last Jamboree was a fabulous trip to the Grand Canyon. From June 2-4 we re going to Silent Valley Resort in the Sierras above Banning. This beautiful area offers many hikes and other activities to start your summer vacation. July finds us in Big Bear at the Serrano Camp. This park, near the lake offers great hiking and access to fun in the water. August 27-September 4 is Burning Man. This annual gathering of 10,000 SAVE the Date! Upcoming Trips with Great Outdoors - PS of your closest friends is the highlight of the year for many people. It is important to note that the Main Sale of tickets opens on March 22. You must already have a Burner Profile on file before the ticket sale start. More information is available here. In September we re heading for Lytle Creek/ Bonita Ranch Campground. This beautiful park in the Sierras above Fontana has lush trails and beautiful waterfalls. It is sure to be a great way to end your summer. So mark your calendars for any of these trips that you find interesting. We ll see you in the Great Outdoors. 3

The Imperial Valley is a hidden treasure in the United States. Due to the warm climate and water accessibility, there are hundreds of different plant varieties that flourish in the desert atmosphere. While the fertile desert houses university research and plant variety development few of us seem to know the incredible impact the Imperial Valley has on the agricultural industry. On February 9, we ll meet in the parking lot of Costco and carpool down to this agricultural wonderland for a day on the farm. Uh, and don t wear your city duds this is a farm so dress down, ready to get your hands and maybe everything else a little dirty. FARM SMART tours offer a unique experience to learn about the contribution that agriculture in the Imperial Valley makes to your dinner table. The tours showcase research being done at UC Desert Research and Extension Center. During the tour you will have an opportunity to harvest your own fresh produce. Our tour starts with a presentation of the new developments happening in agriculture. You will be provided with a sack to harvest your veggies and then it s off to inspect the fields by tractor and wagon. Later it s back to the farm house for lunch and ice cream. Before we return to our cars and home, there will be suggestions of how to prepare that harvest of vegetables you have picked. When the tour is over we ll return to Palm Desert and our waiting kitchens to have a wonderful dinner of fresh vegetables. You might even have visions of sugar plums while you sleep. RSVP to Scott if you want to get down on the farm 5

Along this canyon and especially at the end are very colorful explosions of soil and rock formations. Entrance to the grotto is low and narrow but after a quick crawl it opens into the cave system. This leads to a rock wall which requires careful climbing. Some hikers may feel uncomfortable doing this and can backtrack out. Those who continue will find themselves in Alice in Wonderland! This hike is most enjoyable even if the grotto is not entered. BRING A FLASHLIGHT FOR THE GROTTO. 6

This isn t the only game in town, especially in a town like Palm Springs, so a big welcome to these men and women for choosing Great Outdoors. So now, the two of you, get involved, we have lots to do in this club. We look forward to seeing you on a hike, camping trip or a game night. Tachevah Canyon/Waterfall Hike By David S. On January 3rd, 14 showed up and all enjoyed this unique hike on a nice, partly cloudy day. For it being only 3 miles round trip, we went through a small section of Vista Las Palmas known for its mid-century modern homes. Continuing on over the Las Palmas Dam, we meandered to the waterfall with some bouldering involved. Then relaxed during lunch while experiencing the environs which includes the sounds coming from the waterfall and birds, and the varied views: the canyon looking east to the dam, a large part of Vista Las Palmas homes, Palm Springs and the hills behind Desert Hot Springs. It certainly was a treat to go back while these views constantly tantalizes the senses. 8

9 I hiked Oswit Canyon with the Palm Springs Great Outdoors group on the Thursday, January 5th outing led by Scott Connelly. The day was a pleasant one for an outdoor hike that included blue skies, a few clouds, occasional breeze and moderate temperature (the right mix for hiking). Our group of more than a dozen completed the four miles round trip in slightly more than three hours including a snack break. Our destination, the waterfall at the top of the canyon, proved a delight. Water was falling (as promised) and the appearance of the area was that of a little oasis (including Palms). The actual path, or paths, leading up the canyon at times proved difficult to find and there were times a wrong turn left us exploring alternative routes. The rocky footing and occasional large boulders proved challenging for some but most of the group Oswit Canyon Hike By Bond pressed on. Fortunately all were appropriately outfitted. The adventure proved to be challenging, interesting and another great opportunity to escape asphalt and concrete. Oswit Canyon is currently in the news because a petition is currently being circulated denying plans to develop the canyon base s alluvial fan bordering South Palm Canyon Drive. That portion of the vacant expanse is planned for residential property development and if allowed would serve to significantly impact what many consider to be one of Palm Springs most treasured pieces of open space. Scott, our leader, had a copy of the Save Oswit Canyon petition and asked any registered Palm Springs voters to sign. Additional information about the petition is available on their Facebook page. (www. facebook.com/groups/ /) Whitewater Preserve to Red Dome Hike By David S. This popular hiking destination for the area of Coachella Valley is known for the Whitewater River, diverse hiking trails, a fish pond, and a full-featured Ranger Station which houses educational seminars. 11 hikers enjoyed the diverse scenery while hiking to an area which has a few, unusual, large red-colored, volcanic domes. Part of this trail is on the famous PCT (Pacific Crest Trail, which actually goes from Canada to Mexico. Over the years, I ve actually met those who were on there way to try to complete the extremely challenging 2600 mile trek--amazing!). We all had a leisurely break at the area of the red domes and the Whitewater River. In that location, there were a group of 4 guys having a meal outside their large tent setup. That was a added treat. They were interesting as well. We took it easy going back to the Ranger Station, soaking in the spectacular, wide riverbed which is surrounded by high walls of the canyon (fortunately, no one got wet while crossing the river--half a foot deep in some areas). A wonderful hike/adventure, indeed. 9

10 On Saturday, January 14th, I led my first bicycle ride for members of the Great Outdoors Palm Springs chapter. There were sixteen of us who started out together and twelve continued for the entire two-hour, fourteen mile route. The ride closely followed the Palm Springs signed City Loop route. We started from the parking lot in front of the US Post Office in the Smoke Tree Village shopping center. The weather was excellent for bicycling with temperatures near the 70s. The sky was blue adorned with attractive cloud patterns. A slight breeze made the ride feel just right. Riding in the sun required minimal clothing and several appeared comfortable in their short sleeve shirts and shorts. The City Loop is a nice way to cycle through differing Palm Springs neighborhoods. The ride ended shortly after 12:00 back at our starting point in front of the Post Office. Afterwards several in the group had lunch in the popular PHO 533 Vietnamese restaurant located nearby. There are many bicycle maps and guides to routes in Palm Springs. The Palm Springs City Parks & Rec, City Loop Bike Ride By Bond Palm Springs Sustainability Commission, Palm Springs Visitor Center and many tourism businesses all provide Bond (second from left) prepares to lead the ride maps. There s also a Palm Springs Bicycle Trails website at with online maps. It s all waiting for residents and visitors alike. The key is to get out on your own, borrowed or rented bicycle and enjoy some of Coachella Valley s biking paradise. Rainbow Rocks Hike By Bond Yesterday I returned home, turned on my poolside Spa, applied Band-Aids where needed, removed wet socks and other clothing, took a shower, responded to puppy s needs and took Tessa on her two-mile afternoon walk, returned home where I exchanged wearing apparel for a bathing suit, poured myself a glass of wine and headed for the 104 degree Spa where I was able to think only good thoughts of the earlier mid-day hike and our hike leader. My late afternoon recovery followed a mid-day hike in the Whitewater Preserve to Rainbow Falls with members of the Great Outdoors club on January 28th. Our leader, Sherwood, is an experience hiker who has led previous hikes in the Preserve. We (started with twenty - three turned back) experienced the beauty of narrowing high canyon walls, spotted a Bighorn sheep looking down from high above us, cowboys controlling range cattle from a nearby reservation, lots of greenery and heavy brush on both sides of the path, and a stream bed filled to near-capacity that required crossing more than a dozen times. Some of the stream crossings are worthy candidates for tall tales at a future date. Rainbow Falls proved inaccessible for the path we were on eventually became the stream bed. Rather than wade the group decided to turn back. We ll have to try another day for a hike to the Falls. The seven or eight mile round-trip proved to be a great outing. Perfect hiking weather, blue skies and the continuous sounds of water running over rocks proved a welcome alternative to our world of asphalt and concrete. 10

11 Membership Meeting: Two for the Money - One Great Show Tuesday, February 28, :30-9:00 PM This month, the Membership Meeting will feature two speakers. Double the fun. First up will be Scott talking about the secrets of the Salton Sea. The chapter is visiting there next month and this is a great way to learn about wonders to be found in the area. This is the perfect time to visit the Salton Sea because it is peak season for migratory birds along the shore. Kayaking along the shore is one of the best ways to see all the birds. The Mecca Hills also have hidden canyons that twist and turn and narrow down to a tight slot canyon. We will get up close and personal with active geothermal features and the volcanoes along the sea. Click here for pictures of prior trips. Salvation Mountain and Slab City offer an inside perspective on unique cultures and lifestyles. Our campsites at Mecca Beach with evening campfire activities and potluck provide relaxing times for enjoying and sharing experiences with friends in the great outdoors. The second part will be presented by Brian, our new Publicity Coordinator. He is leading the charge into social media, specifically Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. He will talk about the secrets to using these platforms to keep up with what s happening with your friends at Great Outdoors. You will also learn how to join the conversation, add your own comments and the rules that we will follow in using these tools. Both presentations will be worth the price of admission: FREE. So plan to join us. A short social period with some snacks and drinks starts at 7:45 at the end of the Core Officers Meeting. The presentations will begin at 8:00.
