4 DEMYSTIFYING TERMS DEMYSTIFYING TERMS: Some key words explained, for reference Modes The different types of transport or movement e.g. walking, cycling, public transport etc Modal split The proportion of different types of transport modes that travellers use Trip generation This is a term for the number of trips that are created. Trip rate When estimating the amount of future trips, a trip rate is used to provide the average number of trips per m 2 or per building unit Cumulative assessment This is where impact analysis considers all permitted developments to understand a likely future scenario Mitigation This is an intervention designed to offset the transport impacts generated by a proposed development, for instance a contribution to new buses or to junction works Transport model A tool to analyse the effects of transport in a given area Travel plan A coordinated strategy to encourage use of sustainable forms of transport to improve health and reduce impacts on the local transport network Connectivity How well connected a place is PTAL Public Transport Accessibility Level: is a method to measure how accessible public transport is from any given location CIL (Community Infrastructure Levy) A fixed rate financial contribution to both the Local Authority and GLA (Greater London Authority) based on the amount of new development s106 (Section 106) Site-specific measures to off-set the impact of development. This is negotiated and can be financial, contributions to specific projects or provision of facilities on-site 4

25 TRANSPORT & MOVEMENT Most commented upon topic, particularly public transport A historic local problem and overriding issue for many People want a sustainable approach that balances vehicular, public transport, cycling and pedestrian. Perception it is at capacity Need a convincing and credible solution - further information and testing Improvements / mitigation alongside development, not after - joined-up discussions with TfL & Southwark Council 25

(e.g. A,4)- and continue on the reverse. Yes No A. CANADA WATER STATION Canada Water station is felt to be at capacity. There are recommendations not to travel at peak hours, gate closures due to overcrowding and heavy interchange from the Overground to Jubilee line. People aren t clear on how this can be resolved to cope with an increased population, particularly if car-use is discouraged a a Example D. BUS ROUTES & STOPS Opportunity to rationalise bus routes and stop locations is a positive. Particularly bringing bus-routes into the town centre and ensuring bus stops in both directions are close to shops and amenities. There are specific concerns from neighbours on the western boundary about the impact of a realigned Deal Porters Way as a bus route a a Example B. SURREY QUAYS STATION Comments that Surrey Quays Station isn t seen as fit to cope with more people due to the narrow platforms and bottle-necks. Suggestion for additional entrance at eastern side of Lower Road a a Example E. BUS FREQUENCY & CAPACITY There are current issues with frequency and capacity of buses, particularly the C10 and 381. Alongside improved frequency, a local shuttle-bus was suggested as a means of sustainably addressing access to the town centre a a Example C. LINE CAPACITY & DIRECTION OF TRAVEL There is broad support for the area as a daytime destination (with workers during the day). In part, providing opportunity for local people to work in the area, reducing use of public transport / roads. It was also noted that some commuter flow in the opposite peak direction to the existing could be more manageable, however there were concerns about the overall line capacity a a Example F. RIVER-USE Improvements to the river service are considered an opportunity to help address any transport issues arising from an increased population. Increased frequency, reduced cost and potential for an additional / new Rotherhithe pier were all suggested a a Example 26
