2 From THE SUPER S DESK Hello to all Turkey Creek Division members. Fellow Model Railroaders. The winter solstice holidays (Christmas and New Year s Day) are over. I ve taken the outside lights down, and by the time you read this column the remaining Christmas decorations should be down and stored. Now, it s time to get those model railroad projects in full gear. I have a couple of active projects and several projects I wish to start. The first active project is that I volunteered to revise the NMRA Data Sheet D2B.1 Geology and Soils. NMRA data sheets provide a source of information about railroads and modeling. However, as my friend, Philip Sharp, discovered many of the data sheets are in need revision. The figures in the Geology and Soils data sheet are unreadable and the text needs improvement. Knowing that I was a geologist, Philip asked if I would do the revision and I agreed. The other ongoing project is the construction of a new modular HO-scale model railroad for the Lawrence Model Railroad Club (LMRR). LMRR had two modular model railroads. For our aging club members, the existing model railroads were getting more cumbersome to transport, set up, and take down. Additionally, LMRR is hoping to attract new members by demonstrating they are an active club. At this point it should be obvious that the theme for this month is volunteering. One of the things that I ve always been impressed about Turkey Creek Division is the number of volunteers we have. I think that speaks volumes of good for our organization. I admit that I was reluctant to become Superintendent; however, I have already received a great deal of assistance from numerous members. The division has numerous opportunities for volunteering this year. The Turkey Creek Train Show and Swap Meet will return this year and will need people to aid in planning, to present clinics, to open their model railroads for tours, and to assist at the show itself. Please consider volunteering for Turkey Creek Train Show. I would like to thank all the Turkey Creek Division volunteers for John Fales, Jr. did a great job as Superintendent. Steve McKee, Bill Humenczuk and other officers, Louis Seibel, Larry Diehl, Sheldon Levy, members that served on committees, and members that stepped forward to present clinics deserve our thanks. The January meeting of Turkey Creek Division will feature a clinic by Kent Hurley on 3-D Printing. Kent told me that it will be a general talk about the topic. I know that I have an interest in 3-D printing and would like to learn more. Please plan on attending. The meeting will be back in the meeting room we regularly use at Lakeview Village Eastside Terrace. I hope to see you there. Gregory Ohlmacher Superintendent, Turkey Creek Division, NMRA 2 Page January 2019 Lightning Slinger opbd

Our outgoing Superintendent John Fales called the meeting to order. We had some great food like we always do which makes it hard to lose weight for some of us. Dan Munson went thru how he shoots those great shots of people s layouts. He showed us what to do and not what to do. He showed up a little about photo shop and also how to take a series of shots and then combine them, so we have a depth of field using Helicon Focus, so we don t have some things in focus and some not in focus. Fixed base using what he calls magic bean. Its Pinto beans in a zip lock baggy. He said Pinto beans are best because the are not smooth and will hold the camera still while shooting those shots for the Helicon Focus. He has a lot of knowledge on the subject and I m sure he will be developed new methods of shooting photos as time goes on and he get even more experience shooting the photo layouts for the conventions. He just got back from Salt Lake City where the NMRA convention is going to be in 2019 and I m sure these shots will show up in some of the Magazines Steve Priest puts out. One trick I forgot to ask him about, how he keeps the plastic models from melting when he is using 4000 watts of lighting. I hope you all had a great x-mas and happy new year, Steve PS, I think Bart Morneau MMR is going to have another class to help us get to our MMR goals maybe around Feb. 2, 2019 but he will let us know for sure. This comes from the chat room Modelrailroadsofsouthcalif I use typically use a wash on a freight car body as Step Two in the weathering process after I've sprayed a dulling coat on the model. And when it comes to bush-applied washes I've used a lot of different techniques and liked all I've tried because each gives a slightly different result. I've used artists' oils, artists' water mixable oils, diluted acrylic paints, gouaches (thank you, Michael Gross) and weathering powders dissolved in alcohol. Now I have another weathering tool: Vallejo Model Washes. These washes are used by military modelers and come in several shades: What I like about these washes is that they are applied straight from the bottle and dry fairly quickly. The application follows the same general steps as other washes, that is, apply the wash with a soft wide brush and remove the pooled excess (from areas such as grab irons and ladders) with a dry, smaller soft brush. If you are satisfied with the results you can stop right there. I usually go on to weather the car further with Pan Pastels or Bragdon powders and maybe artists pencils. EtflhC Lightning Slinger January Page

4 Below are photos of three car bodies after the application of a different wash to each. I think the car at the bottom looks like so many steam era boxcars I've seen and could go on the layout as is. But I will do additional work. If you have used Vallejo Model Washes please share your experience. Bob Chaparro These guys have some great ideas they post on their chat room. Moderator Here is some more news that you might have already heard about by the time you get this. Steve Priest is leaving the Magazine bussiness and is moving to Tennessee and going to work for Scale Trains model company. I hear his house is already on the market Please see the following two announcements on facebook for the details: Page January 2019 Lightning Slinger opbd
