2 From THE SUPER S DESK Hello to all Turkey Creek Division members. Wow, December is here, and another year is winding down. Hard to believe that 2019 is just around the corner in another two weeks. I hope everyone is prepared for the holidays and that you all have a wonderful time with friends and family. As I mentioned in last month s Lightning Slinger, during the holiday season, we are fortunate to have a truly wonderful collection of trains on display at the Union Station. Some of our Turkey Creek members are intimately involved in this Holiday display of model and toy trains of all scales and sizes. If you have not seen this collection, make some time in your schedule to visit. Don t forget to take your kids, grandkids and even great-grandkids along. Tell your friends and neighbors! I promise you and they will be amazed! Thanks to Greg Ohlmacher who was elected as the new Superintendent for His service will be greatly appreciated! I hope you will all consider volunteering to present a clinic for one of our meetings. I think this is one of the most difficult parts of this job as we all appreciate a great clinic. Thanks to Bill Humenczuk our Paymaster for another term and to Steve McKee, serving another term as Clerk. I am certain all three will do a great job serving the Turkey Creek Division! We will close out the year with our annual Holiday Party and a great clinic. Dan Munson will be presenting a clinic on Model Railroad Photography. This should be fun as he will show us how to get great photos of our layouts, dioramas, structures, cars, motive power, scenery and most everything related to our hobby. Dan does a wonderful job with his clinics and has presented at many meets regionally and nationally. Please note this month s meeting will not be in our usual location. This month only, we will meet in the Tree Top Room, on the 5 th floor, of the South Ridge Building at Lakeview Village. Please look for a map elsewhere in this issue of the Lightning Slinger. The building is always locked to there will be someone to open the door on the ground level for you. Please don t be late. If you arrive and the door is locked, and no one is there to open it, please call my cell number Also, please bring some holiday goodies to share with the group. Cake, cookies, candy, pie, anything that you would like to share! I look forward to seeing all of you at the meeting on Tuesday evening. It s going to be a great clinic and great fellowship! Lastly, I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as your Division Superintendent this past year. I hope you have all enjoyed the year too! Thanks to everyone who helped me navigate the jobs associated with the position and a huge thank you to everyone who helped by presenting clinics and organizing and running the Make and Take! They were all outstanding! Thanks also to everyone who helped at the NMRA Convention. You helped make our community shine and people all over the world are still talking about that meeting. The bar is set very high for Salt Lake City! John 2 Page December 2018 Lightning Slinger opbd

The AP classes started again Saturday Dec 1 at Brad s. Contact Brad if you are interested in doing this in the future. His is bradmorneau@gmail.com let him know if you are interested. There is limited seating so let him know in advance if you re interested. I think we plan to continue this for while as long as he and I have the time free. Larry Diehl took orders and money for the kits from Wild West Models. They have great laser cut kits that fit together perfectly. Check out the web page at or just google Wild West Models. If you model O scale look on e-bay for Hallmark Keepsake car ornaments. They are within 6 scale inches of 1/48 and you can find them on e-bay. There is a small hook you can twist and pull and its out. Then just fill in the small hole and you have a great car. They cover all time periods. Something new I discovered about these is that you have to type in the word TRUCKS instead of cars if you want to find the trucks, for some reason I didn t think of that till last week and they do have in entire series on trucks also. I ve only ran across 1 car and one truck that are oversize like 1/43. Bret Overholtzer clinic on CAST A GIANT SHADOW went very well and showed you don t have to have a giant layout to do operations. It just needs to be well planned so you have industries that make sense. You can have a smaller layout and use flats instead of full size buildings. Miles Hale has done a clinic on that showing how to do O scale buildings and that method would work for any scale. It was nice to have a clinic on something different that we haven t really touched on before and Bret is very well informed on this subject. Shelly will also be sending out map of where the Holiday party is, W 92 St. on the 5 th floor. Steve McKee Clerk Turkey Creek Division EtflhC Lightning Slinger December Page

7 Achievement Program Article for the Lightning Slinger November 2018 Greetings fellow modelers! As you know, we have been continuing the AP work sessions. Our last session was very productive! I was impressed with the work done on the various cars! So, we are about to embark on the next set of certificates, Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering. These two certificates complement each other and as such are convenient to work on simultaneously (although you certainly don t have to). I am planning to start going over these at my home on December 1st (Saturday). Please me at bradmorneau@gmail.com if you re interested in joining us! Additionally, if you missed out on the Cars certificate, it s never too late to start! Everyone works at their own speed, so if you re interested drop me an ! Hope to see you there! 14 From the Superintendent Elect Clinics Needed One of the most important items for maintaining attendance and activity in Turkey Creek is to have meetings and a convention with good clinics. Currently, I do not have a list of potential clinics for next year. Therefore, I am making a request that members interested in presenting a clinic contact me. Every month, I will be making a request for clinics until I have enough clinics to fill next year s schedule. Although, I will accept clinics on all model railroad topics, I will be making suggestions for clinics each month. Over the year, I would like to see clinics cover a variety of topics. For January, my suggestion is model railroad electronics and computers. Here are a few suggestions: Using laptop or desktop computer to run trains and operate your model railroad. This might include software needs and interfacing with DCC systems. Advanced decoder programming. I can set long and short address, make consists, and adjust speed tables. However, when I go into Decoder Pro, I see lots of items that I don t touch. What do these parameters do? Layout Command Control (LCC). Just about anything on LCC. These are only suggestions. If you have the urge to give a clinic in January on a different topic, let me know. My contact information is as follows: (785) (cell) and gcohlmac@sunflower.com ( ). I want to thank those that have given clinics in the past and encourage others to give a clinic. I hope to see you at future meetings. Gregory Ohlmacher Superintendent Elect Gregory (Greg) Ohlmacher Bio I thought it was interesting that the first thing Louis asked me for after I was elected superintendent was a bio to post in the Lightning Slinger. First the boring stuff: I grew up in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC. I have a bachelor s degree from the University of Maryland and a PhD from Purdue University. My area of expertise is engineering geology, specifically geologic hazards (landslides, earthquakes, karst, and so on). I retired from Black & Veatch almost two years ago. Prior to the ten years I spent with B&V, I worked at the Kansas Geological Survey, and taught at two universities. Like many of us, my dad was responsible for getting me involved with model railroading. He had a HO-scale model railroad in the garage, but by the time I was 8, he had dissembled it. It was about this time that an American Flyer set showed up one Christmas. It was followed by a HO-scale set a few years later. As a teenager, I loved running trains and slot cars, and building models of anything. I started my current model railroad in my mid-twenties. My dad had seen me reading model railroad books and sketching layout plans. I came home from work one day and he had built the benchwork for a 4-foot by 8-foot layout. Other than the benchwork, I ve done all the other work on the model railroad. Today, my model railroad is no bigger than the benchwork my father built. As a modeler, I consider myself a tinkerer. I read model railroad magazines and attend clinics. If I see something I like, I go home and try it. As a model railroader, I m an expert at nothing. My model railroad is HO-scale and is freelanced. For several years, I ve called it the Maryland Mountain Railroad. It is loosely based on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in western Maryland and adjacent West Virginia. Originally, I had the era set around 1980, with a mixture of B&O and Chessie System equipment. Most of the Chessie System equipment has been retired. The model railroad is almost completely sceniced and runs with few derailments. Several years ago, I converted it to DCC. I ve installed sound decoders in several diesel locomotives. All the turnouts have Tortoise switch machines and frog juicers. On the negative side, the model railroad has a design flaw that renders it an operations nightmare. I told myself that when I retired, I d build a new model railroad that s more operations friendly. However, I haven t started it yet. 14 Page December 2018 Lightning Slinger opbd
