2 From THE SUPER S DESK Hello to all Turkey Creek Division members Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Hopeful that you all were able to enjoy a relaxing holiday. We are truly blessed to live in such an amazing community, and country. We are also lucky, and I am thankful for the friends I have made while being involved in this amazing hobby of model railroading. It is fun experiencing all this hobby has to offer and to be able to share this enjoyment with friends within the hobby but also with family., friends and sometimes with strangers new to the hobby or just learning what this hobby is all about. I am certain most of you are aware that during the holiday season, we are fortunate to have a truly wonderful collection of trains on display at the Union Station. Some of our Turkey Creek members are intimately involved in this Holiday display of model and toy trains of all scales and sizes. If you have not seen this collection, make some time in your schedule to visit. Don t forget to take your kids, grandkids and even greatgrandkids along. I promise you will be amazed! This month we will be electing officers for the coming year. Nominations are accepted from the floor and we also have three individuals who have indicated a willingness to serve through the coming year. Running for the position of Superintendent is Greg Ohlmacher, running for Paymaster is Bill Humenczuk, running for the position of Clerk is Steve McKee. Both Bill and Steve have held their respective positions for several terms and their dedication is greatly appreciated and they have done a great job. Thanks to Greg for volunteering to step up and into the role of Superintendent. We will close out the year with two great clinics. Stay tuned for next month s Lightning Slinger for details on our Holiday meeting. For now, this coming Tuesday evening will be a very interesting and thought-provoking clinic presented by Bret Overholtzer. Following is Bret s clinic description: CAST A GIANT SHADOW! Ohlmacher Deriving Maximum Operating Enjoyment from a Smal(ish) Layout 1. Do you need an Uber-layout to enjoy operations? We say, "NAY!" Using his own N-scale layout, the MIGHTY MKT, Bret will discuss various aspects of model railroad operations and how to maximize operational enjoyment on a less-than-huge layout. This wide-ranging and entertaining stream-of-consciousness presentation will be useful to modelers with existing layouts as well as to those contemplating a new space-constrained layout. Topics will include: The parable of the elephant Why model railroading operations is like owning a sailboat Big layout, little...scale? Layout envy and how to overcome it An in-depth discussion of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's concept of Flow and how it applies to model railroad operations Cornerstones of Layout Design The paradigm of asymptotic layout construction The Kübler-Ross model - the five stages of grieving as applied to basement layouts Economics of layout construction in a flat-world society. What it takes to become an Elite Operator The Tri-Lateral Commission: myth vs reality. I look forward to seeing all of you at the meeting on Tuesday evening. It s going to be a great clinic! Kansas City Southern announced today its schedule for the 18th annual Holiday Express train, which will stop in 22 communities in eight states on 27 dates. At each stop, visitors can board the train, visit with Santa and his elves and tour the inside of three cars of the festive six-car train. Each event is free and open to the public. In addition to free, public events, KCS Holiday Express has a charitable component. Over the past 17 years, the project has raised well over $2 million to purchase gift cards, which are donated to The Salvation Army at each scheduled stop. These gift cards are used to purchase warm clothing and other necessities for children in need in the local community. KCS is proud to continue this long-standing tradition of bringing joy to communities throughout our network with the Holiday Express train, said KCS President and Chief Executive Officer Patrick J. Ottensmeyer. This project brings people together, helps build relationships in the community and supports our corporate vision and values. Anyone interested in making a tax-deductible contribution to the 2018 KCS Holiday Express fundraising campaign may do so by visiting > Corporate Responsibility > Holiday Express or by clicking here. The campaign will close Oct. 31. The KCS Holiday Express was built on the tradition of the Santa Train, which ran on a segment of the network bought by KCS in In 2000, a group of warm-hearted KCS employees noticed that the Santa Train was the only Christmas some kids had, and that some kids did not have essential items like coats, hats and gloves, so they committed to elevating the project. In 2001, volunteers transformed are tired freight train to the experience that communities throughout KCS' U.S. service territory enjoy today. Led by KCS Southern Belle business train, the Holiday Express train includes a smiling tank car Rudy ; a flat car carrying Santa s sleigh, reindeer and a miniature village; a gingerbread boxcar; an elves workshop; the reindeer stable; and a little red caboose. Each car is dressed in lights. As you know, we have been continuing the AP work sessions. Our last session was very productive! I was impressed with the work done on the various cars! So, we are about to embark on the next set of certificates, Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering. These two certificates complement each other and as such are convenient to work on simultaneously (although you certainly don t have to). I am planning to start going over these at my home on December 1st (Saturday). Please me at bradmorneau@gmail.com if you re interested in joining us! Additionally, if you missed out on the Cars certificate, it s never too late to start! Everyone works at their own speed, so if you re interested drop me an ! Hope to see you there!
