8 Model Railroads Go To War by Bernard Kempinski Published by Kalmbach Books c pages $19.99 By now you're probably sensing a trend in the subject of the railroad books I read and review! This book is a typical large format Kalmbach publication that includes their usual excellent photos and illustrations. Mr. Kempinski provides both prototype history and modeling examples. The book begins with a brief history of railroads at war that interestingly follows the same outline as that in Engines of War reviewed separately. As might be expected, the first war to be modeled is the American Civil War. The book provides background information on the prototype, proposed track plans, figure conversions and lots of model pictures of his own and other model railroads for both the U.S. Military Railroad operations in Virginia and the "Cracker Line" through Kentucky and Tennessee, both of which would make an excellent basis for a model railroad. I especially enjoyed the photos of the model railroads in this section of the book, in part because this is the era I am modeling but I also discovered I paint figures for one of the model railroaders whose layout is shown. Beyond the Civil War subject matter, I personally enjoyed the chapter on Railroad Guns and Armored Trains, which is another interest of mine. There are some excellent models shown in this section. My only regret is that it wasn't bigger with more models! World War I and those 60cm narrow gauge railroads are also covered. The author provides more prototype and model photos along with a track plan for a layout based on the operations around Cambria in This section also includes methods to create camouflage netting, 8 Page January 2016 Lightning Slinger opbd sand bags and battle damaged structures along with modeling light narrow gauge lines. The chapters on World War II have proposed layouts based on both a U. S. operation carrying supplies from "the arsenal of democracy" for shipment overseas to a layout based on one of those overseas bases, the French port of Cherbourg, "Gateway to France" and one of the major ports where material from the U. S. was unloaded from Liberty ships to railroads headed for the front lines. As with all the sections in the book the models and the photographs of the models are excellent. I once thought about a World War II era layout until the Civil War bug bit too deep. The "modern" section of the book includes a layout plan based on rail loading and unloading operations at Ft. Hood (but could just as easily be used to represent rail operations at Ft. Riley if you want to model closer to home). The other layout I had never thought of is based on the rail operations used to move the rockets at Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral Florida. That would be a very unique model railroad! Whether you are interested in model railroads or model railroads at war, there are some excellent suggestions and models in this book and well worth reading. if you are interested in Civil War model railroading, the author also hosts a blog that is very interesting and informative on both the prototype and modeling the era. 9 Engines of War: How Wars Were Lost & Won on the Railways by Christian Wolmar Publisher: PublicAffairs, New York c pages Railroads have been a tool of war almost from their beginning. This book looks at the effect of railroads both strategically and tactically on warfare from their first use to now. The first known direct use of a railroad to support a military operation was at the siege of Sevastopol by the French and British during the Crimean War. While it was a horse or mule railway, the use of this railroad to bring supplies to Sevastopol from the Crimean port of Balaklava was the first. While small potatoes compared to railroad operations in the future, without this line it is likely the siege would have failed due to the lack of supplies on the front lines of the siege. The 300 tons daily delivered by this small line were vital. From this modest beginning, railroads came into their own just a couple of years later with the start of the American Civil War. In the chapter "Slavery Loses Out to the Iron Road", the author covers the huge impact that railroads had on war. For the first time huge armies numbering hundreds of thousands of men were supplied and kept in the field due to the railroad supply lines that brought everything from food and ammunition to new recruits. Specifically built hospital trains were used for the first time. Also for the first time massive strategic movements were made using the railroads. When the Confederates shifted Longstreet's corps from Virginia to Tennessee just in time to turn the tide at the battle of Chickamauga, the Union quickly countered by shifting the Eleventh and Twelfth corps under the command of Hooker from northern Virginia to Chattanooga in time to defeat the Confederates at the battle of Chattanooga. While the Union had more railroad lines than the Confederates, both sides were vitally dependent on the railroads for support. The siege and fall of Petersburg, Virginia was fought over Lee's last remaining railroad supply line to Richmond. When it fell, so did Richmond. The Union cavalry's capture of the last supply train attempting to reach the Army of Northern Virginia resulted in the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. What made the Union efforts successful was the formation of the United States Military Railroad organization and it's dynamic field operations officer, Herman Haupt. While many of the future features of railroads supporting war were born in the Civil War, the epitome of these operations came during World War I. Personally I found this to be some of the most interesting information in the book. While some authors claim that the domino effect of declarations of war in August 1914 (and so excellently described in The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman) were driven by the mobilization plans and trains schedules of France, Germany and Russia Mr. Wolmar doesn't give the train schedules quite that much weight. They were important, but not the only factor. In the fifty years since the Crimean war where railroads played no part in mobilization now, just in the German mobilization, it expanded to three million soldiers and 11,000 trains in just the first two weeks. While the destruction of railroads in Belgium that delayed the first German advance and the enormous lack of railroads in Russia were significant factors, it was the trench railroads that kept the war going. Think the U. S. had lots of narrow gauge railroads? There were thousands of miles on both sides of the trench lines in northern Europe. Most were 60cm gauge and they were everywhere and followed the front lines closely. For example "it took only sixty hours after Passchendaele had been occupied for a light railway to be operating right into the village, bringing up stores and taking back wounded." In the 1930's the industrial countries jumped into the age of the gasoline powered motor vehicle, but in World War II it was still the railroads that were the strategic trump card. None of the European powers (or the U. S. for that matter) were selfsufficient in oil. What oil was available was sucked up in all the new tactical weapons from airplanes to tanks to aircraft carriers and submarines. Railroads used coal and it was available in abundance. Even after the Allies invasion at Normandy, and despite the best efforts or truck operations like the Red Ball Express, it was still the reconstruction of the rail lines that determined the pace of the movement of the Allies. While most have heard of the U. S. Lend/Lease program that sent supplies by convoys to Russia, even more tanks, trucks, planes and supplies were provided to Russia by railroads running through Iran and operated by the U. S. and England. (I once had dinner with my Dad, Jim Kehn a railroad engineer friend of mine from Ohio and the late Bob Richardson, one of the founders of the Colorado Railroad Museum. Bob served in World War II on the railroad through Iran and it was fascinating listening to him talk about his experiences there during the war.) The book concludes with the efforts of England, the Soviet Union and the U. S. to put strategic nuclear missiles on railroad cars and keep them constantly in motion rolling around the country to prevent their location from being known. The intent was to prevent these missiles from being targeted in fixed locations and always providing the threat of a counter strike if an attempt was made to knock fixed missile bunkers in a first strike. The U. S. actually built some of these cars during the Reagan administration but they were eventually removed from service when it was determined the possibility of a nuclear accident caused by a train wreck outweighed the second strike potential. One of these U. S. cars is on display at the U. S. Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson Airbase in Dayton, Ohio. If you are interested in the effect of railroads in war and the history of their effect, this is a very interesting book, well paced and easy to read. I'm not sure if your library has this book, but it should be available through Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Mr. Wolmar is also the author of Blood, Iron & Gold, a history of railroad construction, also an interesting book possibly a future review. Marty Vaughn MMR EtflhC Lightning Slinger January 2016

10 December 20, 2015 Director s Report - December 2015 Turkey Creek Our year is ending with a flurry. Turkey Creek voted our new officers who are: Ray Brown - Superintendent Bill Humenczk - Paymaster Louis Seibel - Clerk We are in the fast and furious times of preparing for our up and coming Make & Take Clinic in January. We are experiencing good participation with 28 model kits ordered, representing N, HO, S and scales. This activity sparks a lot of interest in our group. We have just set a date for our Annual Convention to be Saturday, July 23, We expect to have a train show with vendors, clinics, door prizes, model contest and food snacks. We have increased the stakes for winning the model contest offering a brass lantern and a John Winfield print as Best of Show and Highest Merit Judging Score. It always seems that recognition through physical awards, gift certificates, items to winner and plaques increases the number of contest entries. We lost two great "operation layouts" with Floyd Brittian, MMR and Gary Hankins, MMR, both moving to new housing. Floyd is constructing a new smaller switching layout, hopefully operational in Gary Hankins is dreaming and planning for his new layout, much smaller, hoping to start construction early in 2016 when he moves to his new home. Can't wait! Both are great gentlemen who enjoy the hobby. Miles & Fran Hale, MMR's, have got their new indoor On3O layout operating, working on scenery, Stephen Priest, MMR has got the "Branch Line" operational on his new St. Louis Division of the Santa Fe, a lot more to go, but Stephen continues to progress with a dedicated group of workers, pretty rapidly! Mark Juett s L&N continues progress with portions coming on-line, then off-line (!) weekly. Pat Harriman, MMR has "quietly" nearly completed his new On3O Oregon Coast Mining & Timber Co. RR featured in an 11 page spread in December 2015's "NMRA Magazine", plus the cover page!!! Alan Saatkamp, MMR is nearly complete with his new PGR layout hosting several operating sessions in preparation of the upcoming huge "Prairie Rail" operations event in February. Ken Jenkins has started layout operations on his Rock Island RR Kansas portion of grain transport, working out operational issues. Ken is rebuilding his "staging" to provide better train management. Larry Alfred, MMR is working hard on his O scale and On3 layout with significant progress on the backdrop, mountain scenery and bench work finish. Looks like Colorado! Paul Evans is progressing with his layout building new industries. I'm sure there are other layouts making significant progress, but, I'm just not aware of everyone's work. Huge congratulations to all these layout owners. Ron Morse, MMR, continues to expand his Morse Productions model kit offerings of well detailed "paper buildings", with a kit of his award winning "Vicki Jo Mine" published in Narrow Gauge Gazette. One of our members, Kent Hurley, continues to lead our group with 3D modeling. Kent has been pioneering efficient means and methods to accomplish 3D printing. This process sure looks to be a strong future in modeling. Kent continues to master process and computer details in the "Sketch-Up" program and printers to efficiently produce small detail parts for all scales. Our Turkey Creek Guru! We lost several "new" members from our roster who signed up as 6 month memberships to meet the 2014 National Narrow Gauge Convention needs, who have elected not to continue with NMRA. We will attempt to retrieve those persons with direct solicitation letters and personal follow-up. We continue to have visitors attend meetings. They are primarily friends of current members. We do our best in showing them an interesting experience and the closest member discusses the membership possibilities. We could possibly do more in follow-up looks to be a busy year. Our Make & Take Clinic, our Modeling Challenges meeting with awards, and our Turkey Creek annual convention/train show are our highlights. The Turkey Creek group continues to be very interested in final disposition of the new rules and operational aspects of National initiative to bring everyone under a "master 501(c)3" IRS tax status. Turkey Creek is currently a "501(c)3" in good standing. All information and correspondence relative to these issues that McOR can provide, will be appreciated so I can keep our group informed. Sincerely, Larry W. Diehl Turkey Creek Division Director pc: Ray Brown, Superintendent Lightning Slinger 10 Page January 2016 Lightning Slinger opbd

11 Obituary for Laurence C. Keeler LAURENCE CARVER KEELER Laurence Carver ( Larry ) Keeler was born on August 21, 1929 in Evanston, Illinois and died on January 21, Larry was the eldest child of Joseph Frank Keeler and Esther Grace (McKibbin) Keeler. He spent his early years in a log cabin built by his father in northern Wisconsin along with his only sibling, Dorothy (now Hash), of Wylie, Texas. Larry has the not-so-unique honor of descent from the Mayflower pilgrim group. His mother belonged to the family of John Carver, the first governor of the Plymouth colony. Every generation of her family since 1624 has had a son with the middle name of Carver. The family moved to Milwaukee in the early years of World War II where his father found work as a janitor in a large apartment building before becoming the operator of a small trucking line. Larry did many different kinds of odd jobs during his teen years to earn money, sometimes more interesting than profitable, and earned his pilot s license when he was 16 years old. He spent eight years as a fireman and engineer on the Milwaukee Railroad. This was followed by a job with General Electric which necessitated a move to the Dallas, Texas area where he covered five states as a traveling industrial x-ray technician serving large industrial manufacturing companies and government contractors. While eating lunch one fall day in Shreveport, Louisiana he spied a certain young lady named Patsy Braswell of Oak Grove, Louisiana who he claims to have been instantly smitten with. He began an ardent pursuit across a thousand miles of air, land and unfriendly locals before closing the deal on the match he always told friends was the best he ever made. They were married 56 years. Marriage and the birth of their daughter Vivian soon followed. In 1964 they moved to Kansas City where he worked with Greb X-Ray Co. for nearly 30 years, the last 27 as pilot of the company plane. In 1995 he was given the opportunity to return to his first love, railroading. He and Pat moved to Pierre, South Dakota where he worked six years as conductor and locomotive engineer for the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad. He loved working for the railroad and on retirement at age 72 his employer had made and presented to him as a farewell gift a specially built-to-scale train car carrying his name and company work number, taken as a sign of respect for his dedication and skill. He always considered himself the luckiest of men in that he got to indulge himself in two careers, trains and planes that other men [boys] envied. He and Pat returned to Overland Park in September, 2001, to live at Metcalfe West Condominium. One of Larry s lifelong interests and loves was music. He taught himself to play guitar and was pretty good at it; he also did a creditable job on the clarinet, bassoon and piano. He had a good - often described as mellow or smooth - singing voice some said was similar to Jim Reeves, and was a favorite in the jamming groups of country-western entertainers around Kansas City. Another interest was model railroading. The basement of his Overland Park home was filled with an elaborate model railroad he had designed and built. It was a frequent gathering place for the local model railroading community and attracted visitors from around the world. He developed many friendships there that have lasted decades. Larry is survived by his wife Patsy of the home, daughter Vivian and her husband Mark Lindgren, of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, and their children, Laura and Michael. A celebration of Larry s life will be held on Monday, January 25, 2016, at 10 a.m. at the Johnson County Funeral Chapel, Metcalf, Overland Park, followed by a committal service in the Mausoleum room. Suggestions for memorial contributions in his remembrance are Crossroads Hospice of Kansas City and Wayside Waifs, EtflhC Lightning Slinger January 2016
