1 COMMODORE S COMMENTS Fall is in full swing. Each day, the boats in the marina are becoming fewer and the boat yards are getting busier with haul outs and winterization. As we say good-bye to the boating season, I hope everyone had a great summer. The second half of September started with Tuesday Madness at the Bavarian Bierhaus in Glendale where our members sampled German beers, had a hearty meal and started to finalize plans for a Caribbean cruise in late January. There are still plenty of cabins available for anyone interested in joining us. Departure will be on January 28 th from Fort Lauderdale on Princess Cruises see last month s Runabouter for details. The MBC 60 th Anniversary Celebration was a great success. It started with luncheon at Aliota s that included an awesome cake. From there, we trekked to Milwaukee and a history/architectural cruise aboard the Vista King. After disembarking, the hunt was on for a watering hole that could accommodate 30 people without reservations at 6:00 PM on a Saturday evening. Luck would have it Russ found the Hilton Garden Inn a short walk from the dock and a nearly empty bar. I would like to send out a special thanks to Mary Berg and Connie Heyden for leading the 60 th Celebration committee. Many miles were traveled to find just the right locale and hours spent making all the arrangements. We will start this month with Monday Madness on October 16 th -- look for details in this month s Runabouter. It will be followed by the monthly MBC meeting at the Wauwatosa Lions Club on Thursday Oct 19 th. This meeting will be a ton of fun. It starts with a chili dump and finishes with our annual trivia contest hosted by Craig and Kim Heser. Soooooo bring a quart of your best chili and put on your thinking caps. 2 SEAFARING WORDS IN EVERYDAY SPEECH Close Quarters immediate contact In nautical lingo, close quarters were wooden barriers erected across the decks of merchant ships. Fitted with apertures (loopholes) through which small arms could be fired, close quarters afforded a place of protection or retreat when the ship was boarded by pirates. In its colloquial application ashore, close quarters refers to something done hand-to-hand or at close range. The expression also denotes an attitude of intense scrutiny, as in coming into close quarters with one's own conscience or values. Windfall...good luck in the form of an unexpected acquisition In medieval times, trees could not be cut down in England on tracts of land specified as timber reserves for shipping, a critical national interest. 3 September Monday Madness At The Bavarian Bier Haus September 18th A jovial group of MBC ers gathered in the late afternoon of the 18 th to enjoy the festive atmosphere, good food and ample beer at the Bavarian Bier Haus in Glendale. Schnitzels and sausages, dunkels and ales and an ample supply of gemutlichkeit was the order of the evening. 4 MBC PICNIC MBC Picnic September 2nd Around 40 people attended the annual MBC picnic at FoxBrook Park in Brookfield on September 2nd. The day started out with members playing horseshoes and the quarter game or just visiting with friends. Delicious appetizers were enjoyed by all. Just when the corn was ready to eat, a thunderstorm came through. The storm didn't stop the party. Members still went ahead and grilled their meat in the rain. Members continued to party until about 7 P.M. The annual picnic was a successful event again this year! 9 MBC Celebrates 60 Years The summer weather held out for our 60 th Anniversary Party on Saturday, September 23 rd. Drinks and a luncheon were held at Alioto s and 33 members attended the lunch. Danowski s joined the group for cocktails, but were on dog duty and had to tend to their chores while the rest enjoyed a great meal. The Schneckenberg s brought a cake for dessert they sure know how to bake!! Following the luncheon, the group made its way to downtown Milwaukee, and a ride on the Vista King. Twenty-five members took part in the history and architectural tour of Milwaukee. We even learned the weather poem related to the light on top of the WE Energies building. After the boat ride, we attempted to catch a drink at the Swing-in Door, on Michigan Street. Apparently, others had the same idea. Open Doors Milwaukee was in progress and downtown was bustling. There was no room in the place for a large group. Beverages were found at the Hilton Garden Inn, where the single bar tender learned the meaning of thirsty and hustle.
