General Meeting/Steak Fry The start of boating season: the best time of the year. We can be full of optimism and fun because the boating is just starting and we are looking forward to having all season to enjoy it. During the last couple boating seasons, Jim Barrett has been encouraging us to let everybody know where we are going as we head out cruising. Let s try something different this year. When you get ready to head out on the water and you want company, just send an (or tell your friends to send an ) to members@pugetsoundyc.org with your dates and destinations. Jodie and I went to the Fox Island Yacht Club Commodore s Ball on 4/25/04. They have such a beautiful setting, an almost new clubhouse, and a great bunch of people. They interestingly have a 150 member cap on their membership, which seems to work for them. They have a similar dues and fee schedule as we do. We didn t talk to anybody who had a bot larger than 32 feet. Most of the homes have buoys and they can be somewhat exposed, so most of the boats are smaller. We had a captivating conversation with their treasurer. They built their clubhouse and basically paid cash for it by issuing bonds to their members. The treasurer was trying to do what our club is accomplishing right now; preparing for the future. Their club is in an inlet that is going to need a major dredging, but he can t get them to think about that specific large project that is coming up without a planning project. Thankfully, we are nearing the end of the futures planning process and we have the five year plan coming up in May or June. We are institutionalizing the five year plan, so that every year there will be a plan out for five years even though there may be some adjustments. In addition, we are preparing to meet the needs of the younger members by finding interesting and fun activities. We ve go some great boating season cruises coming up. Let s all go out and support them. First is Des Moines, then Oak Harbor, Bell Harbor Mariner s cruise, and Poulsbo. Some are short distance cruises that don t take a lot of fuel in these high fuel cost days. Thanks to our planners, we have the reservations for these locations while all the other clubs will be scrambling to get slips near Seattle. Let s take advantage of our great foresight and sign up. 2 May 2004 Page 2 Th e VICE COMMODORE S REPORT PAT HANSEN A BIG THANK YOU to Les and Donna Alluisi, Barry and Marcia Ellingson, Neil and Laurence Krueger, Larry and Cristie Newton, and Ellen Starks for all their work at the Hat Island Work Party on April 3 rd. We are all looking forward to a great boating season and Hat Island is the perfect place as a destination, or a stop going North or South for all of our Club members and now it is all spruced up. Another BIG THANK YOU to everyone who turned out for the Spring Work Party at PSYC on April 24 th. Kevin Carlson helped put the To Do list together and as usual - the garden is weeded and planted, the lawn mowed and edged, windows washed, paint touched up, and maintenance performed on the electrical stanchions on the dock. The Club is all polished up and ready for Opening Day and the formal start of Boating Season. The rentals are going extremely well with the daily morning rental by the Water s Edge group, Pasta Freska booking several dates for dinners, business meetings, and birthday parties. We are now getting repeat renters, which is very good for the Club and for our renters. If you have no plans for the 4 th of July we will be having an informal unplanned get together on the dock. The Bar-B-Qs will be available tables and chairs set out so come by boat or car and bring your family and friends and come join us. If you have not been to the Club on the 4 th of July you have missed a great time. Happy Boating Reminder!! Beginning April 1st, 2004 the club is rented every day 365 days a year from 6:30 am 8:00 am. Please make sure nothing is left in the downstairs hall or in the upstairs meeting room overnight. 3 May 2004 Page 3 Pretty Sassy Yachty Chicks Red Hat Ladies Sunday, April 25 th, eleven Red Hat Ladies met for wonderful brunch at Ivar s. We were rather noticeable in all our Red Hat finery and received lots of attention from the restaurant employees and other customer s. One lady from Boston even took our picture. Our waitress wanted to join our lively, colorful group but we had to deny her request on the grounds that it would be at least 25 years before she would be old enough. Our next giggles and good food gathering will be Mon. May 24 th at Peggy Allen s home. We are going to start our potluck around 6:30 and then watch the movie Calendar Girls. If you haven t had a chance to join us yet please join us. The only requirement is a Red Hat! Please let Vice Mum Marcia Ellingson know if you are coming and what you would like to bring.
