2 COMMODORE S CORNER We just finished our first trip to the Isthmus in two years. Everything worked great this year. I think we had more guests than our own members. Hedy entertained us with creative games Saturday afternoon. We really enjoyed building our racing sailboat from a slab of wood, some sticks and pieces of cloth for sails; then we raced them in the ocean. After that we had a huge songfest followed by BBQed Brats & shared dishes. After everyone left on Sunday, Seascape and Sea Siren stayed over to Monday before returning home. We had the best sail home with a beam reach reaching over 8 knots for periods. A BIG Thank You to the Codner's for all their hard work on this cruise. The Nominating Committee is busy working also. Their results should be ready next month to announce the officer candidates for the 2017 bridge. Karl Reithmaier and Cindy Brooks have planned a weekend cruise to Cabrillo Way Marina in October. This is a great destination and dinner plans are set for Friday and Saturday evenings. It is close enough to reach by car for members and guests without boats that operate. Joan and I are pretty busy getting everything ready for the November weekend party in the desert. Get your Blue Cards in ASAP. The Payne's are the first responders since we have received their Blue Card and check. Use Your Boat & Be Seen in 2016 Jim Wolfelt, Commodore MYCLB
3 VICE COMMODORE S CORNER That s it! Treatments are over and I m getting my voice back. Now if I could just get my taste back! Maybe by the Desert Land Cruise. If you haven t sent your Blue Cards in or you re your reservations be sure to do that as soon as you can; you don t want to miss this fun event! Speaking of fun events, Karl and Cindy have been putting together awhat promises to be a fun cruise for October. And there s more good news, too! Thanks to their dilligence and our reciprocity we will be crusing to Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club rather than Cabrillo Way Marina. If you have already sent your Blue Card in, check with Cindy at onejuddsfan@aol.com for slip assignments at CBYC, and if you haven t sent your Blue Card in don t delay, RSVP deadline is Monday, October 3 rd. I m not sure yet if we ll be able to bring Summer Wind, but if I can t make it by water I ll be there by land. Oh, and Cindy tells me there will be an hors d vores mixer on Saturday, the 8 th, so bring your favorites to share! More details to come. We re looking forward to the Desert Land Cruise, too. Believe it or not it s actually been cooler in the desert these last few days than it has been in Long Beach! This year s theme will be Dazzle Razzle which is anything from Hollywood, so dress like your favorite movie or TV star! It s been a while since we ve listed birthdays and anniversaries in the Dock Lines, but we ve got a bunch for October starting with Mary Lium s birthday this Saturday, October 1 st, followed by Eileen Paine on the 7 th. Karl and Cindy will be celebrating their anniversary on the 8 th (during the Cabrillo Cruise). Doug Dworski and Diana Hawes will both be celebrating their birthday on the 19 th, and on the 29 th Jim and Joan Wolfelt will be celebrating their anniversary. Alan Cunningham will be another year older on the 30 th and Tina will be closing out the month with her birthday on the 31 st. I ve missed all you crazy yachties these last couple of months and can t wait too see you all in October (and November, and December, and ) John A Caldwell Vice Commodore, MYCLB 2016 reciprocity includes: Pacific Corinthian YC, Oxnard, American Legion YC, Newport Beach; Cabrillo Beach YC, San Pedro; Cerritos Bahia YC, Long Beach; Chanel Islands YC, Oxnard; Del Rey YC, MdR; Hollywood YC, Costa Mesa; Hunting Harbor YC, Huntington Beach; Lido Isle YC, Newport Beach; Los Angeles YC, San Pedro; Navy YC, Long Beach; Oceanside YC, Oceanside; San Luis YC, Avila Beach; Silver Gate YC, San Diego; South Shore YC, Newport Beach; Westlake YC, Westlake; and the West Coast YC, Dana Point.

5 2016 Isthmus Cruise September The annual Isthmus Cruise was a bit unique this year as we had as many guests in attendance as regular MYCLB members. We had thirteen guests (3 boats) referred from the Long Beach Singles Yacht Club by Rodney Coomber. The official event began Friday afternoon and ran into Sunday morning. As is often the case, some boats arrived as early as Wednesday morning and departed for the mainland Monday morning. The weather was very beautiful throughout the weekend with a little threat of drizzle on the way home Monday. On Friday at about 4:00 PM, we met at the Reef Restaurant bar for drinks & appetizers. At 6:00 PM we moved into the restaurant for dinner. We started with six members. The Wolfelts, Mary Leim and her daughter Debbie, and Larry and I. Dee and Jenny were next door at a bar-b-que. After about 15 minutes Rod s guest Rick Miller and his two guests introduced themselves and joined us for dinner. We ordered dinner and then a woman from the other table stood up and came over and it was Charlotte. She and her husband Bob, and brother Richard had just come into the harbor so they came to the restaurant late and didn t want to disturb us. We were sure glad that she let us know they were there. About fifteen minutes later Rhonda (Rod s guest) came into the restaurant with her five guests. We didn t recognize her at first but she introduced herself. So we filled up the restaurant. It was wild and wooly. Saturday morning everyone was on their own, well almost. Everyone took a turn at watching the picnic tables for an hour or so to make sure we didn t lose the tables. Around 3:00 we met at the picnic area for several games with prizes to be had by the winners. The first game was the ever popular, RIGHT LEFT CENTER. Some participants left richer by a few quarters while others left with no quarters at all. Following that event, each boat & crew were provided with building materials & decorations to make a racing sail boat. First came the judging of the best, most attractive boat design. The winner here was Charlotte, Bob and Richard. This was followed by the actual sailing race from the shore to the swimming border line & floats. Hedy & Larry waited at the finish line in their dinghy and brand new dingy motor to mark the winner & collect the survivors. Jim & Joan Wolfelt won the race in grand style.
6 Rhonda s crew and Dan Underwood s crew joined us for the next game. It is called the Swivel Hips Bang the Ball Game. It was funny to watch. There were several elimination events with the eventual winner being DEBBIE, Mary s daughter. (Need I say more.) The bar-b-que was fired up in preparation for a bratwurst, multiple salads, fruit and other shared feast. While the bar-b-que did its job a few rounds of bocce ball were enjoyed. We broke out our music books & instruments for our traditional song fest. The next two tables over were from the Alamitos Yacht Club and they joined us for the song fest. We took over the place. The fire was then ready and Larry and Jim cooked the brats. After dinner we all enjoyed s mores. All in all, we had a very busy day & enjoyed everyone s company. Getting back from the shore to our boats at about 9 o clock loaded with stuff Larry s bran new motor wouldn t start, so Hedy rowed back to the boat by the light of the full moon. The dinghy light was under the boxes and Larry had the dog on his lap and couldn t move. Jim and Joan s dingy was pinned in and it took twenty minutes to free it. Tom and Harry also had to row back to their boat because their dingy motor wasn t working so we all had fun getting back to our boats. Well, Debbie and Mary rode back in a van because they were staying at the Banning House. Jim s boat was at home being repaired. Sunday was a day of rest with many heading across the channel to their home port. The Wolfelts and Codners were fortunate to have another day to enjoy the island & recover.
