Cub Scout SAFARI TRAINING! 2017 Cub Scout Day Camp Camp Guidebook Dear Scouts and Scouters, Day Camp is an outdoor experience where Cub Scouts participate in individual and team sports, games, crafts, explore nature, and work on elective adventures. Boys have fun in the outdoors -- that's Cub Scout Day Camp! The Cub Scout Day Camp program is designed to teach skills and develop attitudes that make a boy more self- reliant and more at home in the outdoors. He will have fun with a purpose. The purpose is to build character while providing a memorable experience in the life of a boy. All Cub Scouts, from new Tiger Cubs to Webelos/AOL Scouts, are encouraged to attend. Boys attend Day Camp and return home each day. There is no overnight camping. Cub Scouts participate in outdoor activities built around the 2017 camp theme JUNGLE. So you can expect boys to stretch their minds and their muscles as they enter our SAFARI training program! Day Camp is a program of the Sam Houston Area Council,, and is made available through each of the council's districts. Camps meet the standards of the National Council, BSA, and are inspected annually to assure you of a high quality, successful camping experience. Day Camp is committed to a policy that all persons shall have equal access to its facilities, safety, and programs without regard to race, creed, color, national origin, age, or handicap. For specific details - Visit our web site at: Page 1 Burroughs Park, 9738 Hufsmith Rd, Tomball, 77375

June 19-23, 2017 EXPEDITION SCHEDULE Arrival 7:45 8:10 am / Opening Ceremony 8:15 am Closing Ceremony ends 3:15 pm General Information EXPLORERS (Older Siblings Camp) Campers of adult volunteers from the age of 6-11 will have a separate camp experience from the Me Too and the Cub Scouts. Activities will be age appropriate. Parents will check in and sign out their campers with staff. SAFARI RULES On the opening day of camp, please have Scouts arrive EARLY so can complete check in and start on time. Their pack walkers will check attendance as boys arrive each morning. Day Camp staff will call parents of registered campers who are not checked-in by the first session; please inform the staff of any expected absences or late arrivals. Campers should have no reason to leave camp during the day, but if necessary they must be under the supervision of an authorized adult. Campers must check in and out with Camp Headquarters if they arrive late or leave early. Proper ID will be required and checked against registration paperwork. Parents must notify Camp Headquarters in writing if another adult is permitted to pick-up their Scout from camp that is not already listed on their registration paperwork. Scouts must be picked up at 3:15 pm each day. Pack walkers must remain at camp until each of their campers has been checked out. ANIMALS Walking groups will be comprised of one pack or multiple packs based on leadership and cub scouts attending. Each group will be assigned a CAMP name. Each TRAINING group will come up with their own cheer, yell, songs or skits. The first session of camp will be for the TRAINING groups to design their own CAMP flag. Tiger Cubs (boys going into 1 st grade) must be accompanied by an adult partner and both must be registered with the BSA. Tigers will have their own camp area but will attend all opening and closing ceremonies with the Wolf and Bear Scouts. Webelos/AOL camp will rotate separately from the Wolf and Bear Scouts. They will attend Monday opening ceremonies and Friday closing ceremonies with the whole camp. All other activities will be at Webelos/AOL camp. The Scouts will be placed in CAMP Patrols for an introduction to the Patrol Method of Boy Scouts. The buddy system is to be used for all Day Camp activities whenever boys have to be away from the rest of their Hero group. LIL EXPLOPERS (Me Too Camp) Campers of adult volunteers from the age of 3-5 are welcome to attend camp if they are potty trained and potty independent. LIL EXPLOERS Camp will be staffed by teachers and will run separate from the Cub Scout schedule. Parents will check in and sign out their campers with staff. SAFARI GUIDES Youth, age 12-17, will volunteer their time to either walk with a training group or assist the Day Camp staff with program and camp services. They will check in and out daily with Day Camp staff. EXPEDITION PLANNERS The Day Camp Staff Expedition Planners - will direct all the events of Day Camp. Each Animal group will be led by its own volunteer adult Walkers our Second Hands. EACH PACK MUST PROVIDE ONE LEADER FOR EVERY FOUR BOYS ATTENDING CAMP. The Webelos/AOL are in a separate camp rotation from the Wolf and Bear Scouts so two sets of adults will be needed. These leaders may be regular pack leaders or parent volunteers. Ideally, the adult volunteer will serve for the entire camp, but packs may change leaders each day if necessary. Boy Scout Den Chiefs and Tiger Cub Adult Partners do not count toward Pack Leadership requirements. All Walkers / Volunteers will have to complete online orientation and training prior to camp. Classroom YPT must be completed and current for all adults at camp. See YPT section below for details. Camp Sites Each Pack will have its own area for its Camp Site for the week. This is where boys will check in and out each day, store and eat their lunch, etc. If you choose to bring a pop up for another area in camp you are welcome to. The Camp and/or Burroughs Park are not responsible for damage or theft. UNIFORMS A Day Camp T-shirt will be provided to each boy as part of the camp fee. This shirt, along with weather-appropriate clothing, will be the official Day Camp uniform and must be worn to camp each day, dirty or clean. Campers need to wear closed- toed sturdy shoes, hats, and sunscreen. PERSONAL GEAR All campers age 3-11 are encouraged to bring a bucket with a lid to hold their camp items and serve as a chair. These can be found at home improvement stores. All items should be labeled with the camper s name & Pack number. The camp is not responsible for lost personal property. The lost and found box will be located at headquarters. Page 2

BADGES (IDs) Each morning pack walkers will receive a box or bag including nametags and an attendance sheet for all their campers. Walkers are responsible for handing out nametags, recording attendance and returning the box with the attendance sheet before the end of opening ceremonies to Day Camp staff. Each afternoon pack walkers will receive their box or bag at the beginning of closing ceremonies. All nametags should be returned to the box or bag along with the attendance sheet updated with check out information for each camper. The box will need to be returned to Day Camp staff prior to the walker leaving camp. The same process will take place in the Webelos/AOL camp with a separate box and attendance sheet. Me Too, Older Siblings and Youth volunteers will be checked in and out by Day Camp staff. TRAINING STATIONS Training groups will rotate through a variety of stations each day: Activities may include crafts, sports & games, Scout Skills, BB and Archery. SAFARI TRAINING FEES Day Camp is self-supported and staffed with volunteers. The fee provides for program materials, craft items, patches, T- shirts, water bottles, insurance, and many other things necessary to conduct a successful Day Camp. Please visit see the website for Day Camp Fees and payment deadlines. SAFARI JEEPS (Travel to and from camp) All vehicles used for transportation of campers must be kept in safe mechanical order and operated in a safe legal manner. Registration, inspection and insurance must be current. Safety while driving campers is very important to us. Please make sure that your complete attention is on driving. Do not use cell phones to call or text. Treat your ride to and from camp as if you were in a school zone. If you are too tired to drive safety please find an alternate transportation option. The safety of the children is our highest priority. TRADING POST The trading post will offer an assortment of items for sale. Scout Stuff, handicraft kits, sports drinks, ice pops and other items will be available. Money for a trading post account will need to be turned in with registration paperwork prior to camp. Scouts will be able to add money to their account during the week. There will be no refunds for money not used. Trading Post will be a scheduled session on Tuesday Thursday with a viewing day on Monday (sports drink and ice pops for sale only). It will be open on Friday if there is any stock left to sell. MESS CANOPIES All campers and leaders are to bring their own snacks and sack lunch every day. All food brought to camp must be non-perishable. This is a State of Texas requirement. Any food that requires refrigeration is NOT to be brought to camp. Pack walkers are allowed to bring a cooler and ice to store snacks and lunches to keep them cool but not to hold perishable items. They must contain a thermometer and temperature recorded throughout the day. Me Too campers are asked to bring two snacks per day in addition to their lunch. All campers will be provided a water bottle. Staying hydrated is extremely important during camp. Walkers are encouraged to closely monitor water intake of their campers. There will be a 30-minute rest period at the end of the lunch break. This is mandated by the State of Texas. Page 3

BSA POLICY The has firm policies regarding a number of situations that could occur in camp. These are not debatable. Any staff member, adult volunteer leader, or camper unwilling to abide by these policies will not be permitted to remain in camp. Youth Protection Training (YPT): The State of Texas and BSA requires any adult attending Day Camp for more than 30 minutes must complete the Classroom Live YPT training. The training is good for two years. Classes will be offered on multiple occasion s prior to camp. Adults are responsible for having a copy of their YPT card on them at all times during camp in the case of an inspector requesting proof of completion. A photo of the card on your cell phone qualifies. Smoking: Smoking of any type, including e-cigarettes, is not allowed on campgrounds. If you need to smoke you will have to do so in your vehicle out of sight of campers. During smoke breaks adult to camper ratio of 1:4 will have to be maintained. Alcohol, Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs: Possessions, use, or being under the influence of any of these, including beer or marijuana, will not be tolerated. Illegal, Immoral, or Unacceptable Acts: Scouting s a character building organization and we care for other peoples children in camp. Any illegal, immoral, or other activities generally considered as unacceptable by society will not be tolerated. Child Abuse / Abusive Language: It is mandatory that any staff member or volunteer report to the Camp Director any actual or suspected case of child abuse or neglect immediately. The Day Camp Director will then notify the Scout Executive. Depending on the circumstances, law enforcement authorities may also be notified. MEDICATION All prescription and non-prescription medication must be submitted to the Camp Medic for storage in First Aid. All medication must be in the original prescription bottle and have the camper s full name on it. A walker may carry Epi Pens and inhalers. All medications will be returned at the end of camp. Medication forms will need to be completed for all medication prior to the start of camp. Refrigerated storage will be available if needed. FIRST AID - INFIRMARY A First Aid Station is located in camp and is staffed by personnel trained to handle minor accidents and illnesses. Special arrangements for the treatment of more serious cases have been made with local facilities. All injuries, illnesses, accidents and medical emergencies must be reported to the Medic, even if you are able to treat it yourself. Rules and Regulations AKELA MANAGER DECISIONS We understand that, at times, things do not always go the way we would like to see them and that we are not perfect. Day Camp has an open door policy regarding complaints, but we ask that proper channels be used when available. Please address all complaints, concerns, and suggestions to your Walker, the Program Director, Camp Director or the District Executive. CIVILIANS Visitors are always welcome at Day Camp, but must check-in and checkout with Camp Headquarters - Command Post. Camp is at a public park, we cannot legally prohibit anyone from using the park facilities such as the playgrounds and trails. We do have the pavilion reserved and an agreement with the park caretakers that any non-campers are to be politely discouraged from entering our range areas. Staff will actively monitor camp activities to insure only camp registered adults are interacting with campers. Every walker, staffer, Scout and sibling must wear his or her camp shirt with a nametag. This will ensure that we know who is part of camp and who is not. If for some reason a t-shirt/nametag is misplaced during the week please come to the headquarters to obtain a replacement. Please inform a staff member immediately if you see any person interacting with camp activities or campers that does not have on a camp T-shirt with nametag or a visitor identification tag. COMMUNICATION SIGNALS Campers are asked to leave all electronics at home. Adults are welcome to bring cell phones and cameras as long as use does not distract them from their duties to campers. Training Support staff (ages 12-17) may bring cell phone for contact with home but will need permission from staff to make calls during camp hours. LOST ANIMALS If you find a wandering camper take the camper to the nearest staff member. If you lose a camper find the nearest staff and alert them of the situation. The camp will go into a Code Adam lock down with a FIVE Long Blasts signal. Once the situation is resolved an All Clear will be sent via a FOUR Long Blasts signal. EMERGENCY SIGNAL In the event that our camp experiences an emergency situation we will sound a THREE Long Blasts signal. If you hear this signal, gather your group together and immediately head for the pavilion. Staff members will be there to give you further instructions. Please bring program supplies with you if they can be safety carried, so that the campers can continue their program. CHANGE OF SESSION The beginning and end of sessions will be a TWO Blasts signal. Page 4

INCLEMENT WEATHER If during camp the weather becomes too dangerous to continue, you will be notified by staff that you can start contacting parents to have campers picked up. Please remain with your pack until all campers are picked up. If you have any question as to whether camp will be held, call the camp director or follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Thunder Policy stay inside (the pavilion) until 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder is heard. After 30 minutes of no thunder outdoor activities may resume.
