2 THUNDERIN OVER WISCONSIN September 17, 2011 WPAG will enjoy a season ending Pyro-Musical fireworks display on September 17 th at the Wildlife Campground. Ron Jansen said the plan is to start setting up equipment, e-matching shells, and labeling them with cue numbers etc. on the Friday September 16th. Ron also asked for help both days. If you would like to get some experience with display setup, come out early and see Ron or Marshall Kealey at the campground. The club s portable magazine will be on site for overnight storage. Lost Your Dishes? Please put you name on your serving trays, bowls, casseroles, platters and utensils that you bring to the pot-lucks and picnics. HELP! Just use a piece of masking tape and a marker. Dale and Mitzi try to track down the owners of the forgotten pieces, why not make it easy with a name? If you think you won t forget, just mark them anyway. You never know! If you are missing something now, have one of us check the picnic storage box in the container. There are some items there. 3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE By: Larry Huber It is hard to believe, but the final WPAG meeting/shoot of the year is fast approaching on September 17 th. This has been quite a summer starting with the big pyro auction in May. We had formal mentoring sessions for a group of new builders almost every month. In addition a wide variety of seminars were enjoyed where members shared the secrets of making falling leaves, black powder, pulverone, canister shell construction, along with tips and techniques for using consumer fireworks to improve a small backyard display. In September we will conclude the learning with a demonstration of traditional charcoal making, changing the timing of class C cakes, and finally a demonstration of energetic materials disposal. To quote Larry Karlmann Making charcoal is like watching paint dry... I plan on cooking a thirty pound drum, talk about different wood, grind some charcoal up. Question and answer. Not much else to making charcoal. The demonstration should take less than an hour. Once Larry gets the charcoal fire going, about 1:00 pm, Brian will demonstrate modifications to class C cakes. Brian s presentation will take 1-2 hours depending on how many show up and participate. After Brian is finished, people can go back to Larry s cooking area to see the finished charcoal. Eric s demonstration of energetic material disposal will most likely be done in daylight just prior to the evening show and activities. Eric s plan is to demonstrate what can go wrong when working with large quantities of energetic materials. In the middle of all the club activities this summer, WPAG members were able to make a wide range of devices that they entered into competition at the PGI convention in Fargo, ND. The result was not only being awarded the club trophy for the ninth year in a row, but having Jim Biersach named Grand Master for the second year in a row. WOW! As you read this newsletter, the NFA Expo will just have ended at Stevens Point, WI. Many club members are involved in making the NFA Expo a success. Many club members also volunteer to help with the nightly product demos and shows. WPAG is active, and the membership can be proud of all we have accomplished this past year. As we look forward to 2012, there will be new opportunities for us to lead the way in the fireworks community. The Board of Directors will be introducing strategies related to developing skills for new builders with the goal that they gain a basic understanding of the methods and techniques that will allow them to excel in this exciting hobby. We will take a more active role in becoming a voice of authority within the state as it relates to fireworks issues. We also plan to continue making refinements to our Safety Guidelines. (Continued on next page)

4 Some discussion has begun about the possibility of presenting a display at LaPort, IN that will build on the successful First Strike display we did in conjunction with the Northern Lighters at PGI in Many positive comments were made about the show presented at the Fox Cities PGI convention. Do we want to make another attempt at producing a show next year? While the 2010 show was so well received it also takes a lot of planning and work. We ll discuss the possibility at the September meeting. Our September potluck meal will feature chili, thanks to the volunteer efforts of Jim and Margie Biersach. Actually Margie volunteered Jim to make the chili. Remember everyone is invited to join in the pot luck meal. The only thing needed is for you to bring your appetite and a little something to share. For those of you who camp overnight at the Wildlife Campground, the WPAG special rate is $15 a night for use of electricity; or $10 a night for a basic campsite without the use of electricity. We will be collecting the camping fee and make payment to the campground. Stay Green! Larry Board of Directors Summary September 2011 Since moving meetings of the Board of Directors to an online form and using the GoToMeeting Internet facility, the following is a synopsis of issues discussed during WPAG Board meetings during the past month. A review of PGI Trade Table sales resulted in development of an order for City Tags to be sold at LaPorte, IN during the 2012 PGI convention. A review of Rocket line safety practices was discussed and resulted in a decision to reconvene another series of online Safety Team meeting to further refine our Rocket Line Safety Guidelines. A 2012 proposed schedule of activities and events was developed and will be discussed at the September club meeting. Deb Decker was appointed as Election Chairperson for the 2012 elections. A review of our annual membership and renewal process resulted in a proposed pro-rated membership fee schedule that would be offered only to new members who join WPAG during the summer months. The proposed pro-rating would only apply to a person who has not been a member for a minimum of 1 year. A decision will be made at the September meeting.

Thanks again for a wonderful year. Don't forget, while fireworks are on your mind to plan ahead and renew your membership early for the 2012 season at the September meeting and shoot. Hope to see everyone for "Thunderin Over Wisconsin" show this September. Regards, Jackie Arseneau, WPAG Secretary Annual One - Fuse Competition The Small class only had one entry this year. What an entry it was! Whoever thought that a fireworks display constructed of Doritos, potato chips, red licorice, and a smattering of class C would be a trophy winner? I hope the Chinese manufacturers take note of this new invention! The One Fuse contest only had 2 entries in the Large class this year. Both were great displays, Thanks for the great shows guys! 2011 One - Fuse Competition Results 2x4 Class First Place - C. F. Inc. Good work Chuck and Dan 4x4 Class First Place - John Petrash Second Place - Byron Wirth Thank you to all involved in making the contests a huge success again. Our Judges, Jim Freeman, and Steve and Jeannie Hubing; announcer, Jim Biersach; scoring, Eric Hunkins; and field helpers on the shooting line, Paul Biersach and John Jagerson.
