1 New Hampshire Pyrotechnics Association Newsletter Live Free or Die April, 2011 ISBN Volume 23, No 3 Thoughts from the Prez: Fellow Pyros, The April group buy and open shoot opened our NHPA season with a BANG! Thank you to Maryanne and Russ for the use of their property and their hard work. A lot of people worked hard to make this event all and all a success. Thank you to all that helped and participated. Our next shoot is the two day Warren shoot June 3rd and 4th. This is a great shoot site that allows us to do and shoot more things. We have the help and support of the local businesses, Volunteer Fire Department and the people of Warren. Camping and hotel information is up on the forum. The Fuller camp is up for grabs, but someone must organize and take responsibility to rent it out and see it through until Sundays Exodus. This is how we try to cover our costs, such as the price of the 1.3, porta potties, Warren Fire Department donations, etc. etc..this is also true for any event we host. Whether or not you are going to eat or not, shoot fireworks or not, once you cross the threshold or the shoot site you should expect to pay a fee. We are looking for a large turn out to the Warren shoot site. I noticed the Warren FD has flyers out and about Saturdays show should be a "Spectacle". Once again I am looking for money donations for 1.3 and 1.4 product. 2 of 200 gram items will be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you can donate some "C". We are finalizing the dates for the July two day shoot. We would like to make this an event at Dicks farm. The Class C competition should be one way to do so. We are going to pre register the contestants. Bruce will have more information on the forum. This is going to be awesome. The clean up at the Dam last fall was excellent. Please plan on being there Saturday night to pack up the racks and to get as many C carcasses in to the dumpster. Besides the first light inspection done by the safety team I would like to announce a "clean up" time for Sunday morning where we can all rally. 10:00 am..that way 1. we have a set time and 2. a reasonable hour to be there especially after a healthy "afterglow" the night before. Looking forward to seeing all of you at the Dam. Stay Green! Rob From the Ed The Warren shoot is fast approaching. I have been trying to get the Fuller Camp. Three weeks ago I sent and to the lady we rented from before and left voice messages this week. Yesterday I got a call from her. We normally don t open the camp this early. I m not sure we want such a large group. I ll get back. Clearly it s not a done deal. I ll keep trying but I would suggest that those who were looking at staying there should book a motel. 3 NHPA Warren Shoot/June Meeting Friday and Saturday June 3th and 4th With NHPA meeting at noon on the 5th Warren, NH Directions: From points South: Take I93 north to Exit 26. Follow Route 25 thru Rumney, Wentworth and Warren. Follow Rt 25 thru Warren, about 1 mi on the right is a flood control dam and pond. There will be an NHPA Shoot sign. From I91, exit at Fairlee, VT. Take Rt 25A East to Wentworth. Go left on 25 and proceed as above. From Maine, take Rt 302 to Littleton, then I93 South to Lincoln, (or take the Kancamangus Highway to Lincoln). From Lincoln, take 112/118 to West, stay on 118 (bear left) to Rt 25 in Warren. Turn right on Rt 25, and proceed as above. In order to be beyond the yellow tape at the entrance you must have signed a waiver, paid your shoot fee and be wearing your badge no exceptions. A copy of the waiver will be at the end of this newsletter. Please fill it out and bring it with you if you did not fill one out at member s night. To be at the shoot you must be an NHPA member, guest of a member or a member of another pyro club. There is to be no alcohol consumption on site; take turns; keep live material covered, and NO parking on the dam except for designated vehicles. At the December meeting the club voted for new fees, our new gate fee for guests is $ The membership fee is $ The additional $15 for guests can be applied to an application fee. Yours truly was not able to make the meeting and no one provided additional information. You ll be able to get some idea from the minutes below. NHPA Matters April Minutes The April meeting of the NHPA was called to order on April 16, 3:30 pm at Joe & Rose Barre's house, 52 Cleveland St., West Warwick RI., by President, Rob McEachern. A motion was made to accept the secretary's report as published, motion seconded and accepted. The treasures report was read and accepted. Old Business: No real old business except that we're ready to move the magazine. We need to put a crew together for the move. Discussed policy on storage for product for the club and license from BATF (storage container). New Business: A motion was made to allocate $ budget for the April 30th shoot in

4 Rumney. Motion accepted, seconded and and granted. Also, a motion was made allocate a budget of $ for the Warren NH Shoot Motion accepted, seconded and and granted. On April 30th that was changed at a brief meeting held at the Rumney NH Shoot making the allocated $ , now $ Fees for the club shoot is $25.00 for members and $40.00 for non-members. A reminder from Rob, site in NH 5" MAX shells, please adhere to this anything over the 5" will not be permitted. We talked about maintaining the "hobbyist builder" and getting the NHPA back in competition at the PGI. Looking for new ideas. $ for the Rummney Open Shoot for food, trash, & porta potty, motion seconded and accepted. Rick and Bruce are working on putting together a general safety manual for the NHPA safety test. Warren talked about maybe a back-up date for a safety seminar, he also gave a quick mention of the changes in MA, as well as, NH laws. The April meeting does conflict with the American Thunder Safety Training, therefore, anyone who attends the training and also wants to attend the April meeting at Joe & Rose's in West Warwick, RI even later in the day, are welcome. (No such thing as being late). Always food on the table and fresh coffee brewing. On behalf of the NHPA President and its members, we would like to thank Gary & Lynne for their decorations and also everyone who helped with the set up for members night. Great job!!!! Respectfully submitted, Rosemarie Barre April 30 th Shoot A spring shoot was held at the home of Russ Rigoli and Marianne Larcher on April 30th. An unofficial meeting was held at 5 PM. Treasurer s report and Secretary report were accepted. Under new biz, we voted in a new member, John M Couture, who has sent his membership application, member fee, and initiation fee to the post office box. As soon as it is received he would like access to the forum. The membership voted and approved a $1500 budget for product at the June Shoot in Warren, and voted an additional $500 to cover costs of a dumpster, and porta potty in Warren. We talked about renting the Fuller Camp house in Warren, but no vote was made therefore no club funds have been allocated to that. Early in the day, we conducted the first of our safety exams. Eight members present at the time, all took the exam and passed. I ll keep the signed exams on file, and we will repeat the process son the dam to get as many members to take it as we can. Unfortunately this was another meeting that your editor was not able to attend, however I did receive photos from two members. These photos are on the next page.

5 ANNOUNCEMENT Article from Bruce Devlin. Dear members of the NHPA, First, I d like to welcome all new members; you have joined a great group of people. As you know, our club is growing, and the following article is geared toward that growth. The NHPA has had a safety policy in place for some time. The following information includes small additions to the current way the safety guidelines are executed.

6 We now have a formal safety team in place comprised of myself, Rick Olivieri and Frank Richards. I would like to add a few more people so don t be shy As of this year, we will have a permanent shoot layout for Rumney, Warren and Dick s farm. Laminated, labeled copies will be posted in the new magazine and will be at each shoot site. If a special item is brought to a shoot, we will make the determination of logistics on site. At the Warren site, we will be moving the b-line to the field directly behind the elbow in the road where the tent usually is, thus controlling traffic to that area. No more hill climbing. There is now a no-fail test (more like a safety brochure) that will be required for anyone who will be shooting and will be administered only once per person. A list of those who took the test will be kept by NHPA. At all club shoots, those who have taken the safety test, will be given a sticker to wear. We will issue a different sticker at each get together. All this sticker does is make it easier to keep our members safe out there. We will also have a very informal tailgate safety meeting at all shoots to make sure that everyone is on the same page. The safety team will try to do a small article in the newsletter called From the Safety Corner. We welcome any and all suggestions. NHPA Membership Remember dues are due as of January 1 st. Bonnie Kosanke uploaded a short Autobiography of Dr. Shimizu at the following link: u-bio.pdf It was compiled by Craig Villeneuve and originally appeared in the New Hampshire Pyrotechnics Association Newsletter in March With Craig's permission, it was revised slightly by Dr. Shimizu and along with an added photo printed in the 3rd book in the Shimizu Literature series that the Journal of Pyrotechnics published.
