AUSTIN AREA CAR CLUB S Visit our website: Information Station M AY President s Message We are up to our eyeballs in planning for PATE. But not just PATE, but a trip to Minnesota, a visit from our daughter and baby granddaughter, the annual Sun City Fish Fry, our installation as officers in our local Eastern Star Chapter, and the annual Grand Chapter convention in August. Of course we are active in three car clubs also, so meetings and bluebonnet tours make it a busy spring for us. It got even busier when we brought our 5 th wheel camper home to pack up for the Pate Swap Meet. When the jacks would not descend properly to hold up the camper we knew we had a problem. But, we were able to get the camper in to Princess Craft s service department and a whole new set of camper jacks and controller were ordered. The parts came in and were installed today, Friday, so we will have time to pack it up for a week at PATE. I shudder to think how we d have managed if the camper had not been fixed so quickly. We have camped at PATE for many years and find it convenient to have the camper right there, rather than commute daily to a local hotel. When we are through for the evening, we just walk up the steps and relax on the couch and recliner. We can relax, because we have packed for every possible need that may come up. Fort Worth is just far enough North that the weather can really catch you off guard. To be prepared for the cold, we pack winter coats, gloves, mittens, scarves, jeans, sweat shirts, long sleeved shirts, a thick blanket poncho, and extra blankets. In case of rain we have rain coats, 2 piece rain suits, umbrellas, rubber clogs, and extra changes of clothes if we cannot get back to the camper in time. If the sun is going to make it hot and humid, we have prepared by packing a small fan for the camper, sunblock shirts, sunblock hats, sunscreen lotion, capri pants or burmuda shorts, light weight shirts, and sunglasses. During most PATE Swap Meets, we encounter all these scenarios, hot, cold, rainy, and don t forget, windy. For windy we securely lash down the club tent to 4 huge barrels filled with concrete and weighing about 600 lbs each. A few years back a tornado touched down about a mile from the Swap Meet one rainy night. Security staff rousted everyone and all of the camping folks were herded into the cinder block walled restrooms under the bleachers to wait till the storm blew by. Many small tarps and tents were ripped and tossed about, but our club tent stood the wrath of Mother Nature without a problem! I figure if I plan for the worst, it won t happen. If I don t plan, it will happen. Thankfully, we have lots of storage space for what we might need. Our new Vendor Escort signs were made and we are working on methods to temporarily install flashing blue lights on the golf carts we will be driving. Yellow lights were going to be purchased, but they really did not show up well during daylight hours, but the blue LED lights we found were much brighter, so we bought blue. Hopefully with Velcro, bungee cords, and some ingenuity, the flashing lights will work just fine. So, I am off to pack some more. Be sure to read Steve s article about the Garages Tour several of us attended. It was very enjoyable, and I think we should do some more. We will miss the next meeting, so Joe Barkley will preside at our usual location, Margarita s Mexican Restaurant in Liberty Hill. Drive safely. Pat AACC will MEET on May 04, 2014 at 1:00 Margarita s: W. St. Hwy 29, Liberty Hill. Co-Pay: $8:00 Please RSVP to, Ruth Fredericksen: r2fred@suddenlink.net, or call: May 2. NO LATER THAN

P AGE 2 AACC meeting April 6, 2014 Our April meeting was held at Pok-E-Jo s at 4109 S. Capitol of TX Hwy in south Austin. Members enjoyed a delicious buffet of chicken, sausage, brisket, beans, coleslaw, and baked potato casserole as well as cookies and, of course, chocolate brought by Pat Koehn. There were 24 members and one guest of John & Vicki Solis in attendance. We now have 94 members paid through 3/31/15. After lunch, Pat called the meeting to order, asking for the last month s meeting minutes to be approved as published in our monthly Newsletter. They were accepted as published. Treasurer s report was given and approved as published, copy placed on file. Pat recognized birthdays and anniversaries. We need someone to step up to fill the Sunshine Chair position. It was reported that Jim Coffman was seen at the store and seemed to be getting about well since his recent surgery. Pat was told by Rita Kincheloe that her husband James is suffering through an outbreak of shingles. She urges everyone who has ever had chicken pox to get a shingles vaccine as 1 in 3 people who have had chicken pox WILL get shingles. Steve Koehn will send out parking and RV passes for PATE to those who need them. If you need either of these and weren t at the meeting, please contact Steve to mail one to you. The parking pass gets you into the public parking area without charge. Steve Springer advised that some of our members had been approached by Dan Bowen (from another of the car clubs in charge of Pate) to help with the parts hauling duties. Our Club felt that if their club needs help, they should contact our Pate Directors (Steve Koehn, Steve Springer) or Pat Koehn. If you get such a phone call, please refer them to one of the above. Flashing lights for our golf carts at PATE was discussed. A motion by Bryan Craven was made to purchase five yellow flashing lights. Steve Springer seconded, and this motion carried. There was some discussion on the type of Club shirt that people would prefer. This will be brought up again before a final decision is made. May 24 th is Heroes Night Out Annual Military Appreciation BBQ and Car Show in Cedar Park from 11 3 PM. If you d like to bring a car, plan to be there before 10 AM and let Steve Koehn know ahead of time so that the correct number of spaces will be reserved for Club cars. This is a family friendly event, so bring your children or grandchildren as there will be things for them to do and make. Upcoming car shows were mentioned as well as a reminder for suggestions for our charitable donation are still being accepted. Several have been received and all will be considered before a final decision is made by the Board. Paul Dean and Steve Springer, on behalf of the members residing in the South Austin area, thanked everyone for holding the meeting in their neighborhood. The free meal drawings were won by Steve Koehn and Pat Martin. Meeting was adjourned and leftover boxes were provided for the extra food. Submitted by Ruth Fredericksen in Marc Honey s absence.

I NFORMATION STATION P AGE 5 FUTURE AACC MEETINGS 2014/15 Note: Meetings are subject to change Jun 01 Dec 07 Christmas party Jul 06 Jan 04 Aug 03 Feb 01 Sep 07 Mar 01 Oct 05 Apr 05 Nov 02 May 03 AACC Garage Tour By Steve Koehn Saturday morning, April 12, a group of AACC members went on a unique garages tour. The group included: Bob and Ruth Fredericksen, Thurman Holt, James and Rita Kincheloe, Steve and Pat Koehn, Pat Martin, Bob and Karen Ross, Denny and Margo Springer, and Gary Warmink. Our first stop was at the home of Dr. Tom and Kathy Philpott. Their property is situated high on one of the southern bluffs overlooking Lake Georgetown. Tom is a retired UT Professor and old car nut. Kathy is an accomplished stained glass artist and gardener. Both were very gracious hosts. We first took a tour of Tom s car collection which included a number of unique Model A Fords and several Baby A s, really British Austin s, which look like miniature Model A Fords. As Tom s collections grew, he had to expand his garage space to accommodate the extra cars. As he added extra garage space, he gave each building an interesting period facade. He displayed a 1928 Model A Deluxe Sedan Delivery, a 1930 Model A Blindback Taxi, a 1931 Patrol Wagon and a 1930 Model A Coupe that he owned as a youth growing up in Iowa. He also had 3 or 4 Austin s, one completely restored and the others under restoration. On the left is a file picture I had of Tom with his Model A Patrol Wagon. On the right is Tom s Model A Deluxe Sedan Delivery picture shared by Denny Springer.

I NFORMATION STATION P AGE 6 After the tour of the Tom s garages, Kathy lead the group on a tour of their very interesting home. The earth bermed home is set in the side of a hill with spectacular views of the Texas countryside and a full length view of Lake Georgetown. The house is unique in that it has very thick poured (12 inch) concrete walls which, when combined with the earth berm feature, makes it very energy efficient. The next stop was Dan Welch s home, northwest of Georgetown. Dan is a Retired US Army Tanker and an avid military history buff. He is a member of 6th Airborne Armored Reconnaissance Regiment, which participates in demonstrations and battle reenactments in Texas and neighboring states. Dan and another member of the 6th have a display of period military weapons that have been modified so that they can be fired at the demonstrations. All of the guns, mortars, etc. use the ignition of propane to simulate actual firing. The 6th AARR has also constructed a very elaborate diorama showing what a typical battle field would look like in France during WW II. It is interesting to know that much of the equipment was delivered by single-use gliders such as the ones depicted in the diorama. Dan explained that most of the motorized equipment shipped in by glider was specially designed to be light weight but still battle tough. When we arrived Dan and a friend were busy in his garage, taking the deck off his tank so they could pull the engine for rebuilding. Dan had the unfortunate experience of having his property flooded by about 4 feet of water in a very heavy rain a few years ago. After the flood he had to focus on getting his home rebuilt, so his collection suffered. Now he is having to rebuild about 5 vehicles. After we saw the tank he showed us a few of the other things in his collection. On the right is Dan s 5 ton truck that he uses to tow the tank when he goes to reenactments or to present public programs. It is a massive truck. Pat Martin our club s resident tall guy is about 6 7 so you can see how high the hood is on that huge truck. The Canadian truck was made by both Ford and Chevrolet. The Canadian government dictated, for the war effort, that every part on both trucks be exactly the same and interchangeable. Only two differences were

I NFORMATION STATION P AGE 7 allowed, the name of the assembly plant on the name plate and the manufacturer s emblem on the grill. The final stop was Andice General Store for really good big burgers and fellowship. Oh, by the way we also saw lots of great spring flowers. The field of bluebonnets was on Ronald Reagan Blvd, not to far from Highway 29 where the San Gabriel River crosses AACC OFFICERS President Pat Koehn 4305 Sam Bass Road, Round Rock, TX koehntx@gmail.com Vice-President Dan Barkley 1152 S.
