1 AUSTIN AREA CAR CLUB S Visit our website: Information Station M AR, 2012 Prez Message: Wow! February has barely started, and is over already. I don t know about you, but life seems to zip by so fast lately. I do stop to smell the roses and enjoy my husband, kids and grandkids, but Wow again, time flies! We had a good turn-out for the trip to Rosanky and our visit to Central Texas Museum of Automotive History. As luck would have it, we had the grandchildren for the weekend so we brought them on the tour. They were well behaved and enjoyed themselves. Maggie sat in the 4 kiddie cars that were on the floor and a few open (no roof) touring cars that I could lift her up to so she could sit like a big girl (she is just 2 years old) and see the cars. She loved sitting up so high. I would not let her touch anything as I do respect other people s property. Gus, age 5, was enthralled by the toy cars and trucks in the glass cases. He picked out a few that I should buy for him if we make it to the auction. Tickets to attend the auction are $100 for 2 chairs, which I guess means 2 people. It would be fun to watch and see how high the prices will go for some of the old and rare vehicles, but we have never paid that kind of money just to watch an auction. We ll see. Our old cars are still just sitting. We have the paint for the restored gas tank for the 1931 Fordor, but Steve is still tracking down some rare parts he needs to put the gas tank back in place. The next 2 tanks are ready for pick-up, and with that will be more paint matching. We don t really want to invest in 3 whole car paint jobs, so plan to only repaint the gas tanks. The restoration process is slow, but we will be driving the Model A s in a few months. I ve driven one before, but will need a short refresher course as there is more to it than just turning the key and shifting gears. The saga continues. We are planning on having an entertaining program at the March meeting. Our members are some pretty interesting people and some of them have hobbies that we think you might enjoy. Do come for a nice lunch, some tire kicking, and good fellowship. Safe driving. Pat AACC WILL MEET ON MAR 04, 2012 AT 1:00 MARGARITA S, W. STATE HWY 29, LIBERTY HILL CO-PAY IS $6.00 Please RSVP to Jim Curl: yampie1404@yahoo.com, or call: NO LATER THEN Mar 02

Old Business began with Bob Deets requesting to read into the record a statement relating to opposition to our Christmas charitable donation, which he was allowed to do. Our guests, Bob and Dina Schiaffo from Hero s Night Out, spoke at length about what our Christmas charitable donation meant to their organization and how they were able to help many more veterans and their families than expected due to our donation. They presented the club with a certificate of thanks to go into the club s history album and informed us of an event they had planned in April 2012 that would be a BBQ Cook-off with car show and other events to benefit veterans they serve. More details to follow. (next page)

This will be the 40 th anniversary for the swap meet. As I understand it, this year s swap meet directory will be a commemorative program which will highlight the history of the meet. There is also a special 40 th anniversary PATE LOGO that is being designed. The ever popular Kelly green hat issued to workers / volunteers will be replaced with a similar Kelly green hat, but with the 40 th anniversary logo on it. I am sure they will become much sought after collectors items sometime in the future. Be sure to get yours by volunteering to work a shift or two. There is also a rumor that there will be some special events and entertainment one evening (Friday?) to commemorate the 40 th year. By the time you are reading this I will have attended (or be at) the winter board meeting where I will learn more about what is being planned. I am happy that Steve Springer has volunteered to be the alternate PATE director this year and plans to attend the winter meeting. One or both of us will give a short report at our next meeting. I have a question for everyone. Are there any chef s among our group that would like to volunteer and help with meal planning and preparation for our noon lunches? I am OK with the traditional burgers and sausage wraps that can be cooked over charcoal, but am willing vary the menu and add something new if folks would like. Let me know if you would like to help or have suggestions at koehntx@gmail.com or by phone at Steve

February 11, the Saturday before Valentine s Day started out cool, but clear and dry when a group met at the Georgetown IHOP for breakfast and coffee before heading out on the Austin Area Car Clubs first road trip of the season. We were joined by some members of the Longhorn Corvette Club. After some fellowship and conversation over breakfast and coffee the group caravanned, without incident east of Georgetown on Highway 29 and then turned south on TX 95 all the way to Bastrop. We reached Bastrop about 10:30 and parked in a municipal parking lot just off Main Street and catty-corner from the nicely restored Bastrop County Court House. The County did a beautiful job of restoration on the building and the surrounding area - it was in a nice setting, tastefully landscaped, surrounded by giant Pecan trees and a manicured lawn. By the time we arrived in Bastrop the wind had picked up so what felt cool in Georgetown now felt cooler. (Next Page)

7 I NFORMATION STATION PAGE 7 Everyone was on their own so that they could explore the shops and boutiques on and around Old Town Bastrop s Main Street until 11:30 when we met for lunch at Baxter s on Main for a Dutch treat lunch. Pat and I had traveling companions for the day, Gus and Maggie, our 5 and 2 year old grandchildren. Gus and I did a quick tour of the east side of Main Street while Pat and Maggie worked their way up the west side. We met just before lunch in a shop that had a bunch of educational toys the kids wanted to look at. While waiting to cross the street to go to the restaurant, a couple came riding down Main Street on horses. Maggie was enthralled until they got close at which time she retreated to Pat s arms. The husband and wife riders, stopped to talk with Pat and Maggie. During the conversation, they encouraged Pat and Maggie to pet the horse s nose. Pat did but Maggie was not sure about doing it, so she leaned as far away as possible from the horses. Gus and I were already inside the restaurant, watching out the window. It was comical to watch. The restaurant, Baxter s on Main, was an unexpected treat. The building was nicely decorated and had a warm, comfortable feeling about it. According to Bryan Craven, at one time, the restaurant building and building next door were a large meat market that served the best old time Texas BBQ. Baxter s wait staff was friendly and accommodating, the lunch menu had a great selection of reasonably priced items plus they had set up an all you can eat soup, salad and bake potato bar for our group. After lunch, some of the group browsed a few more shops before we headed south to Rosanky for our visit to the Central Texas Museum of Automotive History. As you may have heard, the Museum which is privately owned will be closed on and its contents sold at public auction. It was a real treat to see such a wide variety of cars on one place. The oldest that I remember was a 1901 Holsman High Wheeler R/E Tonneau, which looked more like a buggy without a tongue, than a car. I believe newest car in the collection was a 1981 DeLorean Gullwing you know, the stainless steel car, which was made famous in the movie Back to the Future. There were many impressive cars on display and I am sure that by the end of the day when everyone finished their tour, they had picked a favorite car they would secretly like to have at home in their garage. Mine, if money was no object, was the 1933 Duesenberg J-35 Queen of Diamonds Sports Sedan. What a magnificent, finely crafted machine. There were 23 people that joined us at one point or another along the way Saturday for the outing. What a great start for the first tour of the year.
