1 November, 2008 Sedona Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America T ire T ra c k s THE VOICE OF THE SEDONA CAR CLUB PUTTING DEAD TREES TO GOOD USE The Steering Column W e had a great car show; lots of spectators, more cars than ever, and we made money (about $2,100)! The reason for the increase in profits was that we raised the entry fee $5.00 and had about 60 more cars than last year. Our sponsor count remained constant. These are hard times for merchants. Many past supporters turned us down this year, but our hard workers uncovered some new ones. Please visit the merchants that support us. Let them know that you appreciate their support of the car club. I thank David Lombardi for leading us through this event. A hard core of members attended numerous committee meetings to do all the planning and pre-event work. Many club members helped on the day of the show by entering their cars and helping with registration, parking, ballot counting, and staffing the SCC tent. We have already had a critique meeting, which yielded some good ideas for next year. We do not want to grow the show, just make it better so participants will want to come back. There are a lot of car shows competing for car owner s attention. We need to have a show that can hold its own quality not quantity Did you hear about the Ferraris roaring down the runway or more probably the taxiway after the show? I do not know the details, but I understand the airport security trunk went after them with lights flashing. The grapevine rumor is that one of them reached 120 mph before shutting down. There are members of our club who would love to do a speed event in conjunction with the show. Did you know that long-time member, Bob Boydston, received the Big-Shot-For-A-Day Award from the Sedona Airport? He received a commendation plaque for his support of the airport for many years. He is the fourth recipient of the award. This was done at the opening ceremony. Most of our club missed it because we were registering cars in the hinterland of the airport property. Bob s Healey quit just south of Oak Creek on the way home from the show. Our mayor helped push Bob s car out of the way. I ll bet Bob votes for him next election. Bob had the Healey towed to Karl s RPM. Turned out to be a points problem. Lucas strikes again! Coming back from the Durango tour, Al Moss took us on back roads through the Navajo Reservation. Just south of Shiprock he headed west on a road that was not even on my road map. My GPS showed it as a fine dashed line with nothing else visible on the screen. I wondered if he knew where he was going. The road was paved at least. After a while we came to a mountain range. At this point the road had new blacktop. It was a really twisty section that had sharp turn after sharp turn. Soon my navigator (in the seat not the GPS) was carsick. One driver admitted to getting carsick too. It would be a great road for a sports car drive. Al ran off and left me in his Mazuar (Cross between a Mazda and a Jaguar). He said he had a great time paddle shifting through the turns. Maybe the Club should go back there. Happy motoring. Ed Pittman Volume 26 Number 10

4 Road Rally Treasure Hunt Tests Club Members Al Moss s Road Rally Treasure Hunt once again tested the meddle of all who participated. With crafty precision Moss relied on aging brain cells to prolong an event and make fools of otherwise semi intelligent folks. The editor has it on decent authority that the first four winners cheated which would move Zucco/Giesbrecht up to first place tied with Cousins. The Road Rally Treasure Hunt Organization of America is reviewing video tapes and the judges findings to confirm the new results. In any case, if the results are overturned it would be a pyrrhic victory since all the prizes were awarded and already used. Don t pay much attention to the photos of the winners in case they are thrown out. A chilling grin betrays the pleasure Linda McEvoy had correcting all the wrong answers turned in by members.

Hale wrote many editorials championing her cause in her Boston Ladies' Magazine, and later, in Godey's Lady's Book. Finally, after a 40-year campaign of writing editorials and letters to governors and presidents, Hale's obsession became a reality when, in 1863, President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as a national day of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving was proclaimed by every president after Lincoln.
