1 Sons of Norway - Mandt Lodge News Mandt Lodge in, WI Fra Presidenten Wow- what a year we had at Mandt Lodge in 2012 and an even more exciting year will be in store for us in For those that haven't been inside our building in the last month, there have been many changes already! Thank you to everyone who has provided labor, time in getting bids and sub-contractors, those that have raised funds, helped with work days, or in any other way. A very special thanks to Howard Foss and Scott Wegner who have been chairing the remodeling and renovation process. And also thanks to David Nelson, Ed Quamme, Rich Hagen, John Arneson, and Bruce Goplen who have also put in many hours of time. And to the many others that have helped on work days, provided other support, ran errands, and provided input. We have truly been blessed and fortunate to receive the Bryant Foundation Grant to make the bathroom upgrades, install the lift which will make our building handicapped accessible, and to install a new furnace that will provide heating and air conditioning! Thank you to Jerry Gryttenholm and the Bryant Foundation Board for their support and interest in helping our lodge. As many of you have read, the Bryant Foundation is also planning a Norwegian Heritage Center for the corner of Main and Page Street- right next to our lodge! Several of our members have been on a planning committee for the center and as more information is finalized and made available, we'll share the plans with you. Along with the building projects, our lodge has had tremendously successful and well-received meeting programs. Thank you to the cultural committee for their guidance in identifying programs that our members and the community have an interest in. We have some great activities already planned for 2013! If you're not coming to meetings or activities, you are truly missing some great opportunities. If you need help getting to meetings, please let me know as we have members that are willing to help with transportation. 11 Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?! On 23, will it be you that is "coming to dinner"? This is an event in which groups of eight will gather to share dinner at the home of one of the couples who will serve as the meal hosts. This host couple will provide beverages and an appetizer or two. The main dish (such as lasagne or a casserole) will be provided, along with bread and a salad-and will be the same for each host home. Following the meal, everyone will return to the lodge for dessert and social time. Shortly before the event, the assignments will be made as to whose house you are to go to for the dinner, and you will be notified. Neither the host nor the guests will know who is coming. The planning committee will make all the assignments and will develop the menu and deliver it, ready to serve, just before the guests are to arrive. Everyone is expected to arrive promptly at the host home at 6:30 PM and following dinner, be at the lodge at 8:00 PM. This is for couples, singles, or singles with guest and is not limited to lodge members. The cost is $10.00 per couple, to be collected by the host couple but the host couple does not pay. We must know who is coming by Wednesday, 20. For reservations, call Ann & Dave Nelson at or momofarsh@charter.net Please indicate if you are willing to be a host for a group. Mandt Lodge Building Improvement Updates from Scott Wegner If you happen to go by the Lodge you may notice some changes. We have moved forward with demolition of the bathrooms. At this time, the demolition has been done, cement work completed, framing in of the new bathrooms, and the plumbers are scheduled to start installation soon! We will have a men's stall with separate urinal and in the women's bathroom, two stalls with one being a handicapped stall. A volunteer crew has removed the drop ceiling and grid in the basement dining room to allow the heating contractor access to the duct work. It is anticipated that the heating contractor will be starting their work in the next couple of days. We have filled two dumpsters with debris and have many of the downstairs lodge contents in a POD. We have a Port-a-Potty on site for use by workers, members and contractors. We now have the signed building plans for the work underway and have proceeded with the permit application process. You will also notice that the 1970s vintage fake wood paneling on the proscenium has disappeared upstairs and has been replaced with solid wood normally characteristic to Norwegian buildings. Many thanks to Howard Foss for his work on this project! On behalf of the trustees we want to take this opportunity to thank those involved with making these improvements a reality to the Mandt Lodge, that will make the Lodge accessible, functional, comfortable and culturally attractive. Stay tuned to further developments. If you have questions, concerns or ideas please contact me.

12 If you want to get updates on all lodge activities including opportunities to help with the building renovations, make sure Darlene Arneson has your address! Send it to

13 Scott's update for 14 We are looking for a volunteer or two to prime and paint both restrooms sometime between 22nd and 25th, If you are interested in tackling this portion of the project please contact me as soon as practical for details and specifics at: or swegner@ci.stoughton.wi.us We are also looking for a handy person or someone with some carpentry skills that could install a fresh air damper in an existing glass block window. We have the damper, just need to remove some of the glass blocks, frame it in and flash the opening to install the 16 x 24 metal damper. On Sunday 6th 2013 the demolition of the restrooms and the removal of concrete necessary to facilitate the new configuration was completed by members of the Lodge. I think that about ½ of all the current Lodge members showed up to assist with the demolition. Thanks to everyone that assisted with keeping this project moving forward. We were done by noon that day and many hands made fast work. The next day the plumbers installed the underground plumbing necessary for the new restrooms configuration. The permits required for this portion of the construction have been received from the City of and one of the first plumbing inspections has been completed by the inspector. On Wednesday 9th the new concrete floor was poured where needed, on Thursday 10th one of the old furnaces was removed to allow for all the new framed walls that were built by Lodge members for the restrooms. This last weekend the heating contractor also started removing old furnace ducting no longer needed. This week it is planned that the plumbers will return and continue to install the aboveground piping and vents for the new lavatories and sinks. The electrical work will likely occur this week and the walls of the restrooms will be dry-walled on Saturday 19th. Please be reminded that BINGO will be held at the Senior Center at its usual time on 19th because of the construction underway at the Lodge. Please keep in mind that It is very, very likely we will need quite a few volunteers to help clean the Lodge sometime in mid. There is dust just about everywhere as a result of the construction. It is difficult to control dust and dirt with a project of this magnitude. If it helps I m sorry about the dust. We are excited with the progress so far. If you have concerns, questions or ideas that will keep this project on track feel free to contact me anytime. Stay tuned for the next report in another week or so. On behalf of the Trustees, Thanks! Sincerely, Scott Wegner Other Building Related News We were very fortunate to have the Bryant Foundation Grant which is covering the costs of the bathroom upgrades, furnace replacement, and the lift (a type of elevator) which will make our building handicapped accessible. Due to the time involved in excavation and then manufacturing, the work on the lift will begin right after Syttende Mai. All other projects are scheduled to be completed by early. So, as you see on the calendar, we have a tentative "Clean Up Day" on Saturday, 2, beginning at 8 AM. Bring along your pails, rags and other cleaning materials- there's dust everywhere and plenty to clean! Like any remodeling project, sometimes once you get into a project, there are other items that surface or make sense to do during the remodeling that you hadn't planned on or budgeted for. These items were not written into the grant request to the Bryant Foundation. If you have an interest in donating to the building corporation fund that would allow the trustees to move forward with some other improvements that will really enhance our lodge building, please use the enclosed form for your donation. Thank you again for your support of our building!
