1 FRIENDS OF PORTER PUBLIC LIBRARY NEWSLETTER VOLUME XXX ISSUE 2 July 2018 The mission of the Friends of Porter Public Library is to foster awareness and strengthen this invaluable resource for the community through advocacy, fundraising, and volunteerism. July, 2018 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Where has the time gone? We are already halfway through 2018! The Friends board has been busy planning for future events like the Ice Cream Social which will be Monday, July 30 from 6-8 pm. Jennifer Cirincione has been hard at work organizing the event. Please consider PURCHASING, and bringing to the library on the 30 th, a baked item(s) for the cake walk (cake, cookies, cupcakes, large cookies, etc). The Board of Health will no longer allow us to give out homemade goods. They want the purchased goods as all ingredients are listed. Also in the planning stages is the second Party at Porter with our Friends. Last year was a great evening for all attendees, so be on the lookout for more information as details are firmed up. Plans now call for a date in March, I can t forget to mention our biggest event which is our 3-room book sale in February. Volunteers are already hard at work pricing and boxing items for the sale. Once construction on Center Ridge Road is completed, look for an electronic sign that will highlight events both for the library and for Friends. The Friends of Porter Library board is a small, but dedicated and hard-working group of individuals. Our goal is to foster awareness of Porter Library, and to help in purchasing items not in the library budget. You are welcome to attend any board meeting. Friends board dates will be available on the Friends page linked from the library website. Please consider joining us. We are looking for new blood. Call me anytime if you need more information: Lynn Pettyjohn
2 Director s Message Greetings Friends, I hope you summer is going as well as mine. Not sure where I am finding the time but so far I have read a biography on William McKinley, listened to the audio version of Bruce Springsteen s autobiography and have just working my way through Florida noir novelist John MacDonald s Travis McGee series. From the looks of it, library users are reading just as much if not more. The Adult and Youth Services Summer Reading Program Libraries Rock, funded by the Friends, is once again a huge success! Library staff have done a great job of decorating the library, promoting reading and engaging patrons in discussions about reading. One of the big surprises of the year has been a big increase in the number of items being circulated electronically. Primarily through Overdrive and Hoopla, library patrons are downloading audio and ebooks more and more. Whether you still prefer the heft and feel of a good old-fashioned book or the electronic version on your phone or tablet, I hope you are having as much fun summer reading as I am. I hope to see you all at the Ice Cream Social later this month and perhaps you can share with me what you have been reading! Thank you so much for your support of your public library and Summer Reading. Sincerely, Andrew Mangels, Director 2

5 OUR FABULOUS VOLUNTEERS Were you able to come to the Friends' Annual Book Sale in February? We sold thousands of books with the help of the fabulous volunteers that are listed on this page. I also want to thank the many generous friends who brought food and beverages during the two weeks spent setting up and operating the sale. This year over 64 volunteers spent over 900 hours enabling us to earn $13,000 for the library. Thank you to everyone. Their help was invaluable If I have missed anyone, or misspelled your name, I apologize. We couldn't conduct such an event without all of your support. Mark your calendars!!!!
