We have recently enjoyed both motoring-related activities and social activities. See the reports from the Club Captain and the Editor elsewhere in this publication for the details. So now as we enter Spring, which is the hotter dry season than was Winter, but not to be confused with the really hot and hopefully wet season which is Summer, there are more motoring and social events. We are doing some out-of-town work and some local work from which every member should be able to find an activity. Personally, it was great to see the Veterans take advantage of the Burdekin weekend where weather and driving conditions really allowed the elderly to stretch out and cover about 170km at comfortable speed without having to change down and brake too often. Of course the event was open to all club cars, and some non-veterans did attend. Thanks Bill and Jean Honniball, Garry Parker, Peter Toomey, Rob and Sarah di Guglielmo and Ken McWha. I was not steady enough to load the Maxwell into the trailer at that stage so we took the Mazda BT50 and was Tail End Charlie for the tour. I was almost called upon to attend to an out of fuel situation, but that resolved itself. I don t know what I would have done if somebody broke down; ferry people around, I guess! I hope everyone participates in the rest of the year and enjoys themselves Frank Cerutti, President Membership Fees Single $30.00 Family $35.00 Joining fee $10.00 Club Merchandise Club shirts and Polo shirts purchase directly from Totally Work Wear, Hugh St. Currajong. 5 Combined Clubs Swap Meet 19 July 2015 As far as first efforts go, it was a good one. When, after running a show as big and as complex as this, the only criticism you hear is that, there wasn t a coffee stall ; you know you ve done something right. Visitors poured through the gate in a steady stream for most of the day and were rewarded with a wide selection of bits and pieces for their choosing. There were dozens of stalls, at least four of which were run by TVVHMC members. Most of the stall owners that I spoke to, including Ken and Denis, were more than happy with the day s sales. I believe Norm and Les also had stalls but I haven t heard how their sales went. As well as a swap meet, the event had been promoted as a Display of vintage veteran and classic cars and motorcycles and stationary engines. Were it not for the nine VVH vehicles this category would have had very few members. After entering through the gates, visitors were able to admire our display comprising Greg s Wolseley, Derek s Beetle, Gary s Dodge, Ron s Riley, Ken s Peugeot, Warren s Daimler, Alan s Chev and my Oxford. Also present, but forming part of his stall display, was Denis s Plymouth. Occasional classic, vintage and other vehicles of interest were scattered here and there throughout the grounds. Apart from those mentioned above, other members sighted on the day helping out or looking for a bargain, or both, were George Sellen, Flo Johnson, Tiny Stonehouse, Steve Melvin and Peter Kleehammer, who had forsaken his beloved Buick in favour of a rather spiffy looking hotrod. Apologies to any other members whom I may have missed. Bargain of the meet just had to be a Jaguar 4.2 litre XK motor for a paltry $10. Apparently the visitors didn t see it that way as it was still sitting forlornly in the middle of its trailer at the end of the day. Costing only $1 less was a 46 piece socket set, which by contrast was snaffled up very early - by me! It would have been an even sweeter deal if I had actually needed it. Still, a bargain s a bargain! Thanks to all the helpers and to those who swelled the numbers as well. Let s try and get a coffee stall going next year! Bill Honniball 5
Afternoon Tea at the Warrens 9 august 2015 The journey: Depart from Anderson Park shortly after 2 pm and, depending on the age of your vehicle, follow one of two different sets of directions resulting in your safe arrival at the destination in time for tea (afternoon variety). The faster cars covered the 40 kilometres in about 40 minutes while the slower ones completed their 20 kilometres in a little less time. The players: Ron and Heather, Alan and Pam, Ken and Jo, Robert and Joan, Bill and Jean, Mal and Jenny, Gabe and Helen, Gary, Derek W. Their toys: 1931 Chevrolet, 1934 Dodge, 1949 Riley, 1961 Vanguard, 1973 Mercedes, 1981 Peugeot, 1984 Mazda, a couple of moderns. Their hosts: Kevin, Robyn, Frances, Claire. The fare: A superb spread of delectable savoury and sweet dishes prepared by the hosts over the previous week or so in the finest tradition of Celia Nott. The Warrens have been providing this wonderful afternoon tea for a number of years in memory of Celia and Alan Nott who hosted a similar event for many years previous. Nothing disappointed, including many of the dishes which were made to Celia s own recipes, including a to die for chocolate slice. The food and drinks were consumed at Kevin and Robyn s acreage at Rangewood, where the gentle slopes, open spaces and shady trees provided a pleasant backdrop for members to discuss matters dear to their hearts. Vice President Derek thanked the Warrens for hosting such a wonderful afternoon and for the many, many hours of labour that they had put into its preparation. There were no dissenters! 7 Burdekin Weekend august
Burdekin Weekend Report Four families made the effort to travel to the Burdekin with club cars for the weekend. Burdekin residents included Chris and Les Wassmuth, our hosts for the weekend, Jan and Tom Callow, Fay and David Martin, Jan and Peter Toomey, Rob and daughter Sarah di Guglielmo. From Townsville we saw Jan and Norm Morley, Gary Parker, Jean and Bill Honniball and Ken McWha. Personally, it was great to see the Veterans take advantage of the Burdekin weekend where weather and driving conditions really allowed the elderly to stretch out and cover about 170km at comfortable speed without having to change down and brake too often. Saturday s drive covered 109km before lunch at ANZAC Park back in Ayr. Smoko was taken at the Burdekin Gun Club facility, our first time here. After lunch we were on the road again, this time a nearly 60km drive via Rita Island to Alva Beach for afternoon tea. Saturday night was the traditional barbecue at Chris and Les home. We were joined by other members who could not make the drive during the day including Jan and Gary Crowdey, Margaret and Brian Paine, Lisa di Guglielmo, Sylvia and Ross Chapman, Fiona and Ross Northwood and Evan West. Les and younger brother Neville did the cooking which was particularly enjoyable. Also the Burdekin families provided pre-dinner snacks and desserts which were to die for. A good night s sleep followed and we mustered at Plantation Creek park for a drive to the aquifer at Labatt Road for morning tea. Again the drivers enjoyed the twin advantages of pleasant driving conditions plus the rest of the to-die-for desserts. There was discussion about plans among the Veteran owners about the upcoming National Veteran Tour at Goulburn and the Victorian 60th Anniversary Veteran Tour at Colac, both in November, which four families are attending. It was a very enjoyable weekend, which should be on the calendar again next year. Frank Cerutti 8
Attended by: Kristine (Ethal) Morris Minor Derek - (Dudley) Mini Cooper S Ron - Riley Peter and Tina ( Mr Morri) Morris Minor Ute Garry and Jan - Masonic Home Kirwan Fete Saturday 22nd August 2015 Packard A very enjoyable morning. Lots of craft, book and plant stalls to look at and buy a bargin from. We all went home with large bags of fruit and veg. Sitting in the sun we enjoyed listening to music, drinking coffee and eating scones jam and cream. At noon we started our engines and headed for home after a morning of fun. Kristine Walker Fill Ins Paddy frequently attends his church Bingo club, and every week, a gag door prize is given out. One week, Paddy is presented with a toilet brush. What the hell is this? he asks the pastor. Why, it s a toilet brush. Oh, I see, says Paddy. A couple weeks later, the pastor jokingly asks Paddy how the brush is working. He replies, Well, it s okay, but I think I ll go back to using paper. A Woman s Place Is in the kitchen Sitting with her feet up, sipping a cocktail and watching her husband cook dinner 9
Club Captain's Report Sept 2015 Due to my impending absence from Townsville, this report is being prepared ahead of time on 8 September. 1. Previous Events The Club managed to squeeze four events in between our August and September meetings; the Burdekin weekend, the Masonic Home fete, the Ladies morning tea and the Hervey Range Tea Rooms breakfast. Time permitting, reports on these events will appear in the September Running Board. The Burdekin Weekend (the only event I attended) was immensely enjoyable thanks to the efforts of our hosts, Les and Christine Wassmuth. 2. Coming Events First up will be our restoration tour on Sunday 11 October. The plan is to depart Anderson Park at 8:30 arriving at Tiny s Jensen property, 47 Slayton Road, around 9 o clock. After browsing Townsville s best collection of restorer s delights we will set out for Bill Bunt s largely restored collection at the corner of Stuart Drive and Orpheus Street, Stuart. By arriving around 11 or a little earlier we should have plenty of time to admire and discuss this wonderful collection before adjourning to the Stuart Hotel for lunch at about 12:30. Note that this outing requires a considerable amount of highway driving. Anyone concerned about this is advised to omit the Jensen leg and simply meet us at Bill s shed at around 11 o clock. The weekend of 17/18 October is our Ravenswood overnighter. We will depart from Stuart Drive, adjacent to the Stuart Hotel, at 10 am for the 120 km drive arriving around midday. We have 10 rooms booked at the Railway Hotel for the following members: Gary, Frank and Adrienne, Gabe and Cheryl, George and Sandra, Derek and Helen, Warren and Miriam, Tiny and Yvonne, Ron and Heather, Ken and Jo, Bill and Jean. Anyone else wanting to go should advise me as soon as possible. Sixty dollars a head covers dinner, bed and continental breakfast. After lunch we can spend the afternoon exploring or resting before our fancy dress dinner theme: GOLD. After our breakfast the cars will assemble for a grand tour of downtown Ravenswood. Lunch at Balgal Beach with the Jag and Mini Clubs is still scheduled for 25 October. Members will be notified when departure details are provided by the Jag Club. Following an underwhelming response to the proposed Progressive Dinner this has been tentatively changed to a Progressive Breakfast. There will be three courses at three parks, cereal and juice at Anderson, sausage sizzle at Walter Nesbitt (Pallarenda) and coffee, tea and croissants at Rossiter. The cost is yet to be worked out and will be advised when this has been done. As this will be a catered event, members should advise me of their intentions a week beforehand. The breakfast will be on 8 November, starting at 7: Thanks To all the members who have participated in our recent events and particularly to those who helped with the organising and reporting of them.
