4 President s Report Hello to all members and readers of the Running Board. Welcome to our year of We have some fresh faces in our Executive and Management Team, and we are all keen for the Club to enjoy another good year. Our focus for the first month is preparation for and hosting of the 2017 Hub Rally, which is being held in Townsville over the Easter long weekend, from Friday 14th April to Sunday 16th April. By the time you receive this Running Board, the starting day is just 4 weeks away. Much preparation has gone into this year s Hub Rally and expectations are high that there will be good participation from not only our club but also from the Cairns and Mackay regions. We have a fresh venue and new routes to explore and plenty of entertainment to satisfy everyone. To date numbers have been lower than we are comfortable with, but we expect and will be able to handle a late rush of nominations. 10 Rev Head or Enthusiast? Helen Porter Mitchell was born in Richmond, Victoria on 19th May, Her professional debut was made at the Melbourne Town Hall on 17th May, 1884 after being told by her singing tutor that her voice would enthral the world. Now you ask who is Helen Porter Mitchell? Answer: Nellie Melba later to become Dame Nellie Melba. It was about the time that of making her professional debut that she adopted her new name because Nellie was a common nickname for Helen, and she also changed her surname to Melba in recognition of her home city of Melbourne. In 1887 at the age of 26 she made her international debut at the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels. After performing at the local opera in Nice, Nellie would attend the Battle of the Flowers Festival, where in 1892 she won first prize for the bestdecorated car of the festival. This was apparently her first involvement with the motor car. Because of her international success Nellie had a rather large entourage to transport her considerable wardrobe. Her trips around Europe and America all involved trains, ships, horses and carriages, which brought her to see the advantages of having a vehicle of her own. Eventually she had a motor on three continents. In 1903 Melba bought an electric Brougham at the Paris Automobile Show. First reports of Melba behind the wheel are in 1904 in Paris where her chauffeur reportedly knocked down and killed an elderly man. However, Policier des Voiture implicated Melba as the driver as the chauffeur had over-used champagne. Because of her influence that officer was not available when the case came before the courts, as he was in a very remote area of France. When she performed with tenor Enrico Caruso in Rigoletto, in Paris, she was greatly impressed by his two-cylinder Type AX Renault. This led to her paying a visit to Louis Renault at his Paris villa, where he promised to deliver a new four-cylinder 20HP Type AM saw Nellie sail to Perth with her chauffer, entourage and Renault where they took the train to Melbourne. She then drove the Renault from the train to her new home Coombe Cottage in Lilydale which still stands today. Accompanied by her lady s maid, chauffer and the flautist John Lemmone, Nellie drove from Sydney to the Jenolan Caves to attend a party. Once again the chauffer over-used the beverages and was so intoxicated he was unable to crank-start the Renault. Somehow Nellie managed to start the car and drove to the family property, Liddleton Station, near 10

11 Rev Head or Enthusiast? cont Lithgow. Her brother Charlie was to use the car while she was in Europe but for some unknown reason the family hid the car from him. It wasn t until 1959 when a Sydney collector discovered the derelict Renault which was subsequently displayed at the Sydney Opera House in It now resides with an enthusiast in Perth. Having spent considerable time in the US, Melba had taken a liking to Pierce-Arrow cars and subsequently bought two six-cylinder models: an open-drive limousine and a large tourer. Melba used the Pierce-Arrow limousine in the US, Europe and Britain before it was requisitioned by the French government for the war effort. In 1918 it was returned to her in very poor condition so she shipped it home to Melbourne and gave it to the Metropolitan Fire Brigade who cut it down to use as a pumper. Now fully restored and on display in the Fire Services Museum in Melbourne. Melba owned houses in New York, London, Paris and Melbourne and was one of the first female customers of Rolls Royce. Her choice was a 40/50HP Silver Ghost limousine which she took delivery of in She loved this vehicle and had it regularly shipped between Australia and Britain along with her chauffeur. Its whereabouts are unknown today, but it was used for her British tour in 1919 and was still being serviced in London in She was awarded Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in March 1918 for services in organising patriotic work. After a stunning international singing career, Melba died in 1931, aged 71. But she also left her mark as one of the first women to sing the praises of the horseless carriage. The Fire Services Museum in Gisborne Street, East Melbourne (just a short walk from the free Circle Tram), is well worth a visit if in Melbourne. They have a total of about 65 fire engines and other fire vehicles of varying ages, most of which are in storage but do get rotated through the display throughout the year. Most of the display is of fire-fighting equipment used through the ages Hotchkiss Fire Engine. Warren O Donnell PS Next trip to Melbourne I would like to visit the Lindsay Fox collection. 11
