1 Tri-County Trail Association Non-Profit Trailways Bringing Horsemen & Youth Together 2662 Downing St. SW, East Sparta, Ohio Volume 55, Issue 3 March 2016 After a long illness, one of our founders, Gust Malivite Sr. Has passed away in February Tri-Co was established and ran out of the Cricket Valley Farms for its first 21 years till Tri-Co was able to afford property of its own. Tri-Co is what t is today because of all the generosity of Gust and his family. When we purchased the campground as we know it today, Gust did the majority of the excavating as a donation to the club. Even after we had the campground, Gust still let us put on horse fun shows at the farm for fundraiser's along with our endurance races. Tri-Co held the 1st endurance race east of the Mississippi in Gust won the heavy weight division out of 29 participants! He went on to hold the pro rodeo s at his farm, which tri-co helped him with parking. Gust became a pro roper in the rodeo circuit. He always held Tri-Co close to his heart and helped whenever he could. He was very family orientated and a true Cowboy. He will be forever missed, RIP Gust Malivite SR. Tri-Co can not thank him enough for all he did to start this club and help make it what it is today. Our hats are off and our knee is down, thank you Gust! God Bless. Chili Cook Off Was a Blast! Patty Farmer & her crew of Ellen Vanpelt, Jim & Bev Mike, Elaine Kirk & Askley Wadsworth did a great job of organizing the Chili Cook Off! 60+ People came out to enjoy all the taste testing and had a great time! A nice handful of people even enjoyed a brisk ride in the morning. We nice to see everyone and even some new faces! Hope everyone had a great time! 10 Chili s were entered in the contest, they were all awesome!! It was super hard to vote! When the final count was in - Ashley Wadsworth came in 1st! Shelly Ott & Anjinelle Hennebert tied for 2nd! Ron Bittner won 3rd! 5 Trail Ellen Vanpelt, Jim & Bev Mike & Ed Willard put in a new culvert and covered it with gravel on the upper Orange trail. They are also working on moving the Orange trail, watch Facebook for a posting when they are able to go work on it so they can have help. Some other areas we will need to address this spring is the orange trail water crossing at Hanks- adding gravel, Swamp trail- more gravel, and new rope put up, Blue trailneeds culverts reset and graveled. As a reminder, some of the 4wheelers on the trails are land owners, please be respectful to all of them. Also on the blue trail, they will be patrolling it more with the sheriff, so hopefully this will help. Jim Mike & Ray Dippalito will be putting together a list of what is needed to repair the roof over the outside sink, they will also be working on it to repair this, if you are able to help do the job please let Jim know. The more help the better! This spring we plan to connect the rest of the water lines, repair the ones that need it and also reroute the rain water from the dump station. Loads of branches will need picked up, wood cut/split and gravel under the tie lines. Arena Update We are looking into the best way to address the ditch that we have along the hill side. Once we are sure what will work we will have it finished. Please keep off this area till it is dry, you will sink in the fresh dirt! Civic Center Bernie turned in another $ for Jan work. Mass. Saddle club will get $ for working jan & feb. Thank you all who have stepped up to help, March is looking well covered, but still let them know if you can help incase they need someone. Thank you! Mohican Ride Flyers will be posted on the website very soon. This weekend is going to be a blast that you will not want to miss out on. Only 25 rigs will fit for the overnight camping. You must be a member to come for insurance reasons. So make sure your reservations are in early. Printer Problems Solved Last month the printers decided they were done for sure this time. The new ink has been returned. It was voted for a $1000 cap and get a new printer (not refurbished) with a warranty. After loads of shopping & seeing what was the best deal, Cynthia & Greg Bauman were able to get a big discount at Office max since they shop there a lot. Only $415 for a great work printer, with 3 year warranty & a box of paper! Now they will get the ink off ebay, much cheaper there, and they will still be way under budget! Mower Ray has offered to do the tune up for the mower, big thank you! Raffle Tickets Kliff & Amy Crawford will be at the Tusc County Fairgrounds for the 4-H tack sawp April 3 from 10-3 (Sunday) selling the raffle tickets. If anyone can come help them out that would be great. Time to Ride Challenge Sign up is April first, voted to sign up. Cynthia Bauman will run this again this year. If we would be so lucky to win anything this year, we will be putting the funds towards finishing the arena, if we haven t raised enough by then. If there is funds left the rest will go towards putting in a shower house or at least an area you can hang a camp shower in. We will not plan for anything till we see if we win. We hope to see everyone at the events this year again & sign in :) Hold the TP! Anjinelle Hennebert has made some very nice TP holders for the Outhouses so that many rolls can be out there at one time. We will put locks on the ends to help them stay where they need to be once they are installed. Thank you Anji! Reservations Make sure you get your reservations into Joann Smith for the Banquet by May 25th. You can pay online as well. Grants to 4-H kids in Ohio Be sure to spread the word on the $250 grants for 4-H kids in Ohio that we will be handing out with the profits from the OQHA ride, see letter for details. The 5 committee that will be deciding the grant winners will be Cynthia Bauman, Sarah McWilliams & Amy Mackey. Hopefully we will raise enough money all the kids will get a grant that are involved!! Winners will be announced at the Ox Roast in August. Voted $100 to Cindy Krumms 4-H raffle, $50 to Sally Roush for the Equine Affaire, $100 to Ellen Vanpelt to get the peanuts for Equine affair. Trash pick up to start in April. Look into better price on propane since our lease is up & pop machine items. Equine Affaire This is a long 5 days of working a booth, setting up and taking down. If you are able to help in any way please let Ellen know, feel free to stop in and help, but it is really nice to know ahead of time if your able to help. Who is running the events this year?? We still need people to run the Spring Ride, Steak/Chicken dinner, Fall Ride & the Halloween Weekend. If you are able to help please call Jim Mike. The past few years Bev Cherso, Debbie & Jessie Carroll have taken on these with getting a crews together. They were nice enough to work their tails off so others could have a brake & new comers could learn the ropes, now they need a brake & we hope others can fill their very large shoes. Thank you in advance for stepping up. And a huge thanks to the crew that has been ding it for so long, that's a major job to do one every month all summer long! Can t thank them enough for all their hard work! Charm Boot & Harness donated a very nice belt buckle for the awards banquet that will be given away for the best dressed cowboy! Helen Sinclair also

6 Tri-County Trail Association & OQHA To all 4-H participants that have a horse project in Ohio, We have been looking for ways to help encourage youth horsemanship in Ohio. This year we are starting something new with the proceeds from our OQHA/Tri-County Trail All Breed Trail Ride and Challenge and we can t wait to share it with you! We will be awarding grants in the amounts of $250 to any current 4-H participant in Ohio that meets the guidelines. Half of the profits that are raised from the event held June 10-12, 2016 will award as many $250 grants that we are able to. In order to apply for the grant, you must follow these simple guidelines. 1) Must be a current 4-H participant and have a horse that will be taken to fair in ) Write an essay about you and your horse and why this grant would help you in your horse activities along with what your plans would be for the money. 3) Include the 4-H club name, County you are participating in, at least 2 of your club advisors along with their contact number for a reference and verification. 4) Include a picture of you and your horse. 5) Your name, address & phone number. 6) All information must be mailed to Cynthia Bauman at 1300 Downing St SW, East Sparta, Ohio No ing please. There will only be a limited number of grants and that amount can not be determined till the event is held. It will be very hard to choose which participants will win the grants. We will have a committee that will read each essay & confirm your 4-H involvement. It will also be taken into consideration who sent in their essay in first and how well it is put together. To help in the decision making, each participant is highly encouraged to come to the event held on June 10-12, If you are able to attend, with/without a horse, please make sure you introduce yourself to the head of the committee, Cynthia Bauman. We would love to introduce all the participants at the Saturday evening event after dinner. (Reservations are needed for camping.) Our main goal is to be able to help youth get more involved with their horses & family. Wether you are in need of money to go to the state fair, buy show clothes, buy new/safe tack, pay 4-H fees, vet checks, farrier visits, stable rent, grain or hay; we hope that this can help each of our youth horsemen accomplish what they need to so they can continue riding their dreams! This in itself is what we gain! OQHA & Tri-Co would love to have your help spreading the news about our grant so everyone has the opportunity to win. With that, the higher the attendance/participation is at the weekend, the more grants that we will be able to give out. Be sure to tell your friends and family to come and help support your grant winning! Deadline for all applicants is postmarked by May 25, Awards will be announced at our annual Ox Roast August 20, 2016 in the evening right after dinner and Poker Run Results. Thank you and we look forward to seeing your participation! If you have any questions feel free to call me at , tricotrails@gmail.com or see our website at Tri-Cotrails.org (info on the weekend will be on the website). Sincerely, Cynthia Bauman OQHA/Tri-Co All breed Trail Ride & Trail Challenge Coordinator 6
