We are happy to announce that Larry Schneider has volunteered to fill the position. Also, we are very happy to announce that Rick and Lynda Howell have agreed to be the Chapter W Couple of the Year. Our weather has turned nice and riding is Great. Most of us are used to riding in the New Mexico winds, but we have to be alert. The sand on the road, the trash blowing across the road, and the gusts hitting you can push you around. Last week I had a tumbleweed the size of a small car blow very close across in front of me. Stay alert! Ride often and ride safe! Jerry & Becky Chapter Directors The month of February was quite a month for the Chapter. How many other Chapter meetings can brag that they hosted a wedding? For those of you who missed the meeting, Doug Pettigrew and Chris Brockett got married during our February meeting. We want to thank Doug and Chris for allowing Chapter W to be part of their wedding and we wish them heartfelt congratulations and all the happiness in the world. The sweetheart dinner was a big success with over 40 people attending. Donna Brown, the Chapter Special Event Coordinator, did an outstanding job ensuring that each of the sweethearts got 2 roses and everyone received a gourmet cupcake. The Chapter s other successful event was the Lunch/Dessert ride, where over 30 riders/co-riders rode out to Edgewood for lunch and dessert. A special thanks to Kathrine López for arranging the lunch at the Pizza Barn and to Len and Kathrine López for leading the ride after lunch. The Chama River Brewing Company was the site of the 2008 Chapter W Sweetheart dinner on Sunday, February 10, 2008, 4:00pm. From everyone s comments, it seemed that the cupcakes were a hit. Each lady in attendance received 2 long-stemmed pink roses, compliments of the Chapter. There were extra cupcakes so we drew numbers and gave them away along with the 8 centerpieces. Thanks to Ted and Kathy Bates for helping with making and handing out the numbers! From Mike Suttle The schedule for Rider Education is still being formulated, but we do have a training set up for March. The date will be March 30 th, the last Sunday of the month. The location will be the Accessory Pit and the time 1 pm. The topic will be Touring and Braking, a GWRRA approved video course. It goes about 50 minutes, plus we will need some time for some stories and maybe a short ride after so see you then! 4 February 24 th Chapter F&W Social This month it was our turn to sponsor the monthly Chapter F/W social. It was decided to schedule a trip to the Pizza Barn in Edgewood with a dessert run to the Dairy Queen, also in Edgewood. As luck would have it, we had a pretty decent day and a very decent turnout with 23 bikes and 36 folks participating. After pizza, Leonard & Kathy López led us on a short ride around the Edgewood area with a stop at the local Dairy Queen. Folks, it just doesn t get any better than this; a very good ride, good weather, excellent pizza, a DQ chaser, and great companionship! Events at a Glance! RIDE FOR KIDS EVENTS By Kathy Bates The 2008 Albuquerque Ride for Kids will take place on Sunday April 20, We are so excited about our Ride this year. We hope that everyone will come to the Ride and bring a friend (or several friends!) with them. Last year we raised over $66,000 for the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and our goal this year is $80,000. To make that goal we must tell more motorcyclists about our Ride and have some exciting fundraisers. Here are some fundraisers coming up in early 2008: Trailer Raffle Tickets, 6 6 wide by 9 long flatbed trailer custom made by Ted C De Baca. Perfect size for motorcycles! Tickets are $5.00 each and can be purchased at the Accessory Pit or at the Albuquerque Bike Super Show at the Fairgrounds on March 14 16, The winning ticket will be drawn at the Ride for Kids Booth on the final day of the Bike Super Show, March 16 th. To enter your bike in the show, download an entry form from FOOD, FUN & FIREARMS! A Pistol Shooting Competition presented by the New Mexico Patriots and the Belen Shooting Sports Association, March 29, 2008, 1:00 5:00 PM. At the BSSA Range. 6 Electric Four Wheeler Raffle. This Razor dirt quad has a rechargeable battery and a run time of 40 minutes. (Not for use on public streets or sidewalks.) Raffle Tickets are $1.00. All proceeds will go to the PEDIATRIC BRAIN TUMOR FOUNDATION. Drawing to be held on December 1, 2008, at 6:30 PM at the Accessory Pit. Tickets will be sold at the Bike Super Show March 14 16, 2008 and at the Accessory Pit. Pizza Party, Saturday April 19, 2008 at the MCM Elegante Hotel. The night before the Albuquerque Ride for Kids is the Pizza Party. Cost is $10 for pizza, cheesecake and a drink. We will have some great silent and live auction items and lots of fun. Come and enjoy yourself. Albuquerque Ride for Kids, Sunday April 20, 2008 at Journal Pavilion. Registration is 8:00 AM to 9:45 AM and the Ride takes off at 10:00 AM sharp. There is free coffee and doughnuts and after the ride there is a light lunch and an inspiring Celebration of Life Program. Don t miss it! Chapter W will meet at the Accessory Pit at 7:15 am and leave at 7:30 am for the Journal Pavilion. RECIPE BOOK More recipes are required from members their families/friends/enemies/neighbors to enable me to complete my present Recipe Book, of which the proceeds of sales will then be donated to the Ride For Kids. I would also appreciate a photograph of each person donating a recipe; this would then be placed alongside that recipe. Would be nice to have the motorcycle within that same picture. Many Thanks! 8 2008 REGION F & CO DISTRICT RALLY NEWS The Holy Cross Abbey is the center of the 2008 GWRRA Region F and Colorado District Rally. The Abbey is located on the east side of Canon City as you come into town on US 50 from Pueblo. You can t miss it: It s a beautiful structure that just draws your eyes. But it seems a bit out of place architecturally with the Victorian and Territorial structures that predominate in town. That s because this Gothic style structure was built in For many years it served as a boys school and was home to approximately 20 monks. The Holy Cross Abbey is on the registry of National historic sites in the United States. You re in for a real treat at this year s Rally with the spectacular rides through the mountains and great attractions nearby. Neil Zack, Region F Director (Information: or sburgener@aol.com.) REGION F RALLY RIDER EDUCATION This year s rally for Region F in Canon City, Colorado promises to be both exciting and busy. A full schedule of events has been mapped out to perk the interest of all attendees; and while not everything is cast in concrete, Rider Education is looking to offer a full complement of courses/seminars for members to update or renew their levels. At this time we want to present rider courses, seminars, and medical training. Given the availability of instructors, the following courses are being scheduled during the rally by Rider Education. ARC/ERC Medic First Aid Co-Rider Group Riding Mature Rider Looking at the schedule layouts, it appears most of these courses/seminars will be presented Thursday and Friday of the rally on August 14 & 15. Given the level of interest and sign-ups, we may have to schedule Saturday as well, but this is still in the planning stages. As planning goes along, and to make room for other seminars, we may add or delete a class given the interest levels by attendees. We will make all this final in enough time to get the word out so members can plan accordingly.
